Does anyone out there know anything about this race? Can anyone point me to a results list for 1952 or 1953?

I ask because I am trying to research the date of an old Porsche poster printed, either 1952 or 1953, which commemorates (probably a class) victory in the 12 Hours of Heyres.

Thanks!

Assuming you're referring to the 12 Hours of Hyères:

1952:

1. Hertaux/Crespin (Jaguar)

2. Penon/Ugnon (DB)

3. Gignot/Touzot (DB)

1953:

1. Whitehead/Cole (Jaguar)

2. Roboly/Simone (Jaguar)

3. Picard (Ferrari)

4. Olivier/Veuillet (Porsche)

1100 - 1500 cc class: 1. Olivier/Veuillet (Porsche)

750 - 1100 cc class: 1. Hampel/Millinelli (Porsche)

No wonder I couldn't find anything! Thank you Tim, your help is very much appreciated.

Now for more questions... Are the two Porsche class results for 1953? Did Porsche have any class victories in 1952? Do you have source information?

Yes, the class results are from the '53 race - I got them from the Autosport report of the race. I don't have the relevant Autosport for the '52 race, so can't help with its class results - sorry.

June 7th 1953, 'Pagnibon', Pierre Boncompagn, raced the ex-Giuseppe Farina/Luigi Parenti Mille Miglia Superleggera 340 MM Touring Spyder in the Hyères 12 hour race. He set the fastest lap, but then lost control and crashed. Tragically, he died in the ensuing accident.

According to my records the 1952 version was the second Hyeres 12 Hours. Does anybody know anything about the first?

That Porsche-class-victory at Hyères Carl was asking for might have been the one of Richard von Frankenberg / Tim Berckheim in the 1100 cc-class 1952.

Snippets from Christophorus 3/1952, which contains a multi-page-report about the (that is: his) race from R. von Frankenberg.

There was also a third Porsche (4th. in 1100 cc-class), driven by Hämpel / Mähl from Germany.

Originally from The Autosport Directory 1955. :)

Happily, this is another 'lost' circuit that still appears to exist in its original form and could be 'investigated'.

That's fascinating. Having studied a Michelin map and Google Earth, I am pretty sure that the whole course still exists, though with the addition of roundabouts. The start/finish straight seems to be what is now called the Avenue de l'Aeroport (Toulon-Hyeres Airport is beside it) marked D97 on the map but D197 on Google Earth. Then the next straight goes along the D42, with the salt marshes on the left, before turning due north up the D599 for the third side of the triangle. Funny thing is I've driven on those roads a few times without realizing the history.

Yes, that's exactly right, P. If I have time, or someone else can do it, I'll post an aerial view of it as it is now.

However, before that, there was apparently in the 1930s a motorbike racing circuit in the centre of the town of Hyeres.

See Hyeres, as one might say:

Carl

According to the official programme for the 1953 event the race was titled " 2me Circuit International d'Endurance du Sud-Est - 12 Heures D'Hyeres", held on 7 Juin 1953.

This would imply that the 1952 race was the first edition. No programme available - only brief report in L'Equipe.

Of the Porsches in 1952, out of the 14 finishers, Picard/Bonnet in an 1500cc was 5th overall (2nd in class), von Frankenberg/Berckheim 6th and 1st in the 1100cc class, Bourelly/Brun 7th (3rd 1500 class), 12th Hampel/Mahle (4th 1100cc class).

There is some interesting stuff here, and a sad memorial to look for.

If I recall correctly there is reference to the 1953 race in Duncan Hamilton's 'Touch Wood', the incredible heat that caused Duncan to sit in the sea between stints behind the wheel of the C type and the story of the old lady crossing the road during the race.
