Thank you you two.

But didn't de Ferran start for Edenbridge Racing, sat??? And I thought Ribeiro replaced Neto not de Ferran. Afaik he started for Paul Stewart Racing in 1992 when he won the title.
Did Paul Stewart Racing have a 2nd driver in the 1st race? I ask because Neto drove only in 5 races (races 2 - 6) but when did Ribeiro start (afaik he started in 6 races), so there are 5 drivers left where I don't know anything about the 2nd driver - or didn't they have one?

Don't stop posting, you're great!!!!

We bought this from Reynard who I think had loaned it to Fred or Fred had p/x'ed it back to them. Was a great car in Pekkas hands, I think Hilton Cowie had run it beforehands or perhaps that Brazillian Palhares. Its claim to fame with us was holding up Barrichello and Coulthard during frenetic lappery at Donington.

Gil drove the development works Reynard 913 at the first round,Thruxton ,but rolled it in testing.
Thereafter Reynard asked new F3 Team Edenbridge Racing to run 2 cars for Gil and Van Hool ,who had started the season in a Ralt 34. Had a good year with many teams changing to Reynards for 1992.

They (Reynard) really ruined it for themselves in 92 & 93 though did'nt they Peter? The F1 project and F3000 stretched them too far in my opinion. What did you make of Van Hools talent btw? His speed seemed a bit hit and miss, I recall him being very quick at Brands one time, but it seemed somewhat out of the blue.

So far I've only managed to find one of my photographs from the 1991 season.

I assume from the results shown above that I took this at the April Brands Hatch meeting. Rydell leads Coulthard and Barrichello.

If I find any more photographs I'll post them here.

Thank for your infos and the great picture, there are not many that I 've found.

Ah and I've found more race results :

Silverstone
10 Kozankov, Victor RUS Ralt RT 35 Alfa
Brands Hatch

15 Pyld, Uurmas EST Ralt RT 35 Alfa
19 Kozankov, Victor RUS Ralt RT 35 Alfa

But I don't know exactly which meetings are meant.

I've got a funny feeling Fred Goddard ran those pair of Russians (was one Estonian?)? I'm sure they spelt it Urmas Pold too, although that may have been wrong English translation. They had decent backing it seemed - Lukoil perhaps?

Pyld, Uurmas is definitely Pold, Urmas.

According to Alexey Rogachev Kozankov's and Pold's only results were :

19th May : Brands Hatch : 13th - Pold, 15th - Kosankov
27th May : Thruxton : 13th - Kosankov, 14th - Pold
9th June : Silverstone : 10th - Kosankov, retired - Pold
23rd June : Donington : 14th - Kosankov, 15th - Pold

And I know that both of them drove only 4 races, so there is no space left for :

15 Pyld, Uurmas EST Ralt RT 35 Alfa
19 Kozankov, Victor RUS Ralt RT 35 Alfa

Well, I've found it on a site called www.puru.de or something like this.

Well, I've found it on a site called www.puru.de or something like this.

Please be always cautious with the data taken from this web site (the address of its motor sport section is http://www.puru.de/motorsport.html). I checked the results posted to the 8W thread once again - everything is correct, only four races, and no trace of 15th and 19th place. Unfortunately Ray Purucker takes very little care of checking the race results which he posts to his web site, which is - except for numerous mistakes - a really universal East European racing encyclopaedia.

Pyld, Uurmas is definitely Pold, Urmas.

'õ' in Põld's last name is a specific Estonian sound, which is also present in Russian language. When writing Russian names in English, this sound is usually marked with 'y'. I guess that the spelling 'Pyld' appeared because the official documents of Apex Racing were translated from Russian, not from Estonian. So the chain probably was Põld (Estonian) -> Пылд (Russian) -> Pyld (English).

The one (maybe two) things I'd like to add to this thread is that virtually every practice/qualifying Reubens was the quickest but every race start he was rubbish and I mean absoloute rubbish, he just couldn't get going. I can't remeber one start where he didn't get overtaken by at least three cars but he was fantastic once he got going and IMHO opinion much, much better than Coulthard.

My second point was from an F3 race at Snetterton in '91 and I think it was when the TVR Tuscans supported F3; Dad and I stopped at the old Little Chef just outside Snetterton, as did all the West Surrey Racing team with Reubens. They made him come and sit with my Dad and I (even asking for an autograph!!) to find out how to start a race as they thought he had such a problem and Gerry Marshall was the best starter in the business; even now RB is my favourite driver on the grid but i won't go into that on this thread!

Ahh, the TOM's!

