Is there any reason why we don't have a Grand Prix in the snow? I certainly can't think of any. Just fit studded tyres to the cars, infrad-red head-up displays for the drivers, and off you go.

I trust Bernie will add this to his ever-growing list of wonderful new ideas...

As has been mentioned many times - if someone was to give Bernie enough money he would make it happen...

Certainly not in the UK! Anytime there is more than an inch of snow the whole country grinds to a halt! If ever a terrorist can come up with a massive snow making machine, he's onto a winner!

I have seen a fabulous video of serious motor racing, on ice and snow, in one of the Nordic countries. In real racing cars, too, circa 1920s.

There were proper legit F1 Grands Prix on ice lakes as late as the 50s. Have a shufti here for a start.

Over here in Estonia we are used to have ice races on lakes if there's enough ice. You can see very interesting cars in free class - a single-seater with VW Beetle body for example. Couple of years ago there was even a one-off direct competition between 1600cc single-seater and Group A Impreza. Both were on spikes and guess who was faster?

There's the Academy Award and there's as well the Golden Raspberry Award prizes.

I would like to be the first to nominate this OP for the Atlas Golden Raspberry Awards 2009 RC's Post of the Year!

Votes will be collected in December, thank you... ;)

Yes, he did:
You can see from the video how he struggles to keep the car under control. Natural ice is usually not even and spikes cut deep grooves into the ice. So if you let 20 F1 cars onto the ice for normal race distance then you probably end up with drowned cars. They simply pulverize the ice. Then you can have Swedish or Finnish or Norwegian GP near the polar circle where ice is at least one meter thick. Or maybe it's a way how to bring back Canadian GP?
