As a fan of the 50s I'm fascinated by the travel experiences of the smaller teams and privateers. I've read the HWM recollections of Alf Francis, and there is a book covering the Walker story, but does anyone know of any titles that might fit the bill.
I'm thinking of people like Bruce Halford and Horace Gould, who used to trek to many non-championship venues just for the starting-money. And what about Connaught?

Tales from the Toolbox by Michael Oliver has a chapter on getting there. If you don't have it already there's a chapter in Denis Jenkinson's A story of Formula 1 published in 1961.As a fan of the 50s I'm fascinated by the travel experiences of the smaller teams and privateers. Might I draw your attention to a book just published by Haynes, this month written by one of our members and a loyal supporter of the 3 times a year TNF Film shows in Hertfordshire.
Roger Smith from Oxford has written several motor sport books in his latest
Formula 1 all the races
He has meticulously researching the 858 championship races from 1950 to 2011 for his book, from then selected his personal Top 100. But that wasn’t enough for the Marketing/PR people who insisted on a Top 10 to stir up some controversial interest.
"I must say I found the process of filtering down from 100 to ten strangely therapeutic. Simultaneously it was highly challenging yet immensely enjoyable.
I would be fascinated to hear what others come up with as their greatest races as well as their thoughts on the ingredients that constitute the term ‘great’. However, as a TNF non-participant up to now, in such an august group of F1 sages it would be presumptuous of me to open my account on such a highfalutin topic. I have no objection to my Top 10 being used as the coconut shy".

Except for the race day weather, the Grand Prix Data Book by TNF-er David Hayhoe and David Holland has all this data plus full race order, retirements and grid positions. (Up to 2006)Top-six results with data on race distance, pole position, fastest lap, weather condition, race leaders, top point positions and number of starters and finishers ..and including the 11 Indy 500 races that counted for the championship during the 1950-1960 period. Since the book covers 858 races I can live with the basic results, as they are easily available from plenty of other sources.

The International Motor Racing Guide by Peter Higham has all the above occupying less than 1/5 of the book. (up to 2002)
So, apart from results for the last four years and a "Top ten races" feature does this new book add anything to those I already have?
Posted 14 March 2012 - 16:33
I couldn't find this on Amazon, but there were three used copies on AbeBooks, two in Germany and one in the US, it was published about 15 years ago. I imagine that all the text will be in German, which would rule it out for many.

I don't really give much for the top-10 or 100 races, but the marvel of this book are the short captions for each and every officially counting championship race held during the 1950-2011 period. It's relative easy to navigate and each season has short paragraphs detailing significant or peculiar happenings. Recommended for it's general usability, but for more information other sources must be sourced.

Volume 4 didn't sell very well and Mike bought the stock from Haynes to sell himself rather than see it remaindered. He was also doing other things - he set up his own publishing company (Forest Publishing of Liverton) specialising in books on Devon and wrote some articles on Devon and particularly Dartmoor history. I did hear he had some health problems too.My the way, does anyone know why Mike Lang stopped at 1984? is anybody planning to pick up the mantle?

On the subject of Le Mans, I've just noticed that Amazon now has a listing for Haynes's 1980s volume of the event's history, again written by Quentin Spurring and to be published in August of this year. The first three volumes have all been excellent, so I look forward to this one with much anticipation!

NEW: "Bettenhausen Story (The) - A Complete Illustrated History Of The World's First Family Of Auto Racing" By Carl Hungness. Advertised in Racing Cars magazine Vol. 1 No.2. To have been published in 1977.

I believe this was published in 1982 as Go! The Bettenhausen Story by Carl Hungness. ...I have a copy that Tony Jr. autographed for me. A nice addition to the library of any Indianapolis fan.
