Reg Woodcock, possibly? Better known as a long-time TR3 racer, but I'm sure he also drove an E-Type.
Thanks for that Geoff.
Checking him in the forum, I see Andrew Kitson posted some info about him driving a 3.8 E-type in a Modsports race and having an almighty prang with possible fatalities involved. This was 1978 though, not 1972.
"Reg in his 3.8 Jaguar E-type was at the back of the field, picking off the slower Midgets and MGBs etc. at an alarming speed difference down the straight and seemed to notice the flags and slowing cars at the last moment.
I do not know the reason why, driver error or a mechanical problem, but Reg's car spun several times under heavy braking, from a point where the national circuit bridge crosses the straight now. There was a marshals post to the inside by the paddock entrance on the 'hard shoulder' so to speak, protected by a small length of armco. The marshals were slowing the field, waving arms etc. but a couple of them had strayed beyond the armco at the edge of the track. Alas Reg's car slammed into the armco and then into the marshals and disintegrated, bodies flew through the air as we watched on and there were fatalities, although I think Reg was unhurt although obviously distraught. This tragedy made the TV news and one of the saddest days I have spent at a race circuit. I was very pleased to see Reg racing again after this terrible tragedy."
I wonder if any photos/words exist that would reveal the registration number from that race?

From the prog, Reg Woodcock is listed in the programme as car no.1 in the 'Lew Wooster' Trophy Mod Sports race, Jaguar E-type 3781cc. 3rd race of the day. Would Ted at Ferret have photos of the car in practice (or on the grid) before this first lap shunt?
I recall John Gaisford was a regular snapper at Silverstone back in those days.

Reg's terrible accident was at the British Motor Racing Marshals Club 21st anniversary meeting, August 19th 1978. Such a tragedy that marshals lost their lives or were injured on this special day for them.

I was a marshal just up the straight from that accident and I knew one of the unfortunate marshals quite well.
John Gaisford was there as I remember he was quite upset as he was asked to photograph the scene for the authorities.
