How it was supposed to be originally. Chris' interviews and words with Juttas wonderful pictures. Celebrating both the best of F2 and the weird, the wonderful, the obscure and so on.
As a coffee table picture book, it's up there with the best but from a historical research tool and informative read, it's not at all comprehensive.

I confess I felt the same, and it was the reason I bought it. The long interviews Chris did (and Jeffrey Hutchison was also implied at the beginning, wasn't he?) would be great for any book and, being extremely interested in the F2, I was expecting it.

Chris told me he has 100+ hours of recorded interviews with a huge number of the protagonists, but he hasn’t been able to transcribe them - and doesn’t really think he’ll be able to ….

Strange, got a message saying  a post had been published quoting my previous one, asking if the Jesumaría's book was only available on Kindle- It seems it just disappeared, but in any case, no, it can also be bought  as a paper book, at least in Argentina

The latest Porter Press "Driving Pleasure" newsletter arrived today and I am intrigued by the following:

Talking of prolific, the great Doug Nye is currently working on no less than three books (with two more seriously exciting potential ones for next year) for us. He is well advanced with the one on the fabulous 4-litre-engined Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Competizione and the first of three volumes on Luigi Chinetti Sr and the NART story. The third book, which he has nearly finished writing, cannot be mentioned as yet. Mysterious? It is supposed to be!

I wonder if this mysterious third book might be BRM Volume 4 which, I understand from previous comments on this forum, is going to be published by Porter Press?

I recently bought a copy of Faces of Formula 1: The Sixties featuring the photography of Dr. Benno Muller. It's a lovely book if you're interested in portraiture but be warned, there's only one picture with a racing car and that doesn't appear until the last page. Nonetheless, an enjoyable book and not too expensive either at £55 direct from the publisher. More details here.

Would ‘Wall Smacker: The Saga of the Speedway’ by Peter de Paolo (1935) count on the list or should we create another on for drivers bios and auto bios.  Just asking?

Again with my charity selling hat on - I've just uploaded a couple of choice items which may appeal and/or fill a gap on your bookshelves.

Firstly, a mint signed copy of Tony Goodwin's 'Doctor on the Grid' - item # 267192845149 SOLD!

Secondly, a copy of the BRDC/TAG Heuer special edition of Autocourse 2012-13 - item # 267192845481

These both came from the same donor and are also 'gift aided', so HMRC will pay us an extra 20% over and above the purchase price.

Power Unleashed

Trailblazers Who Energised Engines

with Supercharging and Turbocharging

by Karl Ludvigsen

Multi-award-winning author Karl Ludvigsen takes the reader behind the scenes of the roller-coaster ride of supercharging, turbocharging and even more exotic power-boosting inventions throughout automotive and aviation history. Supercharging in all its forms is the most exciting feature ever created to go under the bonnet of a motor car. Blowers were rare yet highly desirable devices in their early heyday of the 1920s and ’30s, an era in which compressors graced supremely glamorous and race-winning cars. They also won respect from aviators eager to exploit high altitudes.

Prolific use of forced induction in the air in World War 2 brought forth the many engineering geniuses who populate these pages. Having seemed abandoned on land, supercharging found new acolytes who perfected blowers for road and track. They rescued the turbocharger to open new avenues for high-pressure boosting in the 1970s and ’80s. Into the 21st century turbocharging has found its way into more and more cars to enhance both performance and fuel efficiency.

Power Unleashed is a three-volume work of astonishing depth and detail. Greatly respected for his ability to communicate information while telling a compelling story, Karl Ludvigsen explores the global saga of supercharging and turbocharging. Complete with reader-friendly technical descriptions and magnificent illustrations, he introduces the fascinating individuals who bet their businesses on boosting. This is a landmark work in the histories of the automobile and aeroplane.

This book comprises three hardback volumes in a slipcase.

That's great news. The website of Taschen is also announcing it: here.

The quantity of pages (356) is identical to the limited edition, the main difference being the size of the book.

For anyone interested, Amazon UK have this at £71.69 currently.

Just the other day, I received my copy of Pete Lyons’ memoir, My Travels on Racer Road.  The book is 551 pages long and filled with pictures.  I have only gotten to 1962, thus far covering his roaming Europe, 21 years old, with almost no money, on a decrepit motorcycle.  A good read and my quick scan of the rest of the book shows it is filled with more fascinating anecdotes.  I highly recommend it.

North American readers can buy direct from Pete:

Readers outside of North America can purchase it from Evro:

Has anyone seen or bought Sauro Torreggiani’s work. He is covering year by year every car and variant to have participated or tried to in a Grand Prix. He’s done 1970 through to 1999 so far and now doing the 1950s.  They look impressive but unfortunately I think anyone wanting them will have to pay Amazon for the privilege due to these being independently published. Happy browsing.

Volume 5!  That's hilarious.  So when Volume 4 finally appears everyone who has been waiting for volume 4 can start waiting for Volume 5 instead.

Joking aside, it will be interesting to what format they choose to go with.  Obviously, publishing has advanced since the previous volumes were published but, on the other hand, I imagine owners of the previous volumes would like all the volumes to match in terms of size and shape at least.

I spoke with Philip Porter and all I can say is from what I heard the wait will have been worth it. I couldn't have been more impressed with the plans for volumes 4 and 5, hopefully we will see 4 in time for the Revival.