It was a development car for the company, all the effort went into making the cars used in Japan. The rest of the effort went into the WSPC.

Lot's of people admired the car. It was a pity that Rydell could not make better use of the potential. I suppose that his competition was a load of GP, Champ Car and Indy 500 winners did not help.

Here are some more starting numbers :

16 Tom Kristensen
18 Oliver Tan
20 Urmas Pold
22 Victor Kozankov
36 Steve Arnold
43 Hugo Spowers
47 Sandy Brody
50 Nigel Smith

Well, I’ve got some more questions :

1 When did Robertson change the car and began to race with his own team? He was replaced by Beretta who started according to my information competed in 7 races so it should be round 10 or did he miss another race?
2 Diniz started only in 14 races as well as Herva, de Ferran in 15 as well as Negri, Dolan only in 10 races, etc. Which races did they leave out and why?
3 Many drivers started only in the Silverstone GP race which supported the F1 GP. Do you know the total number of those drivers and who they were (I know Panchyrz, Kristensen,; I guess Müller but I don’t know more)? Kelvin Burt? Rene Wartmann?
4 Can you tell me who the National Class winners of the single races were?
5 De Ferran was penalized in round 1 as well as Albers in round 12, what were the reasons and which position did they finally get?
6 What qualifying system was used and was there some time a driver had to achieve in order to qualify?

Thank you.

Some Information for your questions from Formula 1 Register Fact Book F3 1989-91. If you want all the info on the British F3 season contact F1R at enquiries@formulaoneregister.com - although the book is out of print they may be able to sell you a copy.

ROBERTSON'S RACE RECORD WAS

Rd 5 Bowman RT35 crash

Rd 16 Bowman RT35 1st

2 Diniz started only in 14 races as well as Herva, de Ferran in 15 as well as Negri, Dolan only in 10 races, etc. Which races did they leave out and why?
Diniz missed the final 2 race, Rds 15 & 16
Herva missed the first two race Rds 1 & 2
Negri practised but did not start Rd 14
De Ferran missed Rd 2 in the change over from Reynard R&D to Edenbridge
Dolan Missed Rds 6, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16. I think he was a semi-amatuer so I guess the money ran out ?
3 Many drivers started only in the Silverstone GP race which supported the F1 GP. Do you know the total number of those drivers and who they were (I know Panchyrz, Kristensen,; I guess Müller but I don’t know more)? Kelvin Burt? Rene Wartmann?
The following started at the GP meeting and were not regulars (but they may have done one or two other racesc, I have not done a 100% check)
15 Klaus Panchryz VW Motorsport RT35
16 Tom Kristensen VW Motorsport RT35
23 Jorg Muller Bongers Reynard 913
Class B
28 Tony Davies RT33

Rd 3 Pekka Herva
Rd 4 Herva
Rd 5 Mears
Rd 6 Mears
Rd 7 Herva
Rd 8 Herva
Rd 9 Herva
Rd 10 Herva
Rd 11 Brody
Rd 12 Brody
Rd 13 Brody
Rd 14 Brody
Rd 15 Brody
Rd 16 Herva
Note - tables do not specify class winners so above is my deduction from entry list & results.
5 De Ferran was penalized in round 1 as well as Albers in round 12, what were the reasons and which position did they finally get?
Rd 1 Ferran 8th
Rd 12 Albers not shown a penalized clasified 4th Rydell was penalised and was 18th
6 What qualifying system was used and was there some time a driver had to achieve in order to qualify?
There is no evidence of non qualifiers. The spread of grid times is quite big eg Rd 3 20" between fastest & slowest.

Thank you.

I need some more information about the 1991 F3 season :

1) What were the starting numbers of Kelvin Burt, Paul Tickner, Brian Phillips, Peter Morgan, Tony Trevor, Dominic Chappell?

2) Mikke van Hool started the season in an old car before he got a new Reynard. Why wasn't he classified in the National class?

3) What happened to Reynard R&D after the 1st meeting?

4) What did the qualifying look like (1hour???, when???)

5) What did Urmas Pold do in 1990?

Thank you very much. :)

2) You could elect to run in Class A, also I think if you had a higher licence than a Int C (or maybe B) in the mid 80s you had to run in Class A - witness Rob Wilson in an RT3 in 85 or 86 (85 I think) running in Class A. That rule may still have applied in the early 90s.

3) Team stopped and driver(s) went to a team that became works supported (Edenbridge??) as I recall.

5) Perestroika related business no doubt!

