As a fan of the 50s I'm fascinated by the travel experiences of the smaller teams and privateers. I've read the HWM recollections of Alf Francis, and there is a book covering the Walker story, but does anyone know of any titles that might fit the bill.

I'm thinking of people like Bruce Halford and Horace Gould, who used to trek to many non-championship venues just for the starting-money. And what about Connaught?

If there isn't a book, over to you Doug Nye.

If it ever gets published my book "Maserati Gauld Mine" has a full chapter on Bruce Halford and Horace Gould and their stories.

Tales from the Toolbox by Michael Oliver has a chapter on getting there. If you don't have it already there's a chapter in Denis Jenkinson's A story of Formula 1 published in 1961.

Might I draw your attention to a book just published by Haynes, this month written by one of our members and a loyal supporter of the 3 times a year TNF Film shows in Hertfordshire.

Roger Smith from Oxford has written several motor sport books in his latest
Formula 1 all the races
He has meticulously researching the 858 championship races from 1950 to 2011 for his book, from then selected his personal Top 100. But that wasn’t enough for the Marketing/PR people who insisted on a Top 10 to stir up some controversial interest.

"I must say I found the process of filtering down from 100 to ten strangely therapeutic. Simultaneously it was highly challenging yet immensely enjoyable.

I would be fascinated to hear what others come up with as their greatest races as well as their thoughts on the ingredients that constitute the term ‘great’. However, as a TNF non-participant up to now, in such an august group of F1 sages it would be presumptuous of me to open my account on such a highfalutin topic. I have no objection to my Top 10 being used as the coconut shy".

The BRM book is not at proof stage yet and the captions are still to be finalised.

Don't know anything about the Lotus book.

I don't really give much for the top-10 or 100 races, but the marvel of this book are the short captions for each and every officially counting championship race held during the 1950-2011 period. It's relative easy to navigate and each season has short paragraphs detailing significant or peculiar happenings. Recommended for it's general usability, but for more information other sources must be sourced.

Top-six results with data on race distance, pole position, fastest lap, weather condition, race leaders, top point positions and number of starters and finishers ..and including the 11 Indy 500 races that counted for the championship during the 1950-1960 period. Since the book covers 858 races I can live with the basic results, as they are easily available from plenty of other sources.

Except for the race day weather, the Grand Prix Data Book by TNF-er David Hayhoe and David Holland has all this data plus full race order, retirements and grid positions. (Up to 2006)

The International Motor Racing Guide by Peter Higham has all the above occupying less than 1/5 of the book. (up to 2002)

So, apart from results for the last four years and a "Top ten races" feature does this new book add anything to those I already have?

I agree, an excellent work, virtually error-free as far as I've been able to tell, and one of the most often referred to volumes on my shelves.

On a different topic, anyone know anything about this one, it doesn't seem to be listed on Amazon.

I couldn't find this on Amazon, but there were three used copies on AbeBooks, two in Germany and one in the US, it was published about 15 years ago. I imagine that all the text will be in German, which would rule it out for many.

Probably not, but can't tell as I'm not familiar with your alternative titles. The Roger Smith title does fit a gap in book shelf and does so for a reasonable £15 or so plus p&p.

It is GERMAN...
To my knowledge the first on the Avus Track. Has the history and the races , but it isn't very deep on information..Good photos..

The better one is:

Axel Kirchner : Die Avus, by Delius Klasing

http://www.amazon.de...s...2620&sr=1-4

In German and OP. But has lots of races and results and very good pictures..

Positive: has for the top 6 even the number of pit stops
has for each year a graph showing when the title decision was reached.
negative: 'artist-illustrations' of the cars (rather school-boyish)
slightly chaotic layout, too much colour used..

All in all: excellent for quick reference (and not so heavy as the 'black' books)

Best regards Michael

Cobras not being my thing, I've never seen them, but Rinsey Mills has done at least two well regarded books on the AC Cobra, probably why Shelby picked him for the biography.

Vitesse, as ever , you are right...there was an earlier edition from Kitschgin...

and some other more obscure books as.. Rennen, Reifen und Rekorde (races, tyres and records) seems to be the third edition from Kitschigin (1995)..

And a good one: Die Avus im Rückspiegel (...in the rearview mirror)..by Kubisch..that's more on the construction as a test track-- that's what the Avus was mainly in the beginnings..

