The 908/3 is my favourite race car from the 70's - apparently there are a few still raced today. Seeing some pictures of the Targa Florio recently reminded me that I've never seen one actually on the track.

Anyone know who owns them and where in Europe I could get to see one in action?

Thanks,
Michael

Hello Michael,

I saw 3 Porsches 908/3 in the Le Mans Classic Endurance Series race at Spa, 2004 :

Swiss Jean Marc Luco in 908/3-001 :
Posted Image

? Flettner in 908/3-007 - it had a 6 cylinder engine :
Posted Image

Peter Brunn in 908/3-003 (this car was subject of an article in Motor Sport and was for sale in 2004) :
Posted Image
The Brunn 908 also ran in one of the support races of the 2004 Spa 6H.

908/3-001 later went into French hands (Miloe brothers) and was seen at the Le Mans and Spa Classic Endurance Series races. Here it is in 2006 :
Posted Image

The car was serviced by Mecauto but went to Willy Kauhsen Racing in 2007 and raced at the Nürburgring Old Timer GP in the Orwell Series. It was entered at Spa one week later but didn't show up. Later I heard a story of the car being seized by a bailiff, ordered by a client of Kauhsen who was still waiting for some money...

A frequent guest at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is 908/3-009 (Porsche museum).
It was driven by Vic Elford in 2004 and 2006 :

Then there's the 908/4 driven by Jean-Marc Luco in this year's Le Mans Classic Endurance race at Spa :

Looks like a trip to Spa may be on the cards next year then:) Goodwood festival maybe not, need more than one blast up the hill.

Out of interest, anyone any idea what one of these would change hands for?

Chassis 908-02-010 went up for auction at Bonhams, Quail Lodge sale in 2004 but did not sell. The guide price was $725000-$775000.

Another one, but no price given.

I think this one is still for sale.

The one still for sale is a 908/2 or 908 'Flunder'.

Michael

Some info here, at the bottom of the page:

http://www.wsrp.ic.c...orsche_908.html

We've seen Brian Redman drive the Collier car (013?) at the Monterey Historics...but I don't know if that one ever comes to Europe?

A typo I guess : I dont think 908/3 went as high as chassis 018 (013 the last one ?). About Porsche 908 in general, a new book seems to be coming soon :

http://www.amazon.de...r/dp/3898808378

Anyone knowing more about it ?

There were two 908-3's at the Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona this past weekend. One nearly beat a 917-30 in an 8 lap race.

The car pictured above and shown as 908/4... is that 908/3 chassis number 4, or was there actually a 908/4.
(I'm not nitpicking, I'm just not clear on that).
Is that the car that Reinhold Joest ran with a flat-6 turbo motor (that I think overlapped into the 936 era) or am I horribly confused?

It's a 908/4 from 1975 and is an evolution of the 908/3. It had a twin turbo engine.

Ah - ok, thanks Pedro.
So is that broadly the same as the Joest car (which I've now seen cited as 908/3T), or was that a non-works development?

This is one of them, the ex-Marko/van Lennep Martini Racing car (and also the one that, with Phil d'Aigrepont behind the wheel, nearly beat the 917-30 driven by Jim Torres. Well, at least it was quite close in the opening stages of the race).

Seems amazing these cars are anywhere near still running. After all, their design brief was to be extra-extra lightweight in construction.

They are great, bodywork on or off - so compact and purposeful.

Surprised by the size of the rear slicks on some shots - for such a light and small car they are huge!

I recently heard this one has been sold.
I also remember a story attributed to Redman, where he suggested they need a driver like Douglas Bader for it. There being no tubes etc to protect feet & ankles.

Also found a picture of the other 908/3 at the "Rennsport Reunion" last week, this one in "Gulf" livery, chassis number 013, owned by the Collier Collection.

This appears to be the same car as in post 23 (and in post 2 and post 20). Is this 003 or 011? The post 23 2005 Nurburgring car was listed as Klaus Flettner. At the Rennsport Reunion last weekend, there were four 908/03s listed, one driven by Fritz Kozka from Radebeul, Germany. Is that the car in post 24? See "Tentative Entry List" and "Exhibition 1" here:

http://www.rennsport2007.com/

At Spa in 2004, Klaus Flettner had 007, which just sold in April, 2007, according to post 6. So has Flettner raced 007 and the Brunn car?

Back in 1970 I took this photo.... To my knowledge THIS is the car later owned by Brunn. And according to raceannouncer's post the car is now in the US.

The 917/30 at Rennsport was having turbo problems - made for a great race though! I took this shot at Elkhart Lake in July 2007, Redman of course.

No, my post was about the car in the photo in post 24, apparently the Brunn car, which was at Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona. I was asking if it now belonged to Fritz Kozka of Germany or somebody else, possibly in the US.

Here are some more shots (courtesy of Pelican Parts) of the Gulf 908 at Rennsport that was driven by John Morton. He said it was really a great weekend getting to drive the car on Sat. and Sun.

BTW: Is this the original colour, the car was painted in 1970? There are pictures, that show the car should have been painted in a yellow colour code?

Right, Holger, the car was yellow back in 1970.

The Joest 908/3 Turbo was also referred to as the 908/4 Turbo. It was actually chassis 008. If I recall correctly, the 908/3 Turbo was a 908/3 plus a 911/78 2.14 liter turbo f-6. In 1980, some sort of deal was cut and Joest ended up with a 908 that was identical to the 936/78 which was . . . chassis 004. Officially this was a 908/80.

So, the 908/3 Turbo and the 908/4 Turbo were the 'same' car using chassis 008 and was a Joest hot-rod (now is that defaming a icon?).

Okay, I was a little bit surprised about the sponsor stickers, looks a little bit modified, but they are new.

Friends:

908/2 022 is in a private collection in Colorado. I'm told the first owner, Juergen Neuhaus, ran it in Interserie races (with Gesipa sponsorship, in blue and yellow paint), and later it went to Bobby Rahal, who had it restored. The car is said to be in running condition.
