Just saw this article http://www.autosport...t.php/id/111262 and wondered what everyone's attitude is to some of next year's cars looking like Anteaters?

Also, didn't F1 move away from the pointy nose design in the past because of the danger of them puncturing a safety cell?

Recently it has seemed after every rule change or even big innovation people have considered cars ugly. Maybe better to get used to it and not complain about it, because you'd get worse later on.

Hey, if I was sitting in the pits all day and Susie Wolff kept walking by I might look a bit like that too.

Yeah the smell of a dog turd you've just stepped in, is bad, but best not complain because tomorrow the smell will be worse when you tread in a dog turd that's also covered in burnt hair.

Maybe Red Bull will design theirs with a hydraulic arm so Vettel's car can do the finger too.

Christ, that is awful. F1 is just about the look as anything else, 2014 is going to be a hard sell if the cars do end up looking like this.

(And for the record, I like the DW12 so I do like unconventional cars)

What's the reason for the low nose tip? Is it safety or are they just trying to slow the cars down again?

Do we need any more evidence that F1 is run by fools.

The DW12 is a billion times more attractive than this. It looks like an F1 car if you asked someone in 1975 to design what F1 cars would look like 50 years in the future.

This is just awful, though.

No, it's to deflect attention away from the engine noise, crap tyres, and race strategies based on fuel economy.

That is the most extreme interpretation possible. I'd expect more of a mp4-22/23 style anteater nose.

Well, we had the 2004 Williams FW26 with the walrus nose. Now we'll have a field full of ant-eaters.

Looks like something that should be pixeled out during the broadcast. Hope the noses won't actually end up looking like this.

Now I want to see if the 2014 regs have made the back of the cars look like vaginas. It could lead to some interesting first-corner accidents. It might be a great way to get some testing for young drivers if 9 races after a crash, a GP2 car is born.

The F1 cars have been ugly for at least 20 years, this is just a continuation of a trend.

On a more serious note, this is the result of forcing teams to design into boxes. The cars will inevitably fill the boxes.

Umm, weren't they supposed to have meetings with designers of multiple teams after the platypus nose fiasco to ensure that any new regulation wouldn't result in monstrosities

I was happy when I heard that F1 cars was going back to low noses in 2014, because usually they are very nice (e.g. F2001, BrawnGP, etc.)...

But THAT would be worse than stepped noses...

I really hope we won't see that picture converted to real life.

That looks amazing. Almost as great as the 2012 stepped noses and the post-2008 narrow high wings on the back.

quick fix could be to mandate the front wing pillars to start onyl 2-3 cm behind the nose tip (or that they can only be 7-8 cm long), then we could have cars like these:

McLaren-MP4-19B-Mercedes_1.jpg

the nose profile itself is very similar (but smoothed out, rather than boxy like on the autosport pic), and still it looks much better (a beauty in my eyes)

or mandate that the nose can't get slimmer (excluding the nose tip's curve at the very end of it) than the 70% of the bulkhead... there must be a quick fix, not like they can't change the nose tip at this stage?

The FIA will have ratified the regs but really the technical working group should have worked this one out.

The article makes the point that there was a 'lack of agreement on ther need to do something' and I suggest that this was as likely to be some of the teams as it is the FIA.

Either way it's a terrible look, but I'm really much more bothered about how well the cars go than how they look.

I don't understand why some people are blaming the FIA for this.  Who reasonably saw this coming?  Its the first we are hearing about it and most people assumed 2014 was going to result in decent looking cars.

Seriously, everyone who wants to blame the rule makers, where were your concerns/complaints before?  The FIA is not run by design gurus with windtunnels and CFD supercomputers that can test out all the possible design interpretations.  They, and most everyone else, most likely did not see this coming.

The delta wing is horrible. If F1 looks like what autosport is suggesting we'll have a problem, but the delta wing is still way worse.

If you want cars to be pretty, follow the WEC. F1 is supposed to be about extreme prototypes, and the cars have often, thoroughout the history of the sport, been horrificly ugly. One doesn't mind if it's an ugly innovation such as Tyrell's extra front wheels or the Brabham fan. Even front and rear wings, when they were first introduced, weren't designed with aesthetics in mind and looked pretty horrible. Personally I don't mind as long as the rules aren't so narrow as to make all the cars look the same.

Yeah they'll probably still be better looking that the average car from the 1970s. That was a painful decade for the eyes.

So the FIA changed the regs to 'make the car better looking' and that will give us cars with noses who looks like a penis. Well, that's great.

It is the FIA’s problem, the nose rules from 2012 and 2014 can all be worked out by someone with just a little knowledge (i.e. me) reading through the rules.  The team’s raised both these issues through TWG with the FIA, with no agreement.  The mandatory nose tip section is tiny, being just 10% of the front bulkhead size, along with beign able to crash test the cars, the aerodynamicists were always going to run the nose tip to a minimum size.
