Moss certainly did the Monte for Sunbeam-Talbot, but if I remember something I read, he helped recruit Hawthorn and Collins for the Alpine.

There was a bit of a myth at one time that he was in the 1953 or 1954 6 car Alpine team ie. the Alpines, not Talbot 90s, on the French Alpine Rally (the name Coupe des Alpes for the event itself came later?) but myth it is - Moss and Collins were in the team.

Now I'm home with my references to hand:
1953 Alpine Rally team of Sunbeam Alpines
MKV 21 Stirling Moss / John Cutts
MKV 22 George Murray-Frame / John Pearman
MKV 23 Peter Collins / Ronnie Adams
MKV 24 John Fitch / Peter Miller
MKV 25 Sheila van Damm / Ann Hall
MKV 26 Leslie Johnson / David Humphrey
1954 team
MKV 21 Stirling Moss / John Cutts
MKV 22 George Murray-Frame / John Pearman
MKV 23 Peter Collins / Lewis Garrad
MKV 24 George Hartwell / Bill Deane
MKV 25 Sheila van Damm / Ann Hall
MKV 26 Peter Harper / Peter Miller
But no Mike Hawthorn
In My Cars, My Career Stirling Moss says that he competed in the Monte in 1951 and 1952 in a Sunbeam Talbot 90 and goes on to say: "In July 1952 I joined a strong Sunbeam-Talbot team in my first Alpine Rally, sharing the car with John Cutts. Mike Hawthorn joined us - after I had told him what a terrific way this was of earning fifty quid- and he was navigated by John Pearman." He confirms that Mike won a Coupe des Alpes while finishing 9th.
OT question: Was this the only event where Moss and Hawthorn were team mates?

Probably because of complaints of Jaguars with near open exhausts being thrashed around those roads many years earlier in the late 50s...

Been there, done that, got the gumboots!

I recall running a control on Frensham Ponds where the crew was issued with a (rather leaky) boat and a map reference where (if they could locate it) there was a floating ceiling tile with a code word to be read and recorded. All in the dark of course. I think JMH had a better idea when he went to the pub. . . .

MIKE HAWTHORN
Britain’s First World Motoring Racing Champion
A group of enthusiastic fans have decided to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of his tragic accident in January 1959.
We have arranged a Memorial Service in St Andrew's Parish Church,
Farnham, at 1.30pm Sunday 25th January 2009
This will be followed by a commemorative parade of Mike Hawthorn
related motor cars around Farnham Town Centre, commencing at 2.30pm
The Parade will then proceed along West Street to the cemetery for a private
wreath laying and blessing by the Rev. Andrew Tuck at the graveside.
Participants and Guests are invited to parade back through the town to
Swain & Jones in East Street...
Mike Hawthorn Memorial Service
Sunday 25th January 2009
· 12.30pm. Parade cars gather at Wagon Yard Car Park, Farnham in special area which will be taped off and have private security during Church service.
· 1.30pm. Memorial Service at St Andrew’s Parish Church.
· 2.20pm. Leave church and return to cars, ready to start parade.
· 2.35pm. Parade starts, leaving Wagon Yard, into Downing Street, right into The Borough, right at lights into South Street, then right into Union Street, and back into Downing Street, the parade will continue until 3.05pm ( hopefully 2/3 laps of the one way system) This will be decided by the lead Police Car on the day
· 3.05pm. Parade will turn left at the top of Downing Street, along West Street to the Cemetery. Each car in the parade will be allocated a Parking point at the Cemetery.
· 3.15pm. Wreath laying and Blessing at the grave side. 3.45pm Return to parade cars, and again with Police Escort, parade back through the town via West Street, The Borough, Bear Lane, Woolmead Road into East Street to Swain & Jones.
· The Cemeteries department of Farnham Town Council have granted permission for the wreath Laying and Blessing on the understanding that the numbers of people at the Cemetery is limited and that the people remain on the pathways.
For this reason we will not be advertising the wreath laying.
Please Note. No cars are allowed into the cemetery

I'm intending to come down from the West Midlands for this, meeting a couple of pals from Essex, can you recommend anywhere nice (and likely to be open) in or around Farnham, we could meet up for a "full english" prior to the event. ???
Do you have a snifter of the cars and personalities, aside from your good-self of course, that might be attending.
Cheers

Were Jags a common site on rallies in the late '50s?
Yes - or "not uncommon" is perhaps better. Smaller cars were prefered on UK navigational events on narrow, twisty roads (which included the RAC Rally before 60/61) but 3.4s etc were reasonably common on continental events like Monte Carlo, Tulip etc.

Apparently he was down to do the Safari in 1959 for Rootes (In a Hillman Husky!).
A relatively unknown named Paddy Hopkirk was recruited to take his place (still in the Hillman Husky team....). That Norman Garrad approached Hopkirk in the bar at the end of the 59 Monte indicates rather insensitively quick timing on his part...

