This Sunday the McLaren driver will swap his MP4-22 for TopGears Suzuki Liana.

"Lewis was the one everyone wanted to see take to the circuit. He may be a top racing driver, but he had to go around with The Stig first to learn all about the track," a BBC source said.

Top Gear will not let on how fast Lewis's lap was other than to say: "It was fast as you'd expect. But you'll have to wait and see exactly how fast."

To see Hamilton's lap times you'll need to tune into Top Gear on Sunday at 8pm, where you can also find out how he compared to fellow F1 racer Mark Webber as well as former British drivers Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell and current record holder The Stig (1.44.4).

Maybe this is all part of a new Mclaren Suzuki deal

PS. Maybe The Stig wil take the vacant McLaren Seat??????????

Unfair comparison really. The Stig has done hundreds of laps of the track. It's more accurate to compare Lewis to Mansell, Hill, Webber etc. It will be interesting to see if he beats the Mansell time.

Did anyone see the Jennifer Saunders lap on Sunday?! She almost set the best celeb time! Came in 2nd behind Simon Cowell.

From what I read it was a wet lap too, so dependant on just how wet the conditions were he will be racing against Webber...

BTW The stigs time is a 1 44.4 Mansells is a 1 44.6 not to bad for the old man huh ;) I'd love to see what he could do in a F1 car nowadays...

Webber's lap on Top Gear was also done in wettish conditions if I can remember correctly.

Extremely wet. It was an excellent lap but Mansell's competitive spirit was a joy to see - cutting corners everywhere.

I bet this is why it's being billed as a 'head to head'. The existing stig record of 1.44.4 will be on a dry track, and they will have needed to have set an appropriate wet benchmark for lewis. Ron wouldn't let it happen any other way I'm sure.

What I'm most interested to see is Jeremy giving him a verbal kicking in the interview.

Imagine the Stig ended up at Mclaren.... Ron would have a heart attack trying to get him to talk to the press

I thought Mansell's time was brilliant given how heavy he is. We all know weight has a big influence on lap times. I imagine Hamilton is probably several chicken curries lighter than Mansell and therefore needs to be faster than the old man to demonstrate similar skill.

I recon Ron would live to have a driver that never talks, no windging to the press :p

I love the episode of TG where a petrol station assistant askes Stig if he has a nectar card ;). Oh and he hands over his cash card from "The Bank of Money" :rotfl:

Unfortunately Lewis' lap was also in the wet so no chance of 1st place I doubt. :(

For F1 drivers they still use the Suzuki Liana.
We can now see what lewis is like without TC ;)...

Apparantly a spy reported that lewis found the increase in power from the Suzuki Liana compared to the McMerc MP4-22 difficult to control. Also the Suzuki has better grip, aero and downforce, less tyreware and better fuel econemy.

The normal new car is the Chevrolet Lacetti. I've always hoped they'd get Menu or Huff to turn up in one of the WTCC Lacetti's and do a comparison with the road car.

This sunday is also the episode with Hamster driving the Renault F1 car. Looking forward to seing LH in the Liana - but more interested in how he comes across as a bloke in the interview - more than twice as many people watch TG as watch the average GP in the UK.

:p That's why I love Top Gear so much.

Oh...and The Stig for McLaren yes please. Wonder what sort of background music he would chose for, say, Monza.

Yep, excellent - I particularly liked the stream of expletives which seemed to go on for several seconds after the start of the lap. :D

Will be interesting to see Hamilton's lap this weekend: he'll beat Hill, who drove round chatting to the camera, but will he beat Webber, who was really on it? And when is Alonso booked for? :drunk:

The lap time you'll find out if you watch Sunday's show, but I will say I've been in the edit for two days since we recorded the show, and I still keep replaying his second to last corner, because I've never seen a piece of driving quite like it. The world is governed by the rules of physics, but he just seems to have his own set.

Setting him up for a fall IMO...

Well, The Stig is the best driver in the world.

Some say he sold F1 to Bernie long before he even owned it, and that if he could be bothered he could set up his own team tomorrow and win the title with 18 straight victories just to leave the sport after the last race.

All we know is ...

It goes without saying Hamilton is better than the Stig (at least at F1 cars ;) )...

The stig for the most part an assorted bunch of washed up touring car/gt/ex-junior formulae drivers correct? Hardly F1 standard.

In fact any top Formula Forder or part-time touring car racer who wasn't landed a full time drive, and acts as driving instructor could fang production cars around at a very slick pace.... possibly better than older F1 or NASCAR etc. guys who have got too comfortable in their ways and efforts to make the car handle better rather than to drive it harder in their usual rides (especially for NASCAR that will go slower if overdriven for example :) ).

Anyway.... several hundred laps in a Liana ought to be a distinct advantage to the stig. :D For a car with so little horsepower, the times between any professional drivers should vary very little... cleary all the dry laps times are within a few tenths between all the F1 guys.

Damon Hill's time was very disappointing. Miles off the pace. :

What a shame both Webber and Hamilton were in the wet. Makes comparisons too hard. :

Damon was the first F1 driver on track so he had nothing to compete against. He set the fastest time so far.

As Hill told Clarkson in the interview. He just wanted to go quickest.

And he did.

I'm not stating it as a fact but I would consider it likely that Hill would have gone quicker if Mansell had already set his time.

Sorry you're just more wrong than anyone has ever been in the history of the universe ever. The Stig is, as even the most puny-brained of simpleton MONG-WITS will tell you, the ultimate driver. The only reason he's not on the F1 grid is because HE CAN'T BE ARSED and not because he's any of these fictional drivers you mention.

The Stig has a nipple shaped like the nurburgring. All hail The Stig.

One thing is clear already - for all the huge audiences they always get, and the long list of A list stars they've had, this show is going to break all the records. This is simply because Hammy is totally special.

As (I predict) we shall see. :smoking:

I suspect Lewis was really to see if James May (aka Capt Slow) would take the second seat for 2008.
