Other 3D games work sweet.

Any clues?

GPL was written for 3DFX and Rendition video cards. Go to the Papyrus site, http://www.papy.com/ and get the Beta D3D Patch. It is an unsupported patch, but was written by a Papy employee in his spare time so he could run GPL on his home machine with a TNT card. If you have any further problems with the card, check with the folks on the GPLEA forum, http://www.kotr.de/org/ they are a pretty helpful bunch.

I'm still trodding along old Mosport with my Ferrari. Taken it down to 1.25,22 and I'm giving John Surtees a run for the money his mother gave him. The game has begun crashing every now and then. Bloody annoying. Still no wheel and pedals.

Ah Monza, what a brilliant track that is, i do most of my online racing there because the slipstreaming is fantastic and you can really go for it. I'm down to 1:29.42 but i've been on a couple of monster laps that would have crucified that but either blew the engine or span at parabolica  Bloody Cosworth engines :) I usualy lose the engine at sometime in the race when I drive the Lotus.

Buzzin: try to have the last gear one "up" so that you don't get that much revs down the straights... and.. (this you know) allways lift while changing gears so it doesn't go to the revlimit at every gearchange..;) I usually don't last long enough to make the engine let go  :)

Swerve and myself watched your last film and thought it was great. Now what was the title called again,

WOLBO: MY CAT CAN PROBABLY DRIVE FASTER THAN ME

but I think the sequel was better,

WOLBO: MY GOD, MY CAT DID DRIVE FASTER THAN ME

mahelgel, i'll give the gears a tweak and try that... yeah I know about lifting but you spotted it, i'm too lazy to do it :) I can get away with it in any car but the Lotus (damn!) also I don't do it cos it drops the revs and then the barsteward behind me kills me on the next straight ;)

Does anyone here like Greger Huttu's setups?? I hate them all except Monaco, which is absolutely brilliant. As for the others, I don't know how he does it :)

Do you find his setups are to tail happy. If so move the brake balance more forward like to say 55 or 57. Try that. To be honest, I am not a fan but I have a great Zandy setup.

With minor tweaks in brake balance and steering ratio, I like Greger's original setups a lot, especially for the Ferrari and Eagle. His new "GH2" setups, which he supposedly developed using an FF wheel, are way too loose for me.

Linus27, yeah way too tail-happy! There's no feel at all, he must have a very unusual driving style..! I'll try changing the brake balance though and see how that is. I prefer mild understeer myself, and then I can induce slides rather than have them happen by themselves all the time

Don, I have the GH2 ones and I don't like them either ;) but I haven't got a FF wheel so maybe thats the problem.

Buzzin: you don't need to lift-off completely when changing (at least not in short races) but you have to lifte some... I even blow the ferrari when i'm not lifting ;)

mahelgel, I played a few races on VROC last night and experimented with lifing off while shifting, its a knack which I haven't quite got yet cos you've got to lift at exactly the right moment..! Still managed to blow a few engines :) And one of those was a Ferrari while I was leading in a Pro race :(

Monza PB for me in the Ferrari with Alison Hine setup is 1.30:82

I`ve done countless laps there but can`t get below the holy grail 1.30

Question for anybody who has managed a 1.28/1.29 ---- what was the one thing you did that saved the most time on your sub 1.30 lap ?

PS If anybody says practice I may have to hit them with a big stick :p

I was stuck at 1:31.xx for the longest time. I really couldn't imagine going faster. I thought 1:30's were impossible, much less 1:29's.

I believe I was using Alison's setup "Ali Lot Monza Nov.lo1" with no modifications. I know I risk getting hit with a big stick but the day it happened I was practicing, working on turning fast consistent laps as opposed to hot laps. I think I hit that point that some people in other sports call "The Zone." I was completely relaxed, no pressure from a race or to turn a PB lap. My concentration level was extremely high, probably due to being relaxed. Now some people feel Ali's setups push a bit too much but i actually like that because I can use trail braking to balance the car on entry for a good run out of the corner. I wasn't watching the times from the little pit guy but I knew I was getting in some pretty good laps. When I stopped and checked the times I found that not only had I turned 1:30's but some 1:29's also.

So far I haven't hit 1:28's but I know it will come some day. One thing I do, I don't know if this is common or not, is to find a setup that feels right, ie the car is nicely balanced and easy to drive. I tend to stick with that setup and learn to drive the car as such.

Mark Donahue used to have a saying about car setup, "If it looks right, it is right." Meaning if it looks fast it probably is, if it looks goofy it's probably slow. I use a similar approach to car setup in GPL. If it feels right, it is right. If I have to fight a car to get it around the track I know it's never going to be fast. If the car is well mannered and predictable, even if it's not that fast to begin with, I know I can learn to drive it fast. Or at least as fast as I can drive it. ;)

Argos

I can understand what you say about THE ZONE. I am crap at hotlapping and qualifying. Not my area at all and so I tend to go fastest in a race. This I feel is because I am not actually trying to get a fastest lap and I am more relaxed and so my driving is less tense and then the times start to come.

Irvine's Love Child

For a start, try getting a good setup for the Eagle and try that. Also, if you are doing 1.30.xx in the Ferrari then you should be able to get a 1.29.xx in the Lotus with no problem. Send me a replay of you fastest lap and I will see where I can help you go faster. Send to

linus27@ntlworld.com

Hi Linus,

I just done another PB 1.30:53 , Ferrari same setup.

Unfortunately I don`t have either of the 1.30 replays saved.
When I do my next one I`ll post it to you :)

I changed my driving style big time. Instead of trying to brake down into a corner discretely ( ie off the gas on to the brake ) I decided to keep plenty of accelerator depressed as I was braking. This had an amazing effect of keeping the car very stable. The entrance to the first Lesmo and Parabolica were much steadier.

