If anyone knows where I can find a good pic of the Williams car with six wheels from 1982 preseason testing, please let me know.

Thanks

Williams FW08 being driven on test by Rosberg in 1982, the car was never raced.

You can see it better in this shot taken at the private Williams museum.

There were actually *two* Williams six-wheelers. The one above is the FW08 version. But I also remember having seen pictures of Carlos Reutemann testing a FW07 version (FW07C it was called, IIRC). Does someone have them?

Wasn't there an earlier thread covering all kinds of six-wheelers?

Cheers,

RD : The pic I found was called FW07C. I think, which is the one from the Williams museum also showed in desmo's pics. You can see the different bodywork quite clearly, especially the back part.

I have had an ISP that has been down for a day or two so this is my first chance to thank everyone for thier pictures. I really appericate it, I always loved six wheeled cars.

Marcel: still that engine cover looks much like that of the FW08. So it can't be a FW07C, which, as I now understand from David Hodges' A-Z book, was in fact a four-wheeled car and the third evolution of the FW07, used at the start of 1982 by Rosberg, Reutemann and Andretti (first three races).

Hodges makes a big mistake though, when he says the six-wheeler in his book (p.265) is the FW08, "which was shorter with this possible application (i.e. six wheels) in mind". You can appreciate the short wheelbase on the Daly Monaco '82 picture at 8W. But the car on the picture in Hodges' book is clearly a FW07! Look at the nose, the engine cover and the front (which does not feature the flat drop-down nose of the FW08). It has FW07 written all over it!

So there we are: two separate Williams six-wheelers. The FW07 version (FW07D?) is pictured is Hodges' book (I'll scan it tomorrow at work) while the FW08, which was specifically designed to meet the six-wheeler purpose, is seen on the pictures above, including yours.

Curiously, the technical drawing posted by desmo is one of the FW07. Again, the engine cover and the nose are your best clues. The ones on the drawing and those on the pictures just aren't the same.

BTW, the FW08 car also appeared at Goodwood three years ago and set a hill record at the hands of Jonathan Palmer. With its enormous traction it was made for the hill - Palmer's record stood for another year and was only beaten by Nick Heidfeld's MP4-13 last year (which is a rocketship compared to the FW08!).

Cheers,
R.D

I thought Alan Jones had done the original testing on the Williams 6 wheeler, which if it was an FW08 doesn't make sense. So there was an FW07 6 wheeler.

As promised, here the FW07 six-wheeler picture from David Hodges' A-Z of Formula Cars. Hodges' explanation I've scanned as well. As far as I can tell, Rosberg is at the wheel because of the Marlboro decal on his visor. But it could be Reutemann as well, since the 'blue' circle on top of the helmet fits Lole's helmet design. Can't remember Carlos being sponsored by Marlboro, though. Then again, the helmet is one from Bell, which Keke used. And it also has the blue ring around the visor, which Lole did not have. So Keke it is.

Marcel: you're right to go out and get yourself a copy of Hodges' excellent work of labour. It will certainly help you when going for the big points at 8W...

Mark Alan: can't tell by this picture if we're looking at post-season '81 or pre-season '82. The track looks like Paul Ricard, but then you'd expect a sunny test track during winter.

Hodges' claim that the picture was taken in October '82 is most certainly wrong. So it's probably October '81. But what was Rosberg doing in the car that early? Indeed you'd expect Jones or Reutemann to be in the car. It's all rather confusing...

Can someone accurately pinpoint the date of this picture?

Cheers,

The date I gave on the pic I posted was 1982. I don't know where I got this but I have just seen the same date given in the Guinness 'The Book Of The Car' p127, 1987 edition but one of the authers is David Hodges. Is this the same Hodges as you mentioned above, maybe he is mistaken I don't know. I'll keep looking.

JimE, RD : both your pics are the same (as if you dodn't notice that yet). So I presume that it's the same Hodges.

The book arrived btw, so I might have an easier time doing 8W in the future.

Ah Marcel,

But I'm one of the guys (along with Pascal) who didn't get to see JimE's picture... And I still don't. There is something weird going on with that link!

So thanks for noticing ;-)

And yes, of course it's the same David Hodges. Since both Jim and I use the same source, the doubt over whether the year is indeed 1982 hasn't disappeared. Hodges could still be wrong. And I think he is. (At least in claiming it's *October* 1982.)

Cheers,

Hard to tell with poor lighting in the photo, but that could be Reutemann. His helmet was very similar to Rosberg's, with a blue lid and yellow down the sides.

After many many months...

Lole has indeed been sponsored by Marlboro : http://www.forix.com...002_gstand_.jpg and http://retro2.vsni.net/81gp02.htm

But Rosberg's helmet still looks most likely :) http://retro2.vsni.net/82bra06.htm shows the helmet very much identical and later on in the 1982 season the Marlboro decal on Rosberg's helmet changed to the square logo above the center of the helmet, like we see them these days.

I'm still going with Rosberg in probably 1982 pre-season.
