This looks most exciting Richard! Is a July publication date realistic though? Might it be available in time for Goodwood?

Yes and yes!

A note on the Porsche Racing book...

It's been said that no one has attempted this before. I'm obliged to mention that anyone who has my four-volume "Excellence" (1.2 million words) will find a heck of a lot about Porsche's racing.

Also the book on Cobb's Crusader has been mentioned. This dramatic story is well told in similar detail in my biography of Reid Railton. I differ with its author in a number of areas.

As for my own efforts, "Supercharging" has been written and I'm now grappling with the images in 47 chapters.

The box set of Railton volumes were well worth the investment, for far more than the Cobb saga (although he does come off well in both).  Enjoyed them very much as well.  Fascinating era of development.  And courage.

I wonder if I am alone in being uneasy about books and articles which focus on someone's death, whether it be in the title or the content. It's like viewing a life through a distorting lens, emphasising a moment which ended a life but was not part of it.

In 2017 the same author, Kevin Guthrie, published a book titled Jim Crawford - The Life of a Modest Racing Hero.  It was, I think, self-published as a run of 300.  Is Lessons in Courage the same book or is it significantly different?

Thanks.  I’ve ordered it with fingers crossed. Keith Bluemel’s involvement is encouraging and the vendor’s (McKlein) return policy is fairly accommodating….just in case,

I cancelled my purchase of the 550 Maranello book. I decided I didn’t want it “that” much. ;)

And me - especially if the cast of characters as promised all turn up.  Also I can combine with my long overdue visit to Brooklands Museum.

I don't think that's being a bad loser.  The fix was in, and I think it adds spice that PT or Barry, or the fans don't forget.  I don't really have favorite drivers or teams, so that isn't about Helio v PT.  It was a case like AD 2021 where bad officiating decisions lessened the sporting outcome for all parties.

Well, I guess it's a "thing" in US culture these days, fake news and all that. Insinuating keeps it in the public's mind, no matter how far-fetched. "Some say it was the biggest crowd ever on Inauguration Day" to "Many believe we won the last election" is just one small step for man, but a giant slump for society. Let's wait and see where it'll take you.

Ouch, that hurts.

I mean it's been adjudicated and all by TG so it must have been the right decision; but Sam Hornish said PT was ahead when it went yellow, and there might have been some strong arming of the results due to the split.  I think all the parties are over it, but still like to take a rhetorical poke to let it be known acceptance isn't necessarily agreement.

But it's a long stretch from that to the crazy big lie business that the post-Citizens United decision US political culture has allowed to fester in recent memory.  Personally I find that terrible, and have nothing but respect for our volunteer poll workers and local officials (although I live in NE, where sanity and discretion are the norm...YMMV in some other states).  There is no sign that voter fraud has impacted any elections in the US, it's been a bs story all along.  As I've told many friends, even the Heritage Foundation's database of voting irregularities shows so few cases that it's statistically irrelevant.  Sorry to digress towards the paddock.  But really, it stings to be herded into that camp.  Mods, dispose of this as you see fit.

I emailed Porter Press to ask if their new Hesketh book would be available at the Members Meeting at Goodwood on the 15th/16th April, they replied to say that they'd have a sample book to look at but copies wouldn't be available to buy until nearer the end of the month. They also said that they'd be accepting pre-orders soon.

I purchased the book 'Forty Six: The Birth of Porsche Motorsport' published by Dalton Watson this week and what an interesting and glossy book it is.  Books with multiple authors are quite rare these days and so it was interesting to see how well the book flowed with a number of authors.  I especially like the section at the end of the book which has translations to the documents in it, what a great addition as it opens up so much more information to those who, like me, do not have multiple languages!

I'm looking forward to this book but the thing that really jumped out at me from the porterpress link was:

"Foreword by Jools Holland."

Really? That seems a very odd choice to me.

Also very interesting from Porter Press' last newsletter:

From the moment Doug Nye showed me, several years ago, some amazing photographs of very early motor racing by Maurice-Louis Branger (1895-1950), I was hooked. We are now working together on a first volume of these amazing images dating back to the very early 1900s. For me, and I hope you will agree, they reek of atmosphere and are pure art. If all goes well, we plan to produce a limited number per year.

