Inspired by reading the recent thread about James Hunt and Patrick Depailler, I dug out my 'Lap of the Gods' DVD from the late Chris Nixon's Terrific Stuff Videos. For those of you who have never seen Lap of the Gods, it's a fantastic collection of onboard laps on Grand Prix cars produced by Alain Boisnard's AFAVA film company from the 70's and 80's; shot on film mainly from above the drivers head, at a time when onboard laps were very rare, even more so the fact that they gave a driver's eye view, the camera being mounted on the roll bar. It gives a great insight into what turbo charged GP cars were like to drive, as well as how fearless Depailler, Pironi and others were in DFV engined cars. Brunswick also mounted their cameras on GP cars for a couple of their season reviews but they were of the one sided view, being usually mounted on the sidepod or side of the engine cover. As far as i know, onboard TV cameras in GP racing were first tried in 1982 on Piquet's Brabham but the pictures weren't transmitted, and it wasn't until 1985 that they were actually shown during races - very sparingly in fact, an example being the 1986 British GP. Phillipe Streiffs Tyrrell had an onboard camera mounted but the pictures were only shown once, for two corners, during the race! (Unless you count a replay of the aborted start which only French TV showed...)

Anyway, I digress. On the back of the video release of Lap of the Gods, Chris Nixon commented that he had seen a fleeting onboard clip of Senna in the Lotus 99T at Monaco on the BBC in 1987, and traced its origin to Alain Boisnard, owner of AFAVA. Alain commented that he had filmed hundreds of laps in the 70's and 80's for promotional material for ELF. And so on Lap of the Gods, there are about 30 of these laps covering 23 circuits, with drivers from Andretti to Warwick and many in between, from about 1976 to 1988. After a whiling a couple of hours away today on YouTube, where a few AFAVA clips other than the ones on Lap of the Gods appear, I've compiled a list by driver, car, year and circuit of all the onboard laps from AFAVA i know of, which appears below.

Can anybody add to this list? Im curious to know what other driver's machines Alain Boisnard mounted his cameras onto. Although the films were for ELF, some of the laps were aboard non-ELF sponsored cars, Niki Lauda's Brabham Alfa at Zolder and Alessandro Nannini's Minardi at Suzuka for example. I wonder if there are any laps aboard a turbo-era Ferrari out there? Or perhaps another lap aboard the Matra powered Ligier JS9 other than Jacque Laffite blasting around Monza.

Here's the list; corrections are welcome.

Derek Warwick, Montreal 1984
Philippe Streiff, Montreal 1988

The BBC showed an on-borad of Niki Lauda in Austria in 1982, was it Boisnard?
I have also seen an on-board from Imola 1983 (Cecotto, Theodore) and from Monaco 1984 (practice, from a Tyrrell?).

Patrick Depailler tested a helmet-mounted camera at Paul-Ricard in December 1974.

There exists on-board footage from Le Mans 1978 with Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Bernard Giroux (as passenger).
One of the WM-Peugeots showed live on-board coverage from Le Mans in 1980.

Are we concentrating on the onboards made by AFAVA or onboards that was made in the 1970s and 1980s by various people?

I only can remember seeing footage of Francois Henault at the 1985 German Grand Prix for the third Renault car.

What surprise me is that Boisnard never made on-board footage at the Nordschleife. If so, I haven't seen it. What can be more spectacular than the Tyrrell P34 at the old Ring in the hands of Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler?

In Boisnard's tribute to Depailler called ADIEU L'ENFANT there are also a very short clip of Patrick driving the Elf2 Formula 2 car - only from the front. Surely more footage of this specific recording must exist somewhere. Does anyone know where one can find it or have seen it? I presume the year must be 1973.

Forgot to mention:

Boisnard's work also include the following movies in French, but I haven't seen them so can't comment if they also have on-board footage:

François Cevert : Le destin d'un Prince
Il était une fois, Jean Pierre Beltoise
Henri Pescarolo, Un homme tranquille

Cool FLB, i'll add those two to the list.

I'm not sure who filmed Niki Lauda in Austria '82, IIRC it was a side mounted camera? Brunswick filmed John Watson around Silverstone in 1980, maybe they did this as well. It doesn't show up on their website's archive list https://www.brunswic...ubCategoryId=23 but who knows.

Is Cecotto's lap this one? http://uk.youtube.co...h?v=IfwxbDQaPpA not sure if it's Boisnard.

