Well done, Don - terrific job.

No wonder you got full marks for the Millenium 8W 50s :) you must have had a quiet chuckle when you first saw it...

I'd like to endorse others congratulations of don's Vanwall story.
One question it doesn't answer, and I don't think I've seen anywhere else is why wasit so high? I know that the gearbox was underneath the drivers seat, but why was the gearbox placed there? It was more common in those days to put the gearbox in unit with the diff behind the back axle. Did the "Cooper" Vanwall have the same configuration?

That's one step short of "Full Bird"! Don I think it's time to bring back the draft. ;-)

No, Just having a little fun. LTC is a Lieutenant Colonel which is one step below a Colonel whose insignia is an eagle hence "full bird".

The details are all in 'The Design & Behaviour of the Racing Car' (Moss & Pomeroy), and seeing as my copy was in the housed that got knocked down I can't look it up. Does nobody have this great book?
A part of the underlying reason might have been budget constraints - RR military crankcase, head design lifted from Nortons, it was full of short cuts.

Ray, you're quite right. Just after I posed the question I looked it up in "Desigh and Bahaviour" The bulk of the valve gear and the long stroke meant that the engine itself was very tall. consequently there was nothing to be gained by reducing height further back.
However, the car that made one-off appearances in '59 and'60 had a Colotti transaxle, and did appear to be lower...

I last read the book about seven or eight years ago sitting on the can, but from memory they spoke of Costin working the body up to overcome the high frontal area with good streamlining and clean lines.
And a good job, too. I remember well at school how many of my mates had Dinky toy models - they were a classically good looking car.
