It seems like people got the notion of the precontract the other way around. When words of a 'precontract' came out, people thought that Ferrari had the option of Kimi being taken into the team only if Fernando leaves. It turns out that the option holder was Kimi himself, contingent on Lotus sorting themselves out!

I thought it didn't make sense if Kimi signed a precontract where he could be left in the lurch - it indeed didn't turn out to be that way, he was holding most of the cards all along.

Hey that wasnt all that bad.. Not even a mention of Kimi, but surely he will make up for it sooner or later. :)

Oh! he did mention him in the previous tweets, but I will not post them here or the thread will turn again into a Kimi vs Alonso thread and I don't think the poor mods would enjoy it :p

No surprise really, he´s been already saying best thing would be to keep Massa in the past. Even as close as last weekend.

Yep, that seems to be the main stream opinion in the main-stream Spanish F1 journos (with the usual exceptions, of course: Puigdemont, etc)

I suspect people may be misunderstanding the point of the bunny pic here, I don't think it has anything to do with them feeling shafted by Kimi, just that it hurts a bit to see him go (ie look at the expression on the rabbit's face...)

My take was they were facetiously implying Kimi is going to get buggered at Ferrari.

You can't do that, now I'm so curious that I'm considering searching for it eventhough I don't understand any Spanish.

Would you please be so kind to post it? ;)

Erm, twitter just crashed down (no joke)

Really, I can't post it here because what he does is "statistics" where he compares Kimi vs Massa and Alonso vs Massa since 2012 (you can guess with which intention) and it will really go off-topic. If you are really interested, his twitter-accoount is @alobatof1

Just send me a PM if you need a quick translation :)

Ex-Ferrari chief says Kimi Raikkonen not the right man for F1 team

Kimi Raikkonen is not the right man for Ferrari, reckons its former sporting director Cesare Fiorio.

With Ferrari having elected to rehire the Finn for next season as Felipe Massa's replacement, Fiorio thinks that the outfit may have been better off taking a youngster with more potential for the future.

Non-news item. This guy was fired from Ferrari more than two decades ago. An irrelevant old fart with an opinion based on what? Media stereotypes of Kimi he got from the Sunday papers he reads on his front porch while yelling at the kids on his lawn?

To be honest, I feel that Kimi owes something to Ferrari and hope that he will be able to repay in his next stint.

He has never been and will never be my first choice of a favourite driver but Ferrari (all other things being equal) will be stronger with him than with Massa and also, there would be one top driver less driving for the competitors' teams.

Therefore, it's well done Ferrari but if the car is not good next year, it would be a great shame on Ferrari and a waste of two top talents.

In fact, I'm horrified by the prospect of some another team having an absolutely dominant car in 2014. It would be an absolute anti-climax against our present expectations because watching Fernando, Kimi, Lewis or Vettel fighting for 10th place would be simply bad for everyone involved.

Yes but he failed big time in 2008 and 2007 was....well, better not talk about that season at all.

Kimi owes Ferrari as much as Ferrari owes Kimi - that is, either nothing at all, or a lot, depending on where you're standing. Both parties were equally responsible for their successes and failures.

Amazing news, this will be very interesting to watch.

And funny after so many staked their lives on Ferrari never having 2 champions /no. 1 drivers at the same time..

CNN: The Cult of Kimi Raikkonen - F1's Coolest Driver
12 September 2013

Kimi Raikkonen has always been box office, even before he re-signed for Formula One’s most iconic team, Ferrari.

The 2007 world champion is a fan favorite and arguably the most popular driver on the grid.

Wherever F1 goes, from Monza to Melbourne, Shanghai to Singapore, there are always enthusiastic, banner-waving Raikkonen fans in the stands and, in the virtual realm of social media, he is the subject of plenty of ardent chatter.

But just what is it about the laid back Finn that has sparked this global cult of Kimi?

Earlier this year, I asked him just that – and it was the first time I can recall seeing the driver they call "Iceman" a little bit flustered.

Raikkonen may not set out to be a pleaser but it is ironically because of that attitude that he can look forward to 2014 not only as a Ferrari driver, but as perhaps the most popular racer on the grid.

According to MTV3 and Oskari Saari (via Pekka Franck) Kimi and Luca had to settle things behind the scenes to the level of apologies and acceptances -otherwise there would not have been common future fore them together.

We wil hear more later when public appearances follow in the annual skiing event or something like that.

Remember this quote by CNN! It is a very important one that the paddock needs to remember and clearly important one for Shell.

actually, stefano domenicalli has already stressed this point, i.e the impact of Raikkonen's popularity with the young generation and corporate sponsors ..

Honestly, I think the combination of Fernando’s expressive and passionate latin character and the cool style, to call it that, of someone like Kimi, seems to appeal to many, including the youngsters and our partners are also in agreement with this.

i'm still amazed that a fizzy drinks company (i.e RB) whose main reason for investing heavily into motorsport, xtreme sports and all sorts of other crazy events is attracting the imagination of youth and making a brand around them, decided not to take kimi onboard. puzzling indeed

Yes, best let it go, seeing as both MS and the team have admitted that they screwed up in 2008.

Taking him back now confirms that admission.

Sky asked Kimi specifically about his relationship with LdM

"I've never had a problem with him. For sure I've had arguments with many people and not just with him but with some other team bosses also. There's always a lot of rumours about different things I've done. But people write and they have no idea what's going on inside the team."

And on Lotus

"It's so far been very nice, great people to work with and obviously we want to improve things. Since we've started working together, it's been going well - probably what they expected for how the team has improved from the past years,But obviously it's never enough and we want to do well. But they've been very good for me and hopefully I've been good for them."

"Two years for probably both of them, actually. I think [no more] over that. What they do after that, obviously, is pick Seb up off the back of Red Bull and they keep moving from there.

"It's a very short-term, aggressive statement from Ferrari to put the team at the front."

Because its Ferrari.

Red bull is great, but they dont have the history, the aura Ferrari has by being in the motorsport for so long.

Actually Massa owes them the 2008 WDC. Ferrari made changes to the car that suited Massa and reverted to Kimi's preference when it was too late. Kimi owes them absolutely nothing, Todt backed him in 2007 and he delivered the title. As for the 2008 title better pin the blame on Schumacher sticking his nose in car development and Massa's mistakes at Malaysia and Japan.

Break out the 2008 excuse book!

Both drivers failed Ferrari that year.  The car was a beast.

Actually Massa can dig out that book if he wants to. Some team failures costed him the title, he was far from perfect -just as Lewis- but he did enough to transform that "beast" into a title.

Think what Sean is saying is that it shouldn't have been that close with that car. One of the Ferrari drivers should have walked it.

Räikkönen was on course of doing that midway through the season.. But then came Canada, Magny-Cours, Silverstone (3 potential wins down the drain), retirement in Barcelona when Massa passed him in Championship, and of course Spa. After that, there was nothing much left to do.

Think what Sean is saying is that it shouldn't have been that close with that car. One of the Ferrari drivers should have walked it.

Well, then he´s wrong. It would always have been close, especially with such a rainy season playing into the hands of McLaren. Ferrari was indeed superior even like that, but "superior" like McLaren was in 2007, not like RB was in 2011. It´s not realistic to say he should have been 15 points ahead and team blunders shouldn´t have affected the result anyway.

Massa would have done the job without team blunders. I don´t think his initial remark saying drivers failed to Ferrari in 2008 is fair. Kimi might have done that, but in Felipe´s case it was more like the team letting him down.
