And here is where you've stumbled uncontrollably into a hard truth. My opinion is based on what Zak Brown and Alonso have said publicly. Brown has indicated to all who ask that Alonso remains tied to McLaren in some contractual manner, the terms of which we do not know, but one he seems pretty confident about. Alonso has expressed a desire to win the Indy 500 to complete his personal Triple Crown, but has not expressed any burning desire to race a full IndyCar season. I'm simply taking both men at their word.
Alonso competing in IndyCar for a full season, or seasons, is fans' dream, not his.
Yes, as I said, he has a contract right now that might keep him from racing in IndyCar for another team, and as we've both alluded, we don't know the terms. It could be for 10 years, which is unlikely, or it could end in a year, or two, or in 6 months, or who knows how long. One thing we do know is that it will end. Brown says Alonso is currently still tied to McLaren as an ambassador, that they're still talking to him about other McLaren projects, and that Alonso is at the top of their list of prospects to fill a full-time IndyCar seat. Given that neither of us knows the terms of the contract, are you still insisting that McLaren is his only IndyCar option long term?
I wouldn't mind seeing Alonso running a full IndyCar season or two. It could be cool, but while some people are hoping for it, it's not a dream of mine. I'm just interested to see what he does next & will follow whatever that is.
As for his 'burning desire' to run a full IndyCar season and what different parties are saying about that, I have no idea what level of desire he has to ever do that, on the range from 'none' to 'burning' ... but Alonso has on more than one occasion expressed interest in doing a full season at some point, saying it wouldn't be in 2019 or 2020 due to the huge commitment required. He has also said publicly that he has no interest in a partial season. Michael Andretti seems to think he wants to do it at some point, too. He said that when Alonso was presented with the option of a partial season or a full one with Andretti, Alonso rejected the idea of a partial season, saying that outside of just doing the 500, he'd only be interested in a full season. Brown said recently that he doubts Alonso wants to do a full season with McLaren in 2020.
