That's funny, fines, you've just mentioned half of my TNF buddy list, which incidentally has gone unchanged since I don't know when...

Being a 'Nov 1999' guy, I still take a look at TNF every day and am still posting here, although I'm usually overwhelmed by the detailed knowledge some of the real experts have. It was simpler in the early days when there still so many 'easy' topics to discuss!

And of course I continue to regard TNF as a main source for the present post-game 8W site - it's not for nothing that they're both part of the autosport.com family. There is still so much good stuff here that needs a more prominent place on the Web rather than being buried in the TNF archives, so if you see something that is deserving of a good write-up, please let me know.

To continue on this tangent - yes, I wanted to add this story as well. Here's more for the German reader:

I love the Silbergurke expression, by the way... :rotfl:

One of the great points of the history of TNF is that it only took a few short months for it to grow from a couple of people asking pointed questions and trying to boost every single thread along... to a self-feeding morass of knowledge just waiting to get out.

HDonald used to post as Don Capps...

That gives him greater seniority. Dennis David deserves some recognition too.

Niel Allen bought it, unraced, from Jane when he wrecked his first 26R...

I'm not sure of the history of it from that point and would like to know. I think it was the one that Bob Beasley raced with the roof off and later went to Pat Hogan.

Not quite the illustrious history over a long period as the Doug Macarthur 26R, but still an evocative car in Australian racing... and the steppingstone for one of our greater drivers.

No... not Ray Lintott...

His car was the Paul Meyer Elan, which you'll recall wasn't a 26R. It went to Richard Stiegler after Ray had his little field day in it, then to Jimmy Davidson. I think Jimmy still has it.

A good group there in the begining. Capps certainly has had his moments of clarity and wisdom. Buford, as time goes on, adds to his unrelenting gadfly laced hyperbole while claiming to have done everything and been everywhere except the last supper. BTW, how did you like the tip ??

Ray Bell and the "downunder" crew have always been a treat.

Pedro 917 has been one of the most productive posters along with Barry Boor. Always fun.

Macca and the "Grand Prix" madness continues.

D David? Where have you gone ??

Oh ..... FORZA AMON

Hieronymus,

Quality, not quantity.

10,000 plus posts where the poster pontificates, attacks other posters or proclaims themselves Jesus, just
makes them pontificating, delusional blowhards not sages worthy of honor.

Buford,

Pardon me while I "Squeek" but..... you're still a blowhard and every now and again an amusing one.

Your knowledge or lack thereof is often provided with this "I am the keeper of the secrets of life" attitude.
It rattles empty like a wet fart in a wind storm. Your delusion, of course, is your own. Your trophies and great photos, being the material things that they are, will long be forgotten after your passing. As for driving a long way for a cause, I once drove day and night for a great tasting beer and when I got there, it was stale. Kinda like you.

Now that's NOSTAGLIA !

That thread for me and being completely selfish was just a lot of fun. In the end, it just became a case of one taking oneselves way too serious. In between all that and this, there were some great exchanges.

Chris himself got a real kick out of it.

I wish we could have some of those RVM pieces back again. It was the highlight of the weekly journal. When Atlas kicked off Iwas in college and I only had computer access, never mind interweb network access at college, so Thursday night was a late one.... studyin...reading Atlas journals.

What a fine place this is.

Did anyone ever hear the story about how the GP of Tripoli was fixed !!!!!!!!

Seriously, one name that's been missing so far from the early days is Barry Lake. He's not posting regularly any longer, but he used to be one of the "Big Three", or at least that's how it seemed to me when I joined here about a year after the "inauguration". Hans Etzrodt was the one who brought me here (and for that many thanks to the Pacific island of Hawaii!!!), and Dennis David was a most prominent poster from the very earliest days, but at the time that I joined the most ardent posters appeared to be Don Capps, Ray Bell and Barry Lake. I had the great privilege of meeting Barry when he came to Europe on a business trip a few years later, and I have the fondest of memories of that day.

Another big influence in the early days was 8W, and many TNF posters got their "start" by playing that wonderful (if time consuming!) game. Mattijs Diepraam, Félix Muelas and Leif Snellman were the originators, if I'm not mistaken, and they played a BIG part in the formation of TNF, too! Then there were Rainer Nyberg, Marc Ceulemans, Alessandro Silva, Darren Galpin, Tony Kaye... and many, many more - too many to list, in fact, as it is inevitable that some are going to be left out! :(

I am well into my 70s, hailing from England and now residing in Canada. From the age of 2 years or so, I have been told, I was fascinated by cars.

At the age of 18, I discovered DSJ, and kept with him until his view of the F1 scene was extinguished. In the intervening years, I managed to see quite a few British GPs, travelled twice across Canada to Gilles Villeneuve, and once, in 1992, to Spa, the last 3 from promptings from DSJ's writings.

Discovering TNF was like discovering a well.

And for one who feels that F1 took a downward step as far as spectating was concerned when it abandoned wire-spoked wheels, the delight in seeing those photos of older days was almost beyond measure, especially if they included the age of the Mercedes vs. Auto Union battles.

And so, I wish to echo all the thanks that have gone before, and sensing there may have been an omission to those who resurrected the history of the Auto Union GP cars, some additional thanks.

BTW, there is NO badge #3. a, b, c & d are the four 'lesser' badges and I began the regular sized ones with #5. And RTH owns that one.

While Don's version was interesting and may even be "correct" - if "correct" really has any meaning in the www age - he has again made the mistake of letting the facts get in the way of a good story. Buford's version will be the one that gets onto Wikipedia and will therefore become the "truth".

Its not even in the top 25 longest threads in paddock archive either.

I'm trying to find the 'top posters' on the TNF as requested earlier. So far:

Ray Bell 19,376
fines 9,034
Vitesse2 8,718
David McKinney 8,434

are the top four. Don Capps might break into that but has had a few user names and I can't remember them all. Buford has less than 2000 which surprised me!

1580 :D out of 4194

There are ways of finding out everything :D

and its not the most btw

pitblanc has 3853 in the first motorcycle thread (longest thread on atlas I believe at 15,101 posts)
pitblanc has 1739 in the second motorcycle thread (out of 6506)

Which is probably why I was wondering who the hell pitblanc was when the list of top posters came in because i've never ventured into either with my lack of interest in bikes!

1200 or so is next up btw, again from the bike thread.
