OK NF gang here is a good one.
This is going to be a stretch because the only clues I have are so thin that they are damn near invisible.....so please put your considerable and collective wisdom together and see if you can help.
When I was in college my roommate had a book on F-1 and Sportscar racing that was wonderful. I cannot remember the name to save my life, but I do remember that is was chock full of photos, with a fair amount of text. I remember one page having in large print this quote....... " ....we are all afraid.... I want to say it was Pedro Rodriguez, but I can't see him saying something like that.
I know it was not "The Speed Merchants" I have that book (love it!!) It also had the famous photo of Jim Clark...you know the B@W that is Soooooooo haunting. That one with the far away look of foreboding. Does anyone know which book this was??? Published in the late 60's early 70's also
Help!!!
PS Don or Dennis.... If you have that photo of Clark could you please post it on this thread. Thanks...

Damn, this is a good one.
Can you do any better on publication date?
What was the approximate size of the book? It's dimensions?
No clue to the author? Maybe Richard Daley, who wrote some books in the sixties?
Any other memories about the book?
Dave
P.S. Ok, how's this for an idea? Maybe Michael Keyser got the title for chapter two of The Speed Merchants (We are all afraid...) from the book you remember. (Or did he get it from one of his driver interviews?) Well, here's his website:
http://www.autosportsltd.com/
Maybe you could ask him...

The first edition of "The Speed Merchants" has a two-page photo to introduce chapter two. It say's "We are all afraid - The Men" or something like that. (There is a chapter on the teams, the men, the machines, the tracks, etc.) The photo is one of the Ferrari 312s, I think on the banking at Daytona. The paper stock on those pages is not normal, high quality glossy stock. It is some sort of yellowish, high texture paper stock. Hard to describe.
Without looking at the book, I'm 100% certain that there are no picutes of Jim Clark in there.
"At Speed" is a good guess, but I'm also 100% certain (without looking at the book again) that there are no portraits of Jim Clark.
My guess is that you're remembering the original version of Keyser's book, and remembering the Clark portrait from somewhere else and thinking it was from that book.
Let us know.
How do you like the new issue of "The Speed Merchants?"
Dave
