I remember when I was doing the rounds for UCAS open days back in 2001 I met a guy at Manchester who'd worked with Williams, and had an FW19 nosecone in his office. I forget his name, but he was a composites guy in the materials science department.
I also tried searching for journal papers to get some ideas, but understandably they don't publish many. When they do the author is almost always listed as working for the team itself rather than a university.
My personal tendency would be to look more for a subject where the skills you learn could be easily transferred to motorsport rather than searching for a direct link, because I'm not sure you'll find one. The sort of projects that have the scope and length to require 3 years' work are going to be long-term R&D, which will probably be kept in-house if possible so it stays secret.

The best place that I have seen that do MS courses in motorsports, which have links to pretty much every F1 team is Cranfield. Pat Symmonds is among the alumni.

Also when I was at Leeds (for a computers degree), they were a great bunch people down the pub (always essential), very much work hard, play hard. Not sure who's there anymore these days though.

If you are serious about the PhD, first get the PhD and only then begin to worry about the other (f1) stuff. Grad school for a doctorate is hard enough of a grind as it is without any other complications. It is great to have dreams, but reality is a different story. Get the knowledge and the expertise and then things will fall into place.
Also, contrary to popular belief here and elsewhere, formula one is scarcely on the leading edge of much of any technologies, simply the rather frivolous use of some of them.

I've heard tell that the materials people in Leeds sometimes tend to be just 'play hard, play hard' and working takes a back seat, although of course that could be just Leeds/Sheffield rivalry talking.Originally posted by mmmcurry

While we're on the subject of PhDs and such, Piled Higher & Deeper is a comic strip about grad school life which is scarily accurate at times, as well as being quite funny in a geeky kinda way. Well worth a look.
