I totally agree btw.  I wasn't being negative about Stroll.  A brand new car, brand new tyres, limited running, cold temps.  It's a tough way to start your F1 career.

Sounds like the normal start of a F1 career to me. Everything is new. You tread carefully, within your limits.

We won't be running again today. The #FW40 is back in the garage and we are assessing damage after the car went off track. #F1Testing #F1

I think they're fine to be honest.

It's Garry and he's got a job to do.

Should he not interview Ross Brown as well?

but it's for me like someone previously said, refreshing to see young driver struggle. Cause this was F1 before it become whatever this was. You just couldnt put 18 year old on the track and he would perform. That's why you saw Alonso driving Minardi's, and Kimi driving Sauber's. People were specially concerned, teams, etc when young drivers with no experience much even in lower series (Kimi for example) got opportunity to drive F1 car.

That's true. But find me someone who has crashed three times in two days in testing.
The primary need for the team here is to get data, data to put back into the simulators and use that data to improve both car and software. This is not a race weekend free practice where it is about maximicing the car you brought there. This is about maximizing the car that will be used weeks later

Thers's no excuse

He has crashed two times and spun off once. He also did a lot of running today and the damage didn't look that significant, so they will probably continue tomorrow rather than pack up and leave like they had to in 2007 when Nakajima and Rosberg crashed the car on days one and three. So they lost what today, 2 hours? That's not the end of the world. It's not looking good for Stroll and they will absolutely need to talk to him, but can we just dial the hyperbole back to the usual 5/10?

If we use Gary's 0.145s per lap of fuel (huge pinch of salt here!), this means Lewis could do a lap 3.5secs faster than the 1.22.2. A mid 1.18 should easily be on the cards on softs.

Hamilton's race sim from the laptimes AMuS posted:

The stints were soft - medium - red flag - medium (missing) - soft. Accodring to Autosport's commentary he was doing 1:26s and dipped into 1:25 at least once in the missing post-red-flag medium stint.

I don't know why, to get a super-license, you must not only have a certain amount of running, but also have finished in say the top five in the chosen categories below. Logical to me, and this could help if Liberty or whoever want to be able to say they have the 20 best drivers in the world. (Which they still wouldn't have, but it would atleast give the statement some more merit)

AMUS:

  • Stroll drove a 2 years old Williams
  • The Engine was a Merc PU (Hybrid), he got two new ones from Merc (they were built from scratch just for him...)
  • He had a test-team that consisted of 20 Williams employees, 5 Merc PU Mechanics
  • He had Pirelli Academy tyre (hard, medium, soft)
  • He drove in Silverstone, Red Bull-Ring, Monza, Barcelona, Abu Dhabi, Austin, Sotschi and maybe Shanghai.
  • Stroll sen. financed a new Simulator for Williams (only Stroll jun. is allowed to use it!)
  • The costs are around 70 - 80 Million Trump-Money

http://www.auto-moto...amm-778169.html

I just don't like this guy. There are far more talented guys out there. I would really like to see a Buemi, Vergne, Giovinazzi etc. in a Williams and not Stroll.

Might well be so. The car looks fine. It's either that, or a mechanical failure.

Ric's stint on mediums earlier today looks fairly competitive: 1:24.1, 1:24.0, 1:23.8, 1:23.8, 1:24.3, 1:24.5, 1:24.4, 1:23.9, 1:23.9, 1:24.3, 1:24.7, 1:24.6, 1:24.5.

At some point they all tend to do an empty tank test - its hardly a deliberate ploy to ruin other teams plans.

My own conclusions so far at the front of the field: If we assume Bottas and Hamilton run near identical programs across different days - for example yesterday Hamilton did low fuel Q run, Bottas race-sim, and today those roles were reversed - Bottas' times look good. Ferrari are coming back every single time Mercedes lower the bar

Well, at least they still feel the need to cover up the rear of the car even though competitors will likely have hundreds of photos already.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that as always Ferrari are sandbagging less than Merc.

What I mean is, historically Ferrari have tended to do their testing with less fuel than Merc, hence flattering their relative performance - and this winter is no different. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Merc are testing with 20kgs more fuel on average.

So his father has paid the team up to 115 million!  I find that hard to believe, as well as the clause forbidding other drivers from using the sim he supposedly purchased.