He drove a Reynard in Swedish F3 championship. He was said to take 5th place overall but I don't know whether the minor league (Group B) or the major one (Group A) was meant.

'works' team only ran a couple races to promote new car, then "found" a team that would take on driver and car (yes, Edenbridge Racing - there was a Surtees connection, wasn't there?)

It's Amren, I believe, or actually Amrén? A few ¨ (umlauts) missing here and there in the other names, but perhaps our Swedish friends could be more precise... :)

Well, I took the table from the f3history site by Gerald Swan I don't know how they are properly pronounced.

I still need a of photo about Neto ,I mean on www.flickr.com there are hundreds of photos (485?) about the 1991 F3 series (British F3 and Monaco) but none of him ,okay he did not take part in many races but ...

By the way, can you tell me more about the careers of Pold, Kosankov, Dolan, Neto, Herva? (Which championships, final position, how many races, ...)
I only know that what's written on www.driverdb.com and for Neto what fines wrote in the Neto - thread (German F3, Opel Lotus Euroseries) - didn't he drive in Brazil as well.

Did Barrichello and Diniz who started in SudAm F3 also have a classification in Brazilian F3 in 1990? Did either of them drive a fastest lap in 1990 (F3)?

Thank you very much.

Diniz : round 3 : DNS : probably accident or failure short before the race?, qualified 11th
round 6 : DNF : accident, drove 14/ 20 laps, qualified 8th

Why didn't he start in the two final races, by the way? WSR got fed up with him crashing their cars?

Negri writes that he took part in an international f3 series consisting of 10 races a season (1993 - 1996).

Well, I just wanted to thank you very much for the plenty of help I received from you.

I've written race reports with the information I've got - those from here and that what I found out due to the British F3 review 1991. They deal mainly with Barrichello's performance and the B - Class isn't included at all - owed to the simple reason that not much is showed about them in the video.
I've posted them already on the barrichello forum http://barrichello.1...ewforum.php?f=1
I hope you enjoy reading them - they are not good but I have only limited time. If there are questions, corrections, suggestions for improvement, etc. please post them. It would be great to read some reactions to the texts.

Race Report (Rubens Barrichello) :

Venue of round 1 of the 1991 British F3 series was the reconstructed Silverstone circuit where F1 started on the GP Circuit while for the first race in F3 the shorter Club Circuit was used.
Having dominated preseason testing it was not a surprise that newcomer Barrichello took pole position at his first race weekend. Beside him stood the Swedish driver Rydell who re-entered British F3 in 1991 and behind him stood the Japanese Noda who started in his 2nd season in the series.
Starting from pole position meant that Barrichello would had a good chance to win in his first attempt. But when the lights changed to green this dream was already over because was he was too nervous and stalled on the grid. All cars went past Barrichello without problems - all with exception of the unfortunate Class B driver Alan Carruthers who hit the Brazilian’s right rear wheel eliminating both of them - no race for the two drivers and a disappointing debut in British F3 for the latter one whose starts would be a problem for him in nearly every single race of the season and cost him a lot of good results …
The rest of the race was quite unspectacular - the race order of lap 1 remained very much the same over the entire race ,which was dominated by Rydell who stayed in the lead from start to finish.
The order in lap 1 was : Rydell, Noda, Albers, Coulthard, de Ferran, Robertson, Diniz, Gene, Negri.
De Ferran managed to go past Coulthard but finally lost his 4th place after the race because he had made a jumpstart and was therefore penalized and out of the points in 8th position.
While Rydell won the race in the A Class and achieved fastest lap, Brody was winner of the B Class which those drivers started in who did not use a new chassis but an older one from 1990 or earlier.

Results after 25 laps :

1 Rickard Rydell TOM’s 031F TOM’s Toyota 23:44.69 min, 104.17 mph

Fastest Lap : Rydell, 0m56.09 (1 extra point)

Standings after Round 1 :

1) Rydell - 10; 2) Noda - 6; 3) Albers - 4; 4) Coulthard - 3;

Eduar Merhy Neto

Race Report (Rubens Barrichello) :

