I didn't mind the 2012 RB8 stepped nose, because they put the vent/slot/whatever there, it looked odd at first, but it looked functional and thus it grew on me a bit. Same with the 2008 Sauber. Something like the Ferrari, with just a random step, looked stupid to me. This, well it doesn't look like it's there to suit any purpose other than meet an arbitrarily decided point in space dictated by the rules. Add to that the inbuilt oddness, and yeesh, it's not good.

Some 2014 F1 cars may fall from the ugly tree... [merged]

Dear F1 rulers, front bulkhead height should be limited, not tip of the nose.
The front bulkhead height is limited. They also limited nose tip height because that's the part that will hit the other car first in the sort of t-bone accidents this whole regulation was designed for. As the teams will fight for every centimeter of space under the nose and FIA can only push through regulation changes related to safety, it's likely not as simple as you think it is.
--
As for the matter at hand, it's still kinda pathetic. The teams must have known about this at least since the regulations were published, but we've heard nothing from then. Until now, a few months before the start of the 2014 season, when they voice their 'concerns', being aware it's already too late to change anything. "Lack of agreement on the need to do something", says the Autosport article. Yea, that kinda sums up the teams' involvement in the rulemaking process so far. What a mess.

What a brilliant idea. Next FIA has realized the rear wing DRS is too powerful and makes overtaking too easy, so they mandate a new front nosetip DRS. This would be the icing on the cake.

During the stepped nose saga Caterham? placed a toy platypus clinging to the nose of their car. I recall the caption 'mummy'. I wonder if the noses do turn out as illustrated, whether a mechanic somewhere will roll a condom over it? I foresee captions such as, 'ready for action' or perhaps, 'Don't worry about being rear-ended, I'm covered'.

Well I haven't heard the cars (and from the information given think they'll sound pretty good, though different). I haven't seen them racing either (and from the information given think the races might be quite interesting at times). Overall I'm reserving judgement on those aspects.
But these are the regulations that define the nose shape, and we're being shown what that might result in. What we've been shown is ugly (to my eyes and a lot of others it seems). Sure we're just speculating, but we know the teams are going for performance over aesthetics every time. We can make good judgements about what will bring performance. So I think these previews are fairly valid.

Yep. That tweet from AMuS's Tobias Gruner
#F1 Mercedes tech director Bob Bell was the first to warn FIA about ugly noses. So 2014 noses got the nickname "Bobs knob". No joke. :-)

I have seen one and have a fair idea what they will sound like.
Looks wise, the one i have seen is a little more extreme than the scarbs illustration.
Sound wise, they won't be a million miles away from the current IndyCar engines, which sound alright, just not what you'd associate with F1.
And yes, they already have a plethora of names: dicknose, ant-eater and my fave 'Bob's Bell'. Mr.Bell infact alerted Charlie Whiting (in May) to the possibility of these ludicrous looking noses (due to the glaring holes in the tech regs) and sweet diddly squat was done about it. When the wider motorsport world vomits into their bins after Melbourne, i expect some silly bodge of 'vanity panels' will be enforced.

So by now we know for sure (?) that at least two teams will have something like that, because Newey said the car will be ugly and we have a comment about Bob Bell from Mercedes. So these are two top teams. What about others?
Usually I am not bothered about it so early, but now I can say I can't wait for the January car launches...
I remember, when in testing in late November 2008 the first front and rear wing configurations of the next season were rolled out, the reaction was like "wtf is this". Now we have at least got a warning in advance...

feudal rulers, totalitarians and vulture capitalists would welcome citizens like that
anyway, when stepped nose prediction was made, most of us thought "yea that's what regs tell but no teams would do that, they would surely come up with clever solution". Then see what happened.
Hindsight but aero around the front is rather simple with current set of rule, ie guide more air towards the rear, so we actually shudve known that. But only those who have knowledge and facility and design the car can know what's really the best solution. At that time, most of us havent got clue how such gap on the nose would be advantageous. (~08 rule was another. under that rule, mechanical advantage of lower nose tip outweighed aero advantage of high nose, if i'm correct)
So we've learnt a lesson. Some tech journos are excellent, so if that's what they predict then I'm inclined to believe this time.

Clearly speculation is all good, but I think it would be good to refrain from writing off the sport, calling everybody involved stupid etc before we have actually seen the product.
Jackmancers Sauber, for instance, looks like a lot more realistic preview than Scarb's sketch.

To be honest, the stepped noses never really annoyed me. It looked a bit bulky, Ferrari's one was a bit extreme, but generally it seemed okayish. But this stuff now is a proper joke. I remember back in 2004 the Williams Walrus looked funny as well when it was unveiled.

Yeah, a lot of fuss was made about stepped noses but I look at the RB9 and find myself not offended.
I'd be curious to see if they did not try to use it as a vortex creator btw.

I remember a time where I used to tune in.. and the cars would drive as fast as they can.. they'd refuell and then drive as fast as they can. Every overtake was like gold because you knew there was no DRS or KERS..
And the cars looked cool.
2006 was my fave season and it feels like 20 years ago.
