As far as I know, he didn't. He raced for Pat Patrick's team all year, including Pocono. Did he drive a Newman-Haas car in practice or testing?Originally posted by HistoryFan

I would assume that after Emerson's retirement from GP driving at the end of 1980, it became even more difficult to secure sponsors. Although the brothers were still involved with the team, it to some extent became just another F1 outfit.

I've the infos from this site

the site has many mistakes. Perhaps Fittipaldi drove in Pocono for Patrick Racing, but on this site, he drove for Newman Haas. Perhaps a mistake...

As for the test at Rio, that came about after Spirit had been contacted by the not too fast F2 racer Fulvio Ballabio who was said to be able to get Disney sponsorship. In need of a famous driver to secure the Disney money, Spirit persuaded Emerson to consider a come back (as Lauda and Jones had done in 1982/83) and he tested the car at Rio, where most teams would test in the winter in those days. During the test the car did in fact feature Mickey Mouse stickers and Topolino logo's (Disney's brand in Italy i.e. Mickey's Italian name). Ballabio never got a superlicence, though, Spirit never got Disney's dollars and Emerson would not come back until 1985 when he put a March sportscar on pole for the Miami Grand Prix, the start of what would be a great second career in America.
By the way, in case you didn't know, Emerson was offered Lauda's Ferrari on the Sunday night after Niki's accident at the Nurburgring and half way through Fittipaldi's first season in the Copersucar. Part of the offer was that he could put the Copersucar brand on the Ferrari's rear wing if needed. Emerson declined, as he found the whole situation rather disgusting given the fact that Lauda, a friend, was fighting for his life. (Team manager Daniele Audetto of course then offered the drive to Peterson, who Count Zanon swiftly agreed to buy out of his March contract with Max Mosley. Audetto recently told me Lauda's 312 T2 was already adjusted to Ronnie for him to test at Fiorano, but when the rumour of Peterson joining Ferrari reached Lauda, the Austrian called Di Montezemolo, who called Agnelli, who called Enzo, who forced Audetto to end the deal with Peterson).

About Ferrari: After the Lauda-accident Ferrari asked a couple of great drivers. Rumors said, that Mario Andretti had also a offer from Ferrari!

Yeah, it's a goof on that webpage. Fittipaldi's team should be flip-flopped with Mario Andretti's directly below it.Originally posted by HistoryFan

1 other thing - the deal fell apart when the FIA turned down the CSI's application for a licence for Fulvio. Sadly his father died of a heart attack on hearing the news. Spirit did'nt pursue the matter after that. The CSI had been quite belligereant about Ballabio being given a licence despite his lack of qualifications. The head of the CSI at the time cited Hesnault getting a Superlicence despite only finishing 2nd in French F3, which wasnt qualification enought for a Superlicence. To be fair though, although he was'nt the best he was way better than Fulvio, who was on a par with Aldo Bertuzzi or Jean Pierre Frey (Dollop) IMHO.

Barilla had packed it in, confidence shot I believe. I think they probably stuck one of their test drivers like Morbidelli in there in the end didnt they? He'd been driving that Subaru engined 188 for them during the summer so was "in favour".

Spirit only had one good engine, which Ballabio promptly over-revved, so Emerson only got to drive the car with a very tired one and his times were, let's just say average.Originally posted by Formula Once

An interesting detail: Instead of the usual "Bell" sticker, Emerson's helmet carried a sticker saying "Hell" :

That's right, Gianni got the drive. In a way, it is a compliment to Giancarlo Minardi that he gave a chance to a talented young driver, although it would have been super to see Emmo return to F1.

Local Brazillian copy helmets according to the excellant GPI article at the time, Bell werent happy I believe. Emmo's then new girlfriend Theresa Hotte (I think, didnt he marry her for a bit?) was reportedly bored and fast asleep most of the time in his Ford Escort. Guess Emmo had really used up all his money then....
Apparently Emmo was also using the test to try and impress F1 owners with open seats, I guess at the time Bernie ?

Hi Sergio!
I've researched a lot about Carlos Pace in the last few weeks. And I know that Fernandes (not Fernandez?) was in the plane and died. But I'm not found out anything about his racing career. Have you more infos about that Brazilian Driver?

In Spanish it would be Fernandez, but since Brazil is Portuguese-speaking, it is Fernandes ;)Originally posted by HistoryFan