My impression (and therefore possibly incorrect) is that Volume 5 will be for information that has come to light since the publication of Volumes 1-3 (a bit like Simon Moore's The 8C Story Continues) plus an index covering all volumes, something which is surprisingly missing from the books published to date. Again, my impression is that there won't be a long wait for this Volume.

Perhaps Doug can enlighten us further now that the cat is officially out of the bag?

I am having a book clearance. Most but not all are books I've reviewed for speedreaders. With the moderator's kind approval I'm offering them here before they go on eBay . Please PM me your email if interested and I'll send a list  .

All are being sold at half RRP(so no offers please - leave that for Ebay)

As most are free review copies   I 'd be uncomfortable about profiting from them and proceeds will go to a charity I support.

The fact I'm selling  a book is not a reflection of its quality , but simply of the fact that I very rarely re-read motoring books . They take up space and I'd rather do some good  by selling them.

Official confirmation of BRM V4 in the latest Porter Press newsletter:

BRM Volume 4

For many years at Goodwood, customers have been asking us, ‘Will Doug Nye ever write Volume 4?’, referring to his definitive history of the iconic British team. I can now reveal, the answer is a resounding ‘Yes’. And, furthermore, he has nearly completed the writing. And – there is more – I can also share with Book Club members that there will be a Volume 5 as well. We are thrilled, and honoured, to be working with Doug and the Owen family again.

We are aiming to launch Vol 4 at the Goodwood Revival meeting.

Good news, bad news…. It’s coming out but if their previous prices are anything to go on, I won’t be able to afford it.

Although, to be fair, volumes 1-3 weren't exactly cheap in their day. Cheapest second-hand copies of Vol 1 now command the best part of £100, which is way above the cover price. Volume 2, which was reprinted, IIRC - upwards of £50.  Cheapest copy of Volume 3 I found on a quick search of viaLibri - £130.

Porter Press will give you 10% discount if you subscribe to their emails. Speedyhen often give 20% off Porter’s titles, so there are ways of reducing costs.

You’re right though, books are expensive. One of my reasons for following this forum is the comments help me decide what books to buy and what not to bother with.

Looking at my copies, Vol 2 was priced at £70 when new and Vol 3 was £80. I don't know about Vol 1 as there isn't a price on the jacket and it's too long ago now to remember. I would generally agree with the values you give for the books today but it was actually Vol 1 that was reprinted in 2003 to coincide (I assume) with the issue of Vol 2.

As far as Porter Press book prices go, they vary hugely from publication to publication so my hope is that BRM Vol 4 will be priced in line with the original MRP prices above.

None of my copies are priced. I can't remember who I bought Volumes 2 and 3 from, but I do clearly recall buying Volume 1 from Waterstones in Exeter in 1994 and the sales assistant saying to a colleague that she was right- she knew it'd sell!

They are, provided you still have the dust jackets, just not where you'd normally expect - the price is actually on the back top left corner of the jacket.

Even better, they're doing a Publisher's Edition of 200 autographed by Bobby Rahal, Keke Rosberg, Michael Andretti, Jacques Villeneuve (Gilles' brother, not son), Scott Goodyear & Tom Gloy as well as author Gordon Kirby. Price is $130 + P&P which seems very reasonable so I've ordered a copy. More details here.

Ah yes, just spotted them on volumes 2 and 3-same price as you quoted. No price on volume 1.

I imagine that it'll be more pricey than the Great Cars series, in line with the Vanwall, Hesketh or BRM books.

Yes, that's what I was thinking (and hoping).

Does anybody know what is happening with the publication of Editions Cercle D'Art's "Car Racing 1971" in the UK? I saw the published book at Retromobile back at the beginning of February but every time it gets to the UK publication date the date is moved back again. Speedy Hen have had it on pre-order for months but their latest date of 21st April has now been put back to 12th May. Meanwhile Amazon have publication as 26th May. It appears to be available everywhere except the UK. Why? I wish I'd bought a copy in Paris in February.

The publishers seem to have changed the cover photo too

I am having a book clearance. Most but not all are books I've reviewed for speedreaders. With the moderator's kind approval I'm offering them here before they go on eBay . Please PM me your email if interested and I'll send a list .

All are being sold at half RRP(so no offers please - leave that for Ebay)

As most are free review copies I 'd be uncomfortable about profiting from them and proceeds will go to a charity I support.

The fact I'm selling a book is not a reflection of its quality , but simply of the fact that I very rarely re-read motoring books . They take up space and I'd rather do some good by selling them.

There's some good bargains to be had here, and all for a good cause.

At long long last!

This is one I was waiting for so much more eagerly than some out hear are waiting for (dare I mention it) the 4th volume of a certain British car builder that built one of the most extreme examples that will no doubt will appear in this book as well....

Pre-order made.

Got a message that my copy of "Power Unleashed" is on its way.

No doubt first to the Customs agency for inspection so I can bleed again for it another time....

Oh well....

I ordered it some weeks ago via Amazon Belgium, which is currently selling the book for a discounted 259€ (free P&P and, most importantly, no surprises in the form of import charges!).

The drawback is that is planned to be shipped by mid July  :drunk: .