I did about 10 laps and was doing all low 1.31`s and a couple of 1.30`s so it`s consistent.

I had tried the accelerator with braking trick before but just realised today I hadn`t been keeping the accelerator down far enough. It will take some time to readjust to this technique but I`m going to stick with it. I tried the `Ring too and took some corners at speeds I`d never taken them before :D

My new found speed makes the sim a lot more fun too !!

As for the nickname ILC .... like father like son in ALL respects

I think you have just cracked trail braking. Nice one. Personally I still right foot brake. It may be slower but not for me as I am a very late braker and try to carry as much speed through the corner as possible. Not sure what my technique is really but it works for me. I was surprised to find that Rubens still right foot brakes where as most F1 drivers left foot brake.

One technique which helped get me into the 29's at Monza was to take the Lesmos and Parabolica in 3rd gear instead of downshifting to 2nd. This feels slower initially, but it's much easier to get the power down on exit and the tail of the car doesn't slide all over the place. This works especially well at the start of longer races with the car on cold tires and full fuel.

Just did a 1.30.01 at monza... the damn lotus just dont wanna go under 1.30.... ;) Also improved my Monaco time (although not a good time anyway), which is no at 1.30.04

Still working on that GPL Rank.. down to 59.0899 which means that my Nurnburg time needs an upgrade (currently at 9.04.09).

ILC, i know exactly what you mean when you say you've completely changed your style, i've also been practicing using the accelerator under braking too (also using the brake while accelerating gives a kind of traction control). however, as it feels so alien i'm just not currently doing it in races, when it goes wrong i'm either too slow or the car ends up pointing the wrong eway :)

Don, thanks for the tip. I've tried it some in the F3 cars to stabilize the back end since those cars tend to be a bit tail happy. I never thought of trying it with the F1's but the reasoning makes sense. Thanks.

Hi,

My current GPL Rank is 38.04

Watkins Glen Lotus 01:06.59
Silverstone Lotus 01:30.32
Monaco Lotus 01:31.85
Zandvoort Lotus 01:28.36
Monza Lotus 01:29.24
Rouen Lotus 02:01.43
Mexico Lotus 01:51.68
Spa-Francorchamps Lotus 03:25.12
Kyalami Lotus 01:21.65
Mosport Lotus 01:24.19
Nürburgring Lotus 08:47.83

My GPL Ranking has been stuck at 38.04 for quite some time. Mainly because I haven't been race the normal tracks lately. Too busy racing the new tracks like Le Mans, Roubling, Wet Mosport, Snowitude, and Bremgarten.

I can see your point about ILC but what is silly about argos? Argos is the name of the first dog to be mentioned in literature. Argos (swift foot) was most likely a greyhound and was Odysseus' dog in Homer's "The Odyssey" written about 800 B.C. It's hard to imagine not having an appreciation for Greek literature, after all it's filled with sex, violence and all kinds of depravity. Even so I still don't see what's silly about the name argos.

There is one thing that i don't like with the GPL rank though... the fact that "the ring" drags my rank way down ;) With a time of 9.04.09 i'm way of pace. Never really got the hang of the ring...

Ahem... been away from this Forum for a very long time.

Matt,
has Linus27 ever been a member of the league? and does the 27 number relate to the great Gilles?

I think we should be talking about Mexico as it's the next race. I personaly suck there. I plan on turning a few laps there tonight in preparation.

Monza
The secret to a 1:29 lap there is Curve Grande and the lesmos. I can't get Parabolica right, but still do mid 1:29's. With Parabolica the time should drop by one second. I recommend to check the Ferrari set ups and replays at the Lights Out Racing site which I don't have the URL for at work. The Ferrari set up is sweet and allows you to really push it through those corners!

Here are my times which give me a GPLRank of -10.6 or so. My problem is that I can't force myself to drive tracks like Mexico and The Ring because I hate them they drive my rank right down :(

Watkins Glen - Lotus - 01:05.87
Silverstone - Lotus - 01:28.82
Monaco - Lotus - 01:26.43
Zandvoort - Eagle - 01:25.97
Monza - Lotus - 01:27.03
Rouen - Lotus - 01:57.88
Mexico - Lotus - 01:49.54
Spa - Lotus - 03:18.71
Kyalami - Lotus - 01:20.57
Mosport - Lotus - 01:21.64
Nürburgring - Lotus - 08:27.13

As a hint for those seeking to crack 1.30 at Monza the key is the exit speed out of Lesmos 2 *NOT* breaking late for Parabolica. Once I realised this the 28's and occasional 27's began to flow like wine.

Bernd: great time on Mosport. I was quite happy with my 1.25.xx :) Never manage the "hairpin". Always seems to brake too late (and run wide) or get to much wheelspin out of it (sometimes so much wheelspinn that i have to ease too much up, and correct the steering).

So ILC, ?Have you tried the Monza set up?
Bernd, is right that speed out of Lesmo 2 (and Parabolica) is more importent than late braking. I've got Lesmo 2 right and I can do mid 1:29's, now if I could only get Parabolica right...

Matt,
My ISP had problems last night. It wasn't the site.
How are you looking for Mexico and Osring? and why am I asking you this here?!?

mahelgel, just seen your times and they're pretty similar to mine, except you are a lot faster at Mexico and I win at Monza :) I got a 1:29.38 in a race on VROC last night which i'm quite proud of... theres definitely a 1:28 in there somewhere (I hope)

The Ring is soooo frustrating, I really really hate the 9 minute outlap before you can get down to business. There's no feeling in any computer game as depressing as completing the outlap at the Nurburgring with no problems and then crashing at T1 :)
