A great man is passed this Sunday, at 71 old...I can't forget him and the marvellous and tragic film about him the others guys of this périod. My english is not so good to give him an homage, and his career is so long and various that i propose you this thread beetwen the 2 motorcycle periods other threads. I have few images in various revues...it's my modest remember.
RIP Jack...

The film that Antony referred to was called "Continental Circus" - it was very good and well worth trying to find.

I believe No15 is John Blanchard and not Dan Shorey who rode with a plain white helmet.

Jack rode on a very impressive sort of marques in all the categories :(not in order) Maico, DKW, Yamaha, Suzuki, Matchless, Norton, AJS, Linto, Aermacchi, Jada, Seeley, Bultaco, Bridgestone, Mondial, Cardani and maybe some others
Here the Jada périod

A very rare photo of Jack with a full-face helmet on.....he favored the cromwell, then "jet" style almost until the end....

I don't have my files at hand, but from memory I believe this 1978 Imola 200 was Jack's last race, wasn't it ? I seem to remember he had a very bad fall there in which he suffered severe injuries and decided to finally call it a day ........

edit : or maybe this accident was at Le Castellet , the same year .....

Philippe, it was indeed in Imola. In fact, Jacks heart actually stopped beating and Í believe a doctor amongst the spectators managed to revived him.
RIP Jack. Gone but never forgotten

Yes just seen the sad news on Teletext. Met Jack a couple of times during my Continental Circus sojourns and he was very personable talked to me about his McIntyre Matchless once I remember. Our heroes sadly pass on.

I also echo the sentiments you have here, Antony. He epitomised the Continental Circus and was a great rider and will be sorely missed. He was involved in racing almost to the end which is always nice to see.

Philippe, is there such a thing as a DVD version of Continental circus? I haven´t seen it and would love to buy a copy. If there is, do you know where I could get one?

I had a look at the issue of "Moto-Revue Classic" from a few years back, from which the 1978 Imola picture posted by Antony was scanned . It features a long interview of Jack in which he explains the circumstances of his quitting of racing . He fell heavily at this Imola 200 race, was indeed rescuscitated at trackside by a young Dr Costa ( so Jack says ) after about three minutes of "clinical death" , stayed in a coma for five days afterwards and evidently suffered some brain damage that he never fully recovered from. He said he went to the Paul Ricard 200 a few weeks later, but was totally without balance, couldn't lean the bike properly, and the seriousness of his situation was so evident that after the first practice sessions, François Chevallier, the Paul-Ricard boss, offered to pay him his starting money on the condition that he would stop riding and go back home ! Jack says that he then insisted on going to the TT , but that he was sleeping 22 hours a day and had to be woken up in time for the practice sessions and that after a few hazy laps he decided to finally call it a day . He was plagued with headaches and balance problems ever since ( which explains why he always refused all offers to come and ride at classic meetings ) but still served 10 good years as chief technical inspector for IRTA before retiring, sharing his time between the Paris suburb and the Côte d'Azur.

I have been trying to discover the cause of Jack´s death. Does anyone know? As far as I was aware he wasn´t suffering from any illness.

I think ex Rhodie that Continental Circus shows that Jack had received a lot of injuries while racing and as we get older ....

Anthony, what do you know about the Cardani? I thought I knew a bit about this sport but I must confess I have never heard of this machine until now. Any info you, or anyone else, might have would be much appreciated.

The Cardani was a three cylider 500 which tried to copy the MV as much as possible. Rather like the "Jada", the "Cardani" was an amalgam of the names of the designers. The 'dani 'was Daniele Fontana who did the chassis whilst the 'Car' was Carlo Savare who designed the motor. I don't remember it running reliably but perhaps others could fill in with more information.
