Yes, I'm a devotee of the Grand Prix Legends simulation, but I've been a devotee of Grand Prix racing since I was a teenager in the mid sixties.

Though it would be nice to own copies of racing magazines from the era, at $10 to $25 US each, that's tough.

What books can you folks recommend?

Where have you seen magazines for sale from the sixties?
As for books, they are also going to be rare and pricy, but Michael Keyser has just re -released his book, "The Speed Merchants".
It starts off in 1969, but it is still a good read. Other re-releases are; Innes Ireland's "All Arms and Elbows", Karl Lugvisgen's Jackie Stewart bio, Graham Gauld's Jim Clark bio is in it's third or fourth version. There are so many out there but you will have to dig deep in your wallet each time.
If you are interested in video, try "Nine Days in Summer", It's about the 1967 season with the Lotus Team, but every team is given film time. It's a great piece of work.

Garage sales have turned up some mid-sixties R & T, SCG and C & D for me in the past couple of years. But not many, certainly not collections. Just good reading.
Certainly don't replace the collections I had a few years ago....
Nigel Snowden's 'The Ultimate Excitement' isn't a bad picture book. It's mostly Australian stuff, with a bit of Tasman and some 1964-66 European stuff. He is a good photographer, after all.

Old auto magazines are often found on auction at eBay. A search for "road track" for example, just yesterday brought up about twenty copies of "Road and Track" and one collection. None of those were from '67, but one nice issue from '65 with a cover that I remembered: Carrol Shelby standing with a blue 427 Cobra, a blue and white GT-350, and an early blue and white GT-40.

I recently bought, from a dealer in the Chicago area, via ebay, a copy of the December 1967 R/T, which had Gurney's Spa winning Eagle on the cover, an image which I myself had cut out, way back when, and pasted to the top of a wooden box, which box and picture is still on my dresser holding spare keys. The Watkins Glen and Monza GP stories, by Henry Manney, I believe, are in that issue, with a piece on the Gurney-Weslake V-12 engine.

Nice to have it, even if it does live in a plastic bag most of the time, and even if I did drop $25 on the thing.

Sentimental value, indeed!

I'd like to know about that, too. I have most of the '67 races in R&T and Car and Driver, but a few are missing. I foolishly tossed my entire Sports Car Graphic collection, except for a handful of issues, when I moved to Switzerland in 1974. What a fool I was...

Chris, if you're a fan of the legendary Lotus 49, Michael Oliver's recently published "Lotus 49: The Story of a Legend" is a real treasure trove of historical detail and photographs, though not limited to 1967. It even gives the history, fate, and location of each 49 chassis that was built, and interesting insights into Clark vs Hill driving styles. It quotes Allan McCall, Lotus mechanic:

"...Graham could be just as fast on a given day as Jimmy, there's no doubt about that. I've got great admiration for Graham and his performance but some people can operate on a different plane and Jimmy was one of those...He carried so much more speed into, and through, a corner. Jimmy never used brakes really, he was just magic: he could damn near run a season on a set of brake-pads and Graham couldn't get through a weekend! He could go quicker, easier, than the other guys."

Yes, those old R&T's are great fun to read, I actually started collecting back issues some 27 years ago, when they were easily obtainable. I still have my newsstand purchased SCG "Get It While It's Last" issue.
But, what I really would like to get my hands on is, some '60's to '70's Autosports.

Oh, no! Gotta start checking ebay daily or better. I just missed picking up the whole 1967 run of R&T, for under $40, bound, mint condition, "like it was never opened". Guy mentioned the set in another auction, and had sold it by the time I got to him. Try, try again.

I can't seem to find reference to the book but it was actuall contained reprints of magazine articles similiar to the Brookland Book series on the Mille Miglia, etc. I last saw them at the Motor Book store in Cremorne, Australia 02 909 1144. Maybe one of our friends in Australia can help me out and give them a ring.

All Australian phone numbers are now eight digits. Sydney and Melbourne numbers have had a '9' inserted at the beginning, Brisbane a '3' and Adelaide an '8'. Perth had the STD code changed to '08' and then has a '9' added at the beginning of the number.

Here are a few off the top of my head:

I think I recall seeing a copy of the 1967 Autocourse for sale somewhere recently, but naturally forgot where... This was when they still put in the time for each lap of each race...and this was the second year of their Top 10..

Fast & Furious by Richard Garrett. A nice book about the season. A GPL fan would like this one.

Race Year by Eddie Guba. A large format book with lots of pictures and information.

Motor Racing Year 1967 by John Blundsden. The annual of Motor Racing magazine. Nice pictures and okay information.

Car and Driver Racing Annual. Surprisingly good and while not in depth as far as the results go, covers a bunch of categories. This was the second issue. Has some Really nice pictures.

Competition Year 1967. This was put out by Sports Car Graphic and I never saw another issue like it. It was really excelelnt since it gave complete results for a lot of the major series such as Trans-Am, etc. For F1, it only covered the WDC events, and recorded the mph for the grid times.

I might have a few others, but these spring to mind from those I still have in my collection.

DUH! Forgot the magazines! This was the year that Car and Driver essentially reduced its racing coverage to the minimum. Road & Track saw this as the last season that Henry Manney did most of the reports. The Italian race report was done by Rob Walker and that was the start of that. The R&T coverage was still excellent back then. The cover with the Eagle on it is still one of my favorites. Sports Car Graphic was the magazine that really was into the gritty stuff and did a super job on GP racing. Bernard Cahier was still writing for them at the time if I recall. Cahier was always a true Scribe and in the same group with DSJ and HNM for me.

I've just found this thread and I see that some people were asking where magazines from the 60s and 70s are available.

I recently purchased a stack of 60s and 70s Autosports from http://www.simonlewis.com/ His collection is particularly strong on copies of Motorsport (he has virtually got them all from the mid-sixties onwards), but I fear that I have probably nabbed all the best Autosports...;)

"Return To Power" by Michael Frostick, subtitled "the Grands Prix
of 1966 and 1967" published in 1968 by John Dickens and Co Ltd,
Northampton. And thank you Chris, opening my copy to the data on the publisher, I have found that it was signed "With best Wishes,
Denis Hulme". Never noticed it before! Too cool!

Six Days in August covers the 1967 German Grand Prix.

The blurb states: Michael Cooper-Evans was John Surtees' constant companion at the Nurburgring in 1967. Okay, I know some of you guys will throw up your hands in horror, but there is of course Lou Stanley's "Grand Prix 9", which covers 1967 - yes, he's sometimes annoying etc etc (insert your own derogatory adjectives here!!) but it does cover all the races in one volume!!

".... Nice 1st Edition copy of this title. Dust jacket and book in overall very good condition. However, a previous owner has neatly written out instructions with diagrams for making a home made telescope on the inside of the back cover. May add value for some buyers!....."

I've just been through mine too. Yes, excellent DSJ race reports but disappointingly little on telescopes.