British F3 moved on to Thruxton Circuit near Andover in Hampshire for the 2nd outing of the year.
The first row of the grid was exactly the same as in round 1 and thus Barrichello was the man with the chances to win but for the second time in two races he had a horrible start. This time he got away but so slowly that he lost positions to Robertson, Rydell and Gene and was 4th after the first corner. Then, after that corner Coulthard and Noda passed him as well dropping him to 6th position.
At the beginning of lap 2 the order was: Gene, Robertson, Coulthard, Noda, Rydell, Barrichello, Albers.
From 6th position Barrichello began to fight his way back through the field. First of all Rydell was overtaken by him soon after before the young Brazilian moved past Noda on lap 4.
Afterwards Barrichello closed the small gap to Robertson and tried an overtaking manoeuvre but the Briton had the inside line and stayed ahead. But it was all in vain for Robertson because on the straight he became slower due to gearbox problems and had to let Barrichello and Rydell past …
Having passed Coulthard on lap 7 he was up in 2nd position at the beginning of lap 8 behind team mate Gene (who was 2 seconds ahead) and in front of Coulthard, Rydell, Noda and Robertson who completed the top 6.
In lap 13 Coulthard was down in 5th place before his race ended in the tyre wall after a knock from Diniz.
Towards the end of the race Barrichello closed the gap to team mate Gene and a fierce battle for victory began. Barrichello finally turned out to be the faster one of both and took the lead in lap 18 with only 2 laps to go.
It was an outstanding performance after another miserable race start and Barrichello achieved 10 points (9 for victory and 1 for the fastest lap) which gave him 2nd place in the current championship table.
Barrichello was happy about achievement and told the reporters after the race the following :
“The start … I really concentrated just to start … that was what I really wanted and I got it so I am really happy, after that the car was perfect and I tried, tried, tried. With just 4 laps to go I was just less than one second behind my team mate Jordi so I am very happy but the car was perfect really … I did my best but the car perfect.”

Results after 20 laps :

1 Rubens Barrichello Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda 23:54.64 min, 118.24 mph
2 Jordi Gene Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 0.71 sec.
3 Rickard Rydell TOM’s 031F TOM’s Toyota + 9.36 sec.
4 Hideki Noda Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 12.58 sec.
5 Steve Robertson Ralt RT35 Spiess - VW + 15.71 sec.
6 Marcel Albers Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 24.10 sec.

Fastest Lap : Barrichello 1:10.74 min. (1 extra point)

Standings after Round 2 :

1) Rydell - 14; 2) Barrichello - 10; 3) Noda - 9; 4) Gene - 6; 5) Albers - 5; 6) Robertson - 4; 7) Coulthard - 3; 8) Diniz - 1

Race Report (Rubens Barrichello) :

Round 3 of the 1991 season was hosted by Donington Park. For the third time of the year Rydell and Barrichello formed the 1st row of the grid but this time it was Rydell who took pole.
When the race started the track was still wet because of a shower of rain that had gone down over it earlier that day. Despite those conditions there wasn’t any mess at the beginning of the race. Rydell took the lead from pole position but lost it to Coulthard after the hairpin. Gene was third after the first corner in front of Barrichello who lost further positions during lap 1. At the beginning of lap 3 Coulthard was an impressive leader, Gene was second in front of Noda who had gained 6 positions, Rydell was down in 4th place, followed by the Brazilians Negri and Barrichello.
Soon after, Gene went wide and was overtaken by Noda and Rydell while Barrichello passed Negri at the inside of Copses. One lap later Gene went wide another time in the same corner and Barrichello was next to him on main straight and went past when they entered the first corner.
Then, Negri was out suffering a suspension failure in lap 12 and one lap later Barrichello overtook Rydell. But it was all in vain because just a few corners later Barrichello’s race was over as he went into the gravel and lost a certain 3rd place which would have become a 2nd place because Noda hit Carruthers while lapping him.
With all his closest rivals gone Coulthard had a superb lead over Rydell. But there was still a fight for the places behind - Neto, Gene, Albers and Robertson were within a few seconds. In the last lap there was an intense battle between Albers and Robertson - the latter was several times next to Albers but wasn’t able to go past until the very last corner where the Dutchman went over the kerbs, went wide and finally lost his 5th place to Robertson who got an additional point for driving the fastest lap of the race.
It was an impressive drive by Coulthard who won with an 13 second advantage over Rydell and went ahead of Barrichello in the championship into 2nd place behind Rydell while Barrichello was down in 3rd.

Results after 20 laps :

1 David Coulthard Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda 31:25.91 min, 95.44 mph
2 Rickard Rydell TOM’s 031F TOM’s Toyota + 13.72 sec.
3 Eduar Merhy Neto Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 30.98 sec.
4 Jordi Gene Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 31.72 sec.
5 Steve Robertson Ralt RT35 Spiess VW + 33.67 sec.
6 Marcel Albers Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 34.43 sec.

