From what I saw over the years, a nicer person you will not meet. His September, 1987 Indy practice incident that left him in a coma certainly affected his racing career but not his character. As an example, in Phoenix, 1988 Roberto made his comeback from the head injuries with a great 2nd to Mario. During the course of the weekend (Saturday morning, I think) my friend and fellow worker, Rich Schroeder, was working the wall in center pit. He was hit in the head by a wheel from a car that wrecked coming out of turn four in one of the preliminary races. He had on a set of head phones but that did little to blunt the impact. If I remember correctly, Rich's skull was fractured and he was in a coma for close to two weeks. Rich was eventually returned to his Chicago area home for rehab. Roberto had all the drivers sign a helmet (rather ironic, no?) at Long Beach, and when Rich was able to take visitors during his recovery, Roberto was one of the first there to offer his encouragement and help and presented him with the helmet to let Rich know that all were with him and thinking of him during his recovery. Thankfully Rich did recover 100% from the episode, worked IndyCar races for close to 10) more years and is now retired in NW Indiana. Two good men that are thankfully still with us.

This car was entered by the Euromotorsport team rather than Fendi. The 3 laps completed was a typo; Phil Harms has it as 37.

Rob is right.
One more correction - Guerrero crashed heavily Euromotorsport`s primary Lola T9100 during final qualifying period and was forced to start the race in backup LolaT9000.

From Curt Cavin's Indy Star Blog yesterday. I thought it may be of interest.

Question: What's Roberto Guerrero been up to lately? (Sam, Lewis, Ind.)

Answer: Roberto is still living in California; I spoke with him during the holidays. His oldest son, Marco, is 23 and a mechanical engineer. They competed in the Baja 1000 together. His other son, Evan, is a sophomore at Lehigh (Pa.) University. But here's the interesting part: He's 6-4, 210 pounds and plays on the lacrosse team. Roberto just turned 50 if you can believe that.

I believe Roger Penske is a Lehigh graduate. (B2 comment on RP)

I couldn't agree more about Roberto being one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. Here is a shot that I took of him at Phoenix in 1987. You can see that he was posing for only me. I later got him to autograph it which he graciously did.

By all accounts, Roberto is a good guy and was a very good CART driver. RP attended Lehigh, but did not graduate.

I have a memory of Guerrero... Can't remember what year it was now, but it was sometime around 1990, A buddy and I attended the CART race at Elkhart Lake. After the race, we were driving back home to Indianapolis, in pretty heavy Interstate traffic south of Chicago trying to maneuver to the turn-off for I-65 south. It was dark by then. We were in a zippy Honda CRX and my buddy was driving pretty fast. As we we were barreling along, we noticed this "lumbering" motor home catching us up rapidly. My buddy, who was not shy about driving fast said "no way he's getting ahead of us"... Well, this motor home did. When it went past, we saw "Roberto Guerrero Racing" on the back. Somehow, Guerrero managed to get this motor home past a whole bunch of traffic and onto I-65 well ahead of us. A few miles later, we finally caught up. As we went past, I saw Guerrero driving and gave a wave. Guerrero acknowledged with a flash of the headlights.

Updraught (post #11), are you sure Roger Penske didn't graduate from Lehigh?

I could be mistaken, but iirc he did in '59. Same year Mark Donohue graduated from Brown.

Roberto's 1987 Indy car is now on display in Jack Thompson's collection which I was fortunate to get a chance to see the other week.

In the first picture, the car has no. 2, where in the other ones it's no. 4 ...
