this got me thinking you all know that because you can hear the clanking. This is off the top of my head without consulting full results just their general careers up to F1.

What about drivers that would not have received a SL had they existed at the time but went on to success. Starting in the 50s and 60s on entering their first F1 race. Possibly Fangio  but probably almost certainly Mike Hawthorn   Jack Brabham G Hill  B MaClaren Jim Clark John Surtees and Mario Andretti.

And that fellow, what was his name, Lauda?

Specious argument though.  There isn't a single F1 debutant prior to 1970 (or even later) who would have received a super licence.

Not under today's criteria, that's for sure.

Loeb is a lot more talented than Colton Herta. But I still wouldn't have given him a SL.

He was pretty slow when he tested a Toro Rossi from memory, though that shouldn’t be too shocking for obvious reasons!

He wasn't pretty slow from memory, and good enough to warrant a drive; multiple WRC champion, 2nd at Le Mans.......

Yet F1 drivers can turn up to a WRC event, and drive; Kubica & Raikkonen made a habit of throwing in at the scenery......

I dare say they'd turn down Kalle Rovanpera as well.....

Also, pre-superlicence era, there was the Spaniard Jorge de Bagration who was denied entry to the Spanish Grand Prix in 1968 and 1974. - https://web.archive....tion/index.html