I've also found another of Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell 008, this time at Monaco. AFAVA kept Ken Tyrrell busy on Friday's and Saturday's in 1978! http://uk.youtube.co...h?v=vnc6p3YOg9Q

I guess i could start up another list of other onboard's before they became commonplace during race broadcasts. Where to stop?! :)

I've always wondered why he didn't record anything at the Nordshleife too. Mayby the ADAC were still wary of the film camera that Graham Hill hit when it came off the car in front of him in '62(?)

Some of ADIEU L'ENFANT is here. http://uk.youtube.co...h?v=miQlQZ4a-Vg

Patrick TAMBAY Renault RE40 Osterreichring 1983 Camera mounted on nose cone.

Is the year / car correct? Didn't Tambay qualify on pole for Ferrari at the Osterreichring in 1983?

Not so sure, since we all know the spectacular footage of Howden Ganley driving the useless Williams in 1973. If Howden could fly a donkey, like this car, I really long to see on-board footage at the Ring of some of the really fast cars of the time.

Doh! You're absolutely right Crowthorne. I'm not sure if the clip is from '84 or '85 but i'll put '85 for now because it fits in with the other laps Tambay did for AFAVA that year.

Doh again! You're right as well Hieronymus. As well as the onboard stuff of Moss filmed for BP and the onboard stuff from a Formula Vee behind Hubert Hahne's Lola BMW in '67 that i forgot about. And i only had one glass of wine at lunch...

Yes something from a Tyrrell or Ligier in '76 at the 'ring would be awesome.

You can purchase some AFAVA movie here : http://www.afava.com/

Did you know that, Alain Boisnard was a cousin of Francois Guiter and Alain purchase some stuff from Steve McQueen Solar to put camera on Formula 1 (it was the stuff from the Le Mans movie)

The Alain's wife, Anne, was the Prost and McLaren timekeeper before Olivetti came in Formula 1

ABC broadcasted an onboard lap with Alain Prost in his Renault RE30B at the 1982 Detriot Grand Prix.

Maybe an other AFAVA onboard lap?

Thanks ReWind, much appreciated. :)

Bigears, it could be, i think AFAVA exclusively filmed and produced materal for Elf until at least 1992 (not sure after that).

Do you perhaps know if they also made any F2 or F3 footage. In F2 I am thinking of the Elf2 (Alpine) driven by Cevert and Depailler or even other ELF sponsered cars in this formula. Perhaps also footage of the Alpines in French F3 races? I do not see any reference on AFAVA's website in this regard.

Maybe for the Elf2, because it was an Elf's paid car. But i am not sure they have a movie only for Formula2 (i dont think so just because Boisnard was not interested in motorarcing, just Formula 1 because of Elf. They have also, i think, some movie about "Pilote" or Volant ELF"; you should ask them by email.

Hmmm, looks a bit of a mess. Hopefully you can read it, or someone can edit it to make more sense!

There was also a forward-facing camera on Laffite's car. The most I've seen of this sequence is in Yves Hébert's Gilles Villeneuve tribute, Formula Villeneuve.

There's an on-board shot of Laffite in what seems to be the JS19 in the 1981 F1 annual video review, Start to Finish (track unknown).

I don't see it in this thread, but there is also footage from both Renaults from Dijon 1979.

Was the on-board sequence from Regazzoni at Kyalami 1980 taken by AFAVA?

Thanks for the info, FLB. It would be interesting to see something from Dijon onboard.

I've been wondering about Clay Regazzoni's lap at Kyalami, it could be AFAVA, they might have also filmed the infamous Hans Heyer in the ATS lapping Hockenheim in 1977 (Onboard filming of your only ever GP practice session - now thats what you call 15 minutes of fame!)

Is this chassis that Stewarts driving on the pace lap a Renault RS01? Strange more was never made of this tie up, or indeed the idea of an F1 car driving in front of the field on a pace lap.

Slightly off topic but does anyone know how many Season Reviews AFAVA did in the 70's (did they do any in the 80's?) I know they used onboard laps on them - could anyone please tell me where it is possible to get hold of these AFAVA reviews, I would really love to see them - seen the odd snippet on Youtube and it looks fantasic! (still anoyed I was too young to enjoy those days!)

I recall seeing onboard footage with Prost at Monaco 1983. The BBC showed it in the preamble to the race.

*EDIT*
Seems it was 1982 footage but I am sure it was shown ahead of the 1983 race.

About the unknown-track shot from onboard Laffite's Ligier at the start of the 1981 season review, I have a feeling the track is Dijon-Prenois.
