A twin-volume electronic publication in Adobe Acrobat format for a Windows PC. CD-Rom, print enabled.

These magnificent and rare books are now back in 'print' after 40 years with the kind permission of the author's family.

* Nearly 300 contemporary photographs, diagrams and drawings of engines, cars and running gear.
* Technical details with accounts and analysis of development and performance in 610 pages to delight the engineer, vehicle restoration and race enthusiast.
* Six major appendices chronicling races and the evolving car specifications.

The books have been scanned from the originals, proofed and electronically published in the UK by Engineering Information Services. The CD-ROM master documents have been further used to create traditional paper facsimile and this two-volume set is also available. http://www.enginfoserv.com/gpcar.htm

The author has graciously forwarded a copy for my review, which of course I'm anxious to do, but how do you review the Bible? Stay tuned.

DD,

You dawg, you! :)

Man, of all the books to drop out of the sky and bop me on the noggin, next to the T.A.S.O. Mathieson Grand Prix Motor Racing 1906-1914, this is probably it!

Piece of cake to review, just compare it to all the technical books on GP/F1 that have appeared since it was published... You might be surprised.

Personally, the CD-Rom looks like the route I would take on this puppy. I am putting on my lengthy list of things to get someday....

No, I haven't read it, but it sounds interesting. If I read all I wanted to read as well as what I should read along with what I have to read, a 72 hour 21 day week would do me just fine! :)

Don, I should be getting my copy of T.A.S.O. Mathieson Grand Prix Motor Racing 1906-1914 in the ol' mailbox any day now. But alas I had to pay dear for this one. ;-)

DD,

Where did you find it? I have looked -- admittedly not that hard since I paid a ton for it when I bought in the early 70's -- for it, but no luck at any of the obvious places.

I really didn't appreciate the book when I had it. Now I would really like to have a copy. Of course, now that you have paid a fortune they will do a 3rd edition....

I paid $180 for it and got it from A. David Gavitt, Bookseller.

Laurence Pomeroy is a name that I have not heard in many years. As a young man of 17, I spent some hard earned money on a big book titled the Grand Prix Car 1954/1966 by LJK Setright. In his foreward he said his task was to write the third volume to Pomeroy's The Grand Prix Car . I have not seen or read those first two volumes. But Mr. Setright's book opened my eyes to beauty as much as the Playboy mag we found in the closet. Now maybe I can read his greatest work. I have and have read The Evolution of the Racing CAR by Laurence Pomerory.

I would be interested to know of the production quality of the paper version. There v#can be no question of the quality of the writing. Many years ago I borrowed both from our local library. I now have Volume 1 (£190). £45 for the two sounds a real bargain. I bought Grand Prix racing 1906-14 when it was first published for £6 10s!. I can also recommend Pomeroy's Evolution of the Racing Car as mentioned by an earlier posting.

I paid $25 for the Mathieson book in 1971 or 1972 and that was a LOT of money back then for a book, especially to a graduate student to whom the money was enough to cover the groceries for a month! Needless to say, She Who Must Be Obeyed was not a Happy Camper.... The money for the book, BTW, was what I got for covering a few races for United Press. I considered changing my name to 'Stringer' since that was usually the credit I got...

In 1961 I bought a 10 years old Cooper MkV Norton racing car, selling my Renault 750 road car to do so and reverting to riding a bicycle for daily transport (borrowing cars to tow the racer to the circuits).
On the seat of the Cooper when I went to pick it up were the following books. It was to be years before I had a chance to read them and to appreciate the bonus I had received.
How lucky was I?
Ariel Motor Cycles A Practical Guide…from 1933 C W Waller
Motorcycle Engines Second Series Harry Louis Editor
Norton Motor Cycles A Practical Guide…from 1932 E M Franks
Racing Round the World Count Giovanni Lurani
The Grand Prix Car Volume 1 Laurence Pomeroy
The Grand Prix Car Volume 2 Laurence Pomeroy
The Racing Coopers Arthur Owen
Tuning for Speed Phil Irving