Despite watching this forum daily for years I have just registered in the last few days and so this is my first post on this forum. I dont normally do forums and this is only the second one I am registered on. But when something comes up you can answer the time came to log in.
I have looked after the rally history for the Sunbeam Talbot Alpine Register for many years. . When I started I knew a few results but really had no idea where it would take me or what I would learn. The database has many International & National rallies that Talbot 10s, Sunbeam 80s, 90s, Alpine and Hartwell Specials took part in from 1936 - 1957.
The database has a staggering 1200 entries on 37 pages.
When Graham Robson put togetjher his book Rootes Maestros and when Anders Ditlev Clausager his book Sunbeam Talbot & Alpine in Details they both used and printed information from this database.
So to answer these questions about Mike Hawthorn - he did enter the 1952 Alpine Ralli in a Sunbeam Talbot Mk2A, reg KNX 555 finishing 9th overall, with Chips Chipperton on the maps. Two other Sunbeams finished 8th and 10th. They all took a Coupe des Alpes and also the Team Award, for the only team of three cars to finish.
Mike Hawthorn was going to do the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally but as he had just signed for Ferrari GP team he got the call to do some winter testing in South America so he never entered the Monte Carlo Rally.
If I can work out how to post direct from a Word document I can put up some photos links later.
Hope this helps

Well done for joining us. Does your database have details of the other Sunbeam-Talbot entries in 1952, as identified in post #16?
(Do you also know anything of a Paul Lee, Sunbeam Talbot, thought to be car #37 on the Alpine Rally in 1953?)

See the "RAC Rally History" thread - where two posters have just shown me how to copy and paste here from documents.
Whilst I had a fair idea of just how many 90s and Rapiers were around in rallying at the time, the sheer numbers appearing in the photos of the RAC 53 onwards Rupertit1 has linked to is impressively high.

Chris, Great stuff!
By way of a reward here is Paul Lee on the 1953 Alpine Rally in MWK 16:

I have quite a bit of background on Lee. Is he the same man who was a Rootes dealer at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire?
The car had been out on the Monte earlier in the year, #140, police crew of Skeggs, Teer:

MWK 16 is a works registered ST M2A
On the 1953 Monte driven by JR Skeggs, AE Teer, & T Cranfield no 140 29th overall started in Glasgow
On 1953 RAC driven by Sheila van Damm & Francois Clarke no 87 23rd overall started from Hastings and took the ladies prize
Your man Paul Lee also entered the 1954 Lyon Charbonnieres in MWK 16 with ? Easton on the maps start no 130 (ref in Autosport 2/4/54)
Possibly(cant confirm the initial) on the Scottish in 53, possibly the Brighton in 55, Morecombe in 52 and for definite on the Daily Express in 52

There is a fine photo in Works Team (Michael Frostick) of Hawthorn et al in front of their cars for the 1952 Rallye des Alpes; the number plate of the car that Hawthorn is leaning-on is KNX955, not KNX555 as you posted.
Leslie Johnson is in front of KUE90; the third car is LHP823.

Plannerpower - Correct the reg no is KNX 955 my one fingured typing caused that one. Database is correct and there is a photo of this car I put up earlier in this thread to confirm
Rupertlt1 - ref KNX 955 on the 1952 Daily Express that is George Murray-Frame & ? Rennie, no 314, they started from Glasgow
Ref Paul Lee I have nothing more for him on the 53 Scottish
But have these....
!952 D/Express PB Lee & ??, no 100 started, from Manchester
1955 Brighton P Lee & ?? in a Mk3 S/T reg no JNJ 808, no 47 - I have a photo of this car
1952 Morecambe P Lee & ?? in a Mk2 S/T, no 75, started from Manchester
1954 Lyon Carbonnieres P Lee & Easton Mk2A S/T reg, no MWK 16, no 130
I think if this gets further away from Mike Hawthorn we would need to start a new thread?

Happy to start a new thread if that is what folk want?
I think Paul Lee was inspired by the likes of Hawthorn and Moss. He was living in Canada, where he competed in a Sunbeam Talbot convertible in 1952, including racing at Edenvale, Ontario.
He may have been going back and forth across the Atlantic. There is much more to his story. Crashed a Jaguar on the Monte in 1955:

George Murray-Frame/John Pearson 1953 French Alpine Rally? Moss in MKV21 was No.501. In UK on way to the start - rain and stopped on left side of road?
Scottish Rally? Does the rally plate read "Royal Scottish Automobile Club"? Does not appear to be the RAC Rally.
A lesser Scottish event? Has the look of Scotland and of a private non works car. Despite initial assumption, it does not seem to be Sheila van Damm driving.

I have a pretty complete database of over 39 pages for all Sunbeam Talbots on National & International Rallies covering the period from the 1936 Talbot 10s, through the 80, 90s, Mk2, Mk2A, Mk3, Alpine and Dropheads up to 1959 the last Mk3 entry. All done for the Sunbeam Talbot Alpine Register car club.
I can give you entries/results/drivers/reg numbers/start point/awards etc..

No, as stated Arlette Ellison is the daughter of Arline Tozzi-Condivi. I suspect they are both in 'our' picture with Lorna Snow.
There is a connection to the Maserati and De Tomaso man. Also Cooper and Moto Guzzi.
