Its a sad day for the F1 community to loose one of it's most genuine, open and honest characters.

Rest in Peace John - your Boy only went and did it!

Seano

Exactly how I feel too. Me and my Dad are massive Jenson fans and we were on the phone to each other practically the whole race for Brazil 2009... every time he'd make a dicey pass it was heart in mouth time and once he'd won the title it was just a sense of relief. I think for John those feelings must've been hundreds of times more intense.

Well, then either my calculating is terribly wrong, or his wikipedia age of birth is wrong; http://en.wikipedia....(racing_driver)

Wait, what? Wikipedia can be wrong??

Sad news for the family. Larger than life character, ace kart-engine builder back in the day, enjoyed the good-life (to excess some may argue). And why the hell not, hey?

RIP John.

Very sad. John Button was one of the few pit guests I always felt happy to see on TV.

Terribly sad news as 70 is hardly old.

I know it is small comfort but there can be few parents with more to be proud of than John Button both in his son and the way he carried himself.

Regards Mike

This is certainly sad news. John seemed like such a really great and down to earth guy and he always appeared to be behind Jenson 100%. Really sad to see him go. :(

Sad news. He always seemed a nice chap on TV.

I feel sorry for Jenson. He must be devastated. At least he knows he made his dad proud and gave him many happy moments over the last couple years.

RIP

That's shocking really  Do we know the reason e.g accident or heart attack since it seems so unexpected

My condolences to Button family.

RIP.

Don't think I've seen anyone say a word against him? One of the few in the paddock who everybody liked. Didn't he only miss a couple of races in Jenson's career?

I went to the 2011 European Grand Prix in Valencia and stalked the drivers into the car park. I said hi to them all while taking a pic hoping for a reply but only a few were kind enough. John was one of them, he said hi to me and put on a lovely smile like he knew me for ages. What a gentleman. :)

Courage, Jenson. The shock of your dad's sudden passing must be causing indescribable grief for you and your siblings. Hopefully, the warm embrace you've received from the F1 community and its fans is providing you some measure of comfort. Deepest sympathies.

Sad news, Jenson must be devastated. John seemed like a cool guy enjoying life and I admired their relationship where Jenson was a mate and didn't seem to care one bit if dad was hanging around all the time and having a drink when no one else seemed to etc.

I found Mario Andretti's condolence message particularly moving:  "Jenson-I think your dad would say his favorite thing in life was being dad to you @JensonButton. Thanks for sharing him with us. Im so sorry"

Gutted to hear about this.

Although I've never met him, I know somebody who's had dealings with him in the past and apparently he's a genuinely top bloke.

RIP John.

RIP.

He always seemed like he was on tv becuase he was in the pits, not that he was in the pits to be on tv

The fact that theres not been a bad word said in this thread says a lot about him I reckon.

I will always remember him so visibly joyful and full of life whether in photos, interviews or just hanging out around the paddock.

So sad to hear he has passed. I don't know the man himself, but the way Jenson carries himself speaks well of him.

He must have been a very special man indeed. I remember in 2009 how genuinely happy the Spanish TV broadcasting crew sounded because things were going the Buttons' way, and how affectionately they spoke about John Button and the rest of the "Button team".

He will be sorely missed by those of us who only got the occasional glimpse of him on TV, I can only imagine how hard it will be for those who actually knew him and enjoyed his company.

I've just read Jenson's tweets and my eyes are a touch moist I must admit. Poor guy is going to look lost without him this year.

I personally just couldn't imagine what I would share on Twitter in his situation. Hats off to him. It is positive to see so many involved in motorsports (including many, many ex-F1 drivers) sharing their messages and Jenson being able to read it all and acknowledging those.

Very sad. He seemed to be so happy and full of life. Jensons tweets earlier were very touching. F1 will be that little bit duller.

Saw this news earlier in the week but didn't get a chance to offer my condolences. He seemed like a really nice guy so I'm sure Jenson and close friends and family will have lots of happy memories to cherish... And those can't be taken away.
