Hi!
A very brave man, I believe. Not only in the
Roger Williamson tragedy. But also a courageous racer. Won the public roads F3
race at Chimay/Belgium three times. And did
well at Rouen-les-Essarts in the wet 1974
F2 race.Did members of this board recall his
gritty F5000 drives in 1975/1976?

i remember him having one of the first non 5000 cc F5000 cars, cant remmber the make, but it had a Cosworth GA from the Cologne Capris in it i think.
Has Anyone seen the wreck of his F1 LEC at the Donnington collection?
It was the result of sticking throttles at Silverstone, and he had a full speed head on impact. If you look at the tub it is impossible to believe that some one came out alive.

you are right about Helen Stewart- glamorous or what?
I think Suzie Hunt did a fair bit to get motorsport in to the papers.
Bette Hill would have to be the outstanding drivers wife (and mum) of all time, simply for the time and enthusiasm she put in.

With the exception of the Williamson accident, where David Purley, an ex-Para, displayed real courage, his other claim to fame was being described as a "rabbit" by Lauda, after he (a mere backmarker) dared to obstruct Niki's majestic progress. Some things never change in F1 - a pity that Lauda had such a short memory back to when he was a struggling, self-financing backmarker himself. Purley simply adopted the rabbit as his symbol and painted one on his helmet...
Purley was one of the last of the real privateers, even building his own car. Whilst no World Champion in waiting, I never thought he disgraced himself...