The Roger Smith book 'All the Races' is a welcome addition to the library. As others have said you can get the results and in more detail elsewhere but the big advantage is the pithy and well written race descriptions, each about 150 words but enough to give the story of the race. The last time I saw something similar was the John Player Yearbooks in the 1970s and untiol Sundays' Australian GP this is bang upto date. I would have preferred more pictures and less drawings most of which appear on the cover pages of the Grand Prix data book but this is a remarkably portable tome and all in one value. I was happy to give it five stars on Amazon wherea I begrudged giving Grand Prix Miscellany one!

It also lists all of the post-war non-championship F1 race winners (acknowledging Sheldon) and doesnt fall into the myth of saying that F! started on May 13th 1950!

Ah, that's different then. The previous descriptions only mentioned the tabulated results. With mini reports it would nicely fill the gap from when Lang finishes.

My the way, does anyone know why Mike Lang stopped at 1984? is anybody planning to pick up the mantle?

Volume 4 didn't sell very well and Mike bought the stock from Haynes to sell himself rather than see it remaindered. He was also doing other things - he set up his own publishing company (Forest Publishing of Liverton) specialising in books on Devon and wrote some articles on Devon and particularly Dartmoor history. I did hear he had some health problems too.

Le Mans Racing magazine

Many of you know this excellent French magazine, which has always a chapter on Le Mans history too.

New for the latest issue is that they offer a (at the moment) free digital ENGLISH version on their website...

Maybe it's interesting...

On the subject of Le Mans, I've just noticed that Amazon now has a listing for Haynes's 1980s volume of the event's history, again written by Quentin Spurring and to be published in August of this year. The first three volumes have all been excellent, so I look forward to this one with much anticipation!

Thanks for the updates.

Here's my update on Inside Track: At Amelia Island someone in the business told me that "even Doug doesn't know when it's coming out."

NEW: "Bettenhausen Story (The) - A Complete Illustrated History Of The World's First Family Of Auto Racing" By Carl Hungness. Advertised in Racing Cars magazine Vol. 1 No.2. To have been published in 1977.

I believe this was published in 1982 as Go! The Bettenhausen Story by Carl Hungness. ...I have a copy that Tony Jr. autographed for me. A nice addition to the library of any Indianapolis fan.

Available through several sources, including here

Ah, thanks! I'll move it to the title change list.

I'm pretty sure there should have been a third volume of William Court's "Power and Glory" - think it was mentioned at the time.

There's also Gordon Kirby's history of Newman-Haas Racing, Mario's Team, which was to have been published last summer by Racemaker Press, but both Kirby's website and the publisher's are silent on a release date. I suppose the team's withdrawal from IndyCar could have led to a delay to add a brief coda, but again, no word.

I know he's well regarded by most, but I bought his Grand Prix Requiem and for me his writing style made it almost unreadable, though I don't doubt I'm in a minority. I've tried to get into it several times, but couldn't manage more than a few pages before giving up. I think he was something in the legal profession, I'd have titled it This Grand Prix Conveyance in squirly script.

Ferrari brochures 1945 - 1964 by Nathan Beehl. Link.

Ferrari Postcards by Nathan Beehl. Link.

An update:

Ferrari Brochures 1945 - 1964 was launched at Retromobile. The published title is "The Sales Drive from Maranello" and it covers the official Ferrari brochures from 1940 - 1964. I doubt it will have much appeal for Nostlalgia forum readers, as it is a very specialised subject. Although launched at Retromobile there were certain aspects that we weren't happy with, and we have gone to the great cost of reprinting some sections, so there is a delay in delivering copies, but they will be ready in about a month. The delay is a bit disappointing but we want the product and the content to be the best possible.
The postcard book is 95% ready. The published title will be "A Postcard from Maranello", and it is about the early official Ferrari b/w postcards. It features more than 200 postcards, many of which have not been published before. This will be a few months yet as continued research has brought new information to light, and this is being added.

Nathan

I believe that William Court is no longer with us, but apologies to he and his family if I am incorrect: I think it was always his intention to write a third volume.

His writing style is indeed individual. The use of classic verse to accompany each chapter suggests a classic education - I think he may have been a barrister, which might explain the florid style. I love it, but each to his/her own.

I enjoy Court as well, he's probably the best WRITER to cover motor sport, as opposed to historian pure.

As Professor Joad might have said, "It all depends how you define 'best'..." I'm sure we've had a thread on this subject in the past, but for me the winner for style and readability is Pete Lyons.