So, Tyrrell has been completed and is on its way to the printers. Should be back in June.

Would you like an extensive extract from the book?
And a few photos?

Take a peek, chapter 14, covering the 1984 season for preview.

Exactly! I see that your Tyrrell book has a foreword by Jackie Stewart which makes complete sense. Beyond being "a car guy" I can't see the relevance of Jools Holland to Hesketh, especially when they could have got someone like Lord Hesketh or Bubbles Horsley or a driver like Rupert Keegan to write the foreword.

Indeed! The sentence "we plan to produce a limited number per year" is a bit disturbing. I'd love to have all potential volumes.

I know this is another book on Jim Clark, but the new(ish) title 'Jim Clark en France' by Dominique Vincent is actually a most interesting addition.  The book focuses solely on the events Clark raced at in France and has a wealth of pictures and images I have not seen elsewhere.  The book is dual language (French and English), with information not solely related to Clark, but also on the race itself.  The book is £60 from Hortons and £59 from Cotswold Road and Race.  The book is very well produced on good quality paper.  I've really enjoyed reading it.

Unfortunately, post-Brexit, it has become increasingly difficult to send books - and indeed other items - to EU countries. It doesn't help that some EU countries don't seem to understand or correctly implement the recent changes in customs arrangements either (which are not all due to Brexit, but certainly don't help!) The Dutch and Germans have improved in recent months, but Italy is still pretty much a disaster area. At the end of last year a correctly labelled book I sent from Bath to a buyer in Rotterdam took almost a month due to customs hold-ups in the Netherlands. I could have walked there quicker! And then there are the almost impenetrable German VerpackG packaging recycling regulations ...

My guess would be that Speedyhen have had a lot of items returned due to the inefficient way some postal and customs services have implemented the new rules - there are myriad stories of VAT surcharges being demanded, even when all the paperwork and labelling has been correct and the customer has paid the requisite charges at the time of ordering. Understandably, customers have been refusing deliveries, and by the time these parcels get back the contents are probably no longer in mint condition. I've noticed some booksellers on ABE have now stopped sending to Europe too.

It is slowly improving, and Royal Mail now scan every export parcel - tracked or not - into their system, whether or not it's going to the EU. So there is more information available to the receiving office abroad. Previously only tracked items were scanned.

Fascinating.

Thank you for giving us an insider’s insight into the impact of Brexit on this area of the book trade.

As in many fields, Brexit has clearly had a largely un envisaged impact…..

Speedyhen is not shipping to Europe (i.e. not only the member states from the EU). This is why I ask myself whether this situation is (or not) entirely due to Brexit.

It's all ultimately connected to the EU's VAT harmonization rules - which would have affected the UK even without Brexit. I guess it's understandable, given the differing VAT rates for books across the continent, but it's damnably frustrating. Until the end of 2021 anything I posted to the EU didn't need a customs label - although EFTA countries like Norway and Switzerland did. Now everything going abroad needs one! Even the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and British Forces PO addresses count as 'abroad'.

https://www.vatupdat...-harmonization/

So again, from Speedyhen's POV it was probably better just to say 'no Europe' rather than field questions as to why people in Norway could order but Swedes and Danes couldn't.

I've had a few sales to buyers in the Irish Republic which have been delivered to warehouses just over the border that act as accommodation addresses, thus avoiding (at least) the extra cost of postage to non-UK addresses. I've no idea what the 'deliver onwards' arrangements are though! VAT isn't an issue there as books are zero-rated in Ireland too, but I suspect there are probably other savings on larger and more expensive items ...

Strange because they are owned by Amazon. Mind you, they stopped being so competitive on price when Amazon bought them which did give me the impression it was primarily about removing a competitor.

So, Tyrrell has been completed and is on its way to the printers. Should be back in June.

Would you like an extensive extract from the book?
And a few photos?

Take a peek, chapter 14, covering the 1984 season for preview.

Congratulations for what's going certainly to be a superb addition to our libraries. And congratulations also to you and EVRO for bucking the trend amongst motorsport literature publishers and actually releasing representative extracts of the book plus a TOC. Can't wait to get it in my hands!