Fastest Lap : Robertson 1:32.22 min. (1 extra point)

Standings after Round 3 :

1) Rydell - 20; 2) Coulthard - 12; 3) Barrichello - 10; 4) Gene/ Noda - 9; 6) Robertson - 7; 7) Albers - 6; 3; 8) Neto - 4; 9) Diniz - 1

Race Report (Rubens Barrichello) :

When F3 went to Brands Hatch, Rydell took his second consecutive pole position of the season while Gene qualified 2nd and thus beat Barrichello ,who would start 5th behind Coulthard and Noda, for the first time.
The race wasn’t allowed to be broadcast meaning that not much about the race itself can be said.
There must have been a start collision which B Class driver Brody , Coulthard’s team mate Neto and West Surrey drivers Diniz and Gene were involved in. All of them were immediately out of the race.
During the race 3 further drivers had to retire (among them Dolan and van Hool) and only 14 drivers saw the chequered flag.
Coulthard had another great weekend and scored his second consecutive victory of the season but this time it was much closer. Rydell finished second not even a single second behind and Barrichello third less than two seconds behind the winner.
Robertson, de Ferran and Albers were over 12 seconds behind Coulthard and completed the top 6.
Rydell maintained his lead in the championship due to his rostrum position and the point for the fastest lap although Coulthard was closing in and now only 6 points adrift. Barrichello kept his third position but was now 13 points behind the championship leader.

Race report (Rubens Barrichello) :

F3 stayed in Brands Hatch because round 5 took place on its Indy circuit which was shorter and much faster than the GP circuit.
This race wasn't broadcast as well because Brands Hatch races weren't broadcast in 1991 in general.
Gil de Ferran secured his first win of the season and drove fstest lap as well - due to those 10 points he moved up to 4th place in the championship table but regarding his amount of points he was still far away from the top.
Owing to his 2nd place David Coulthard managed to reduce the the gap to points leader Rickard Rydell ,who finished in 6th spot, to a single point.
Bowman driver Negri took his first points and podium at the same time after a miserable start of the season including three mechanical failures in a row.
Rubens Barrichello became 4th which meant that he was now 11 points behind leader Rydell in 3rd place.
The Japanese driver Hideki Noda took 5th position and went past Gene in the championship with whom he had shared this position after round 4.
Winner of Class B was Robert Mears while Pekka Herva got the point for driving fastest lap. Mears enlarged his championship lead in Class B.
2nd was American Sandy Brody with a 9 points deficit to the Briton.

Race Report (Rubens Barrichello) :

Since championship leader Rydell was now 11 points ahead Barrichello and Coulthard was getting stronger and stronger in 2nd place, the Brazilian had to make efforts to close the gap.
Putting his Ralt - Mugen on pole at Saturday, he laid the foundations for a top result in the race but the question was whether he would manage to start properly.
And the answer was … no!!! He lost more and more ground in the course of the first lap and was finally down in 6th position. At the end of lap 1 Robertson lead the race in front of Coulthard, Gene, Neto and Diniz while Rydell’s race was already over due to a suspension problem.
Then, Diniz went past Neto and Barrichello did the same on the main straight a few hundred meters later, thus the three WSR - drivers were 3rd, 4th and 5th.
Barrichello overtook Diniz at the end of lap 5 and moved in to team - mate Gene. While doing so, he set a new F3 lap record (1:10.65 min.) which was the first ever F3 lap faster than 120 mph, showing that he was the fastest man on the track now. He passed Gene with ease and began to gain on rival Coulthard. Soon he was right behind the Scot and a intense battle for 2nd started …
1st attempt : Barrichello is much faster than Coulthard and passes the Scot on the inside line at Brookslands and is right in front of him when they enter Club ,the last chicane on the lap. Barrichello is in the outside and Coulthard breaks very late with blocking wheels, and moves past the Brazilian again in a spectacular manoeuvre.
2nd attempt : Barrichello is still the faster one of the two and makes a move on the Scot on the same spot but this time he is a car length in front of Coulthard when they enter Club.
Having passed Coulthard, Barrichello started to close the gap to Robertson ,who had been able to extend his lead to about two seconds during that battle. Although Robertson had problems with his tyres, he managed to stay ahead Barrichello and crossed the finish line with a tiny margin.
Gaining seven points and reducing the gap to the championship leaders ,who had swept positions, to 7 respectively 4 points, Barrichello’s chances to claim the title were now better again …

Results after 20 laps :

1 Steve Robertson Ralt RT35 Spiess VW 23:58.42 min,117.92 mph
2 Rubens Barrichello Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 0.17 sec.
3 David Coulthard Ralt RT35 Mugen - Honda + 6.38 sec.
