Mike Wilson (Nield Road, Hayes) and Jim Ashpole (Westfield Way, Ruislip) spent £600 on their Lola Mark 1. Both worked at West Harrow Garage.

The Lola was converted to GT spec with full height windscreen with two windscreen wipers, targa-style top and extended rear wheel arches. The motor was a 1.1 Ford developing some 120 bhp. Car described as "once raced at the German Nurburgring,.."

58 sec at Brands Hatch Club

57 sec at Mallory Park

5 races 1969, 12 races 1970 - shared driving duties. Ashpole #169 at Silverstone August 1970. Car also pictured with #122.

Early 1971 they were considering purchasing a Chevron B8.

Chassis BR9: Edward Greenall >> Peter Boshier-Jones for 1961 Hill Climbs - at this time the car had dark green bodywork with light-coloured full-width diamond-shaped motif across the nose.
But who was the next owner? This car just disappears in the history books.

If anyone knows any more about Charles Saunders I would be very interested. I now own his TVR Grantura Climax which he raced before the Lola. He was an architect and I think edited the Sevenoaks & District MC Bulletin. I understand that he died a few years ago. It would be interest to know the chassis number of his Lola.

The Kentish Men and the Men of Kent are curiously reluctant upon the subject.

We now know that Charles Saunders owned the Lola at least from mid-1964 to the end of 1968.

But where it came from, and where it went to, remains a total mystery.

The prototype Lola Mk 1 from 1958 was registered 600 DKJ. This car shows up in 1962/1963 in the hands of Peter Borthwick (according to Rob Pennington he was from Birkenhead).

He won a race on the Aintree club circuit 8 September 1962. Also shows up setting a class record in 1 min 16 sec at Rhydymwyn Sprint, 13 October 1962. Described as Peco Lola-Climax. For photo at Rhydymwyn see Autosport, 26 October 1962. Also at Rhydymwyn, near Mold, 4th o/a at the Autumn event in 1963. Does anybody have a report of this event?

RGDS RLT

Bill Mackay raced a Lola Mk 1 in 1960, (thanks to Rob Pennington) said to be ex-Gammon - see Motor Sport, August 1960, Page 641.

See: https://charterhall....y.com/1960.html

So is this 600 DKJ?

We have Broadley/Gammon > Mackay > Borthwick?

Do we have any photos of Mackay in the Lola? Where was this car in 1961?

Also racing a Lola at Charterhall, Scotland (see above) was David Bertram:

https://www.racingsp...Bertram-GB.html

Who was David Bertram? Martin Krejci says BR12 then went to the USA - do we know where?

Goodwood, B.A.R.C., Saturday 23 August 1958

The only casualty of the afternoon

was Eric Broadley of Chelsfield, Kent.

But he was not seriously hurt,

although he made an unfortunate

debut on the circuit by spinning off

at the Madgwick Corner and somer-

saulting in a cloud of dust. Ambu-

lance men took him to the Royal West

Sussex Hospital for an X-ray.

His new home-made, swift-corner-

ing Lola-Climax, in which he once

lapped at the near-record time of

88.71 m.p.h., was however, badly

damaged.

Broadley lost a tooth and suffered

face wounds. Then it was learned

that the scrutineers had not passed

his car, anyway, because he did not

have a spare wheel.

BRIAN SMALLTHWAITE and Peter Borth-

wick, who raced a Lola and an

Elite entered by Peco last year, are no

longer associated with the concern. They

have both started a garage business at

Tozers Garage, Welsh Road, Queens-

berry, Flint, and would be pleased to

welcome any racing enthusiasts, especially

those interested in work being done on

Climax engines.

Oulton Park, Mid-Cheshire Motor Club, Saturday 14 July 1962

"First of the sports cars was R. J. Bloor's Lotus

23, a long way ahead of his placemen,

P. S. Borthwick (Lola) and R. Willoughby (LoIa).

In this event H. S. Milborrow

left the track and hit a tree, doing his

Milmor Mk. III a bit of no good, but

not injuring himself."

"Least said about the 1100 c.c. sports

car ten-lapper the better. Almost a minute,

or nearly a complete lap, separated the

first and sixth man home. Peter Boshier-

Jones (Lola-Climax) had one of the easiest

wins of his track career, and there must

have been mighty little for him to see in his

tyre-burning start from the grid."

There is a report in Autosport.  It says of that race: The next race was over 15 laps for Sports/Racing cars up to 1,100cc and produced a battle "Royale" between P Boshier-Jones (Lola) and J Mackay (Lotus) who passed and reposed till finally a spin at Shaws on the last lap by Mackay gave Jone certain victory.Third man home was J P Fergusson (Turner-Climax)'

Kyalami, Rand Spring Trophy Meeting, 10 October 1963

Final race of the day—run in pouring

rain—was the final event in the Trans-

vaal Sports Car championship. This was

another victory for Henri le Roux in his

immaculate 1,100 c.c. Lola-Climax, who

by so doing also won the provincial title,

with full points, from four wins.

ROGER HOUGHTON.

Do we know anything about the other races in this series?
