Coincidence with the names, or Kretschi also played jazz?

Thanks!!!!!!! I had no idea about it, and saw yesterday on Facebook, so I presumed he had died later. He was interviewed for a Portuguese classic cars magazine

I'm not sure if wives really count on this list but I think Arza Parsons (Carter) is quite notable in a way - http://www.findagrav...&GRid=163926768
Wife of two Indianapolis 500 drivers, mother of three Indianapolis drivers. She died back in May, just before the 2016 Indianapolis 500.

Dave Bignold of Gartrac fame passed away a year ago today, he would have been 80 last April.
A true gentleman and immensely skilled engineer and fabricator with a common sense based understanding of how to build a successful competition car.
This he put to good use with engineers like Len Bailey, Allan Wilkinson and similarly skilled rally engineer at Boreham, Mick Jones.
His philosophy always provided bullet proof components, especially for rallying where it's essential, in addition to be easy to work on at the roadside against the clock.
Examples of this is Gartrac's pedal boxes, axles, sump guards and all other chassis components for the works Mk1/2 Ford Escorts. (Much copied but never improved on....)
In addition to Boreham he did work for and with Alan Mann, JWA, Mo Gomm, Willams, Tyrrell and many, many more.
In 1970 he formed Gartrac with good friend and colleague Bill Payne, more on their history in the link below.
http://www.gartrac.c...ny/timeline.htm
It is such an honour to have known him and benefited on so many occasions of his knowledge and help from him and his good colleagues.
RIP

For record he died on Thursday night. I'm amazed there's not more mention on Autosport or the forums on Foubs' passing. Ex editor of Autosport, one of the founders of the McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year and so much more. Only 63 years old too.
Andy Hallbery has now written an obituary for Autosport: http://www.autosport...bister-19532016

Aussie John Reaburn, who raced a Ford GT40 in the European sports car series in 1968, had died. Some photos of John, and the yellow GT40, have previously appeared (long ago) in the Personal Photos thread. I gather he started his racing career in the ubiquitous Humpy Holden. He was also a contributor to Racing Car News while in the UK.

Name spelled Reaburn, not Raeburn. I got that from the man himself when he emailed some years ago me asking after copies of the colour pics of him, his team and the GT40 from 1968 which I'd posted on the forum. They've evaporated from that thread now. I have sent a new set of copies which will be printed out and shown at his funeral.
Mention of the Cobra: one of the slides in the set young Dave Sullivan took was of a Cobra on a trailer, which was using a Borgward Station Wagon as a tow car. I assumed it was just something Dave spotted somewhere and grabbed a photo, but it may have been the actual Cobra Reaburn raced. I'll put it up here shortly.

The Cobra: Actually 2 pics of the same car, I have just discovered.

On 26 October 2016 the BRDC website published an obituary of Denis Barthel. Since then I found his full name (Denis Reginald Barthel), his likely birthdate (13 November 1924), the place he lived (West Wickham, Kent) but no exact date of his death. There are hints that he died as early as July.
On the other hand I would like to know the birthdate of recently departed Derek McMahon. I only have a year (1940) but nothing specific.
Can anybody help with more info?

Earle Canavan died back in February, I've just discovered. Wasn't made public until July by the looks of it.
Although considering his surname, it makes sense, I never knew he was from Northern Ireland. Not sure why it won't let me add a link in here, but full obituary is on legacy.com

I hadn't heard about Tom Wiechmann's passing. He raced FF (1975 SCCA champ), SV, and Formula Atlantic. Here is a link:
http://www.legacy.co...x?pid=180379871
From Riley and Val Hopkins:
"Too many people checking out. Tom was a great guy, who helped me on my 25F. One of his greatest feats, was talking a CHP near Sears Point out of giving him a ticket for 140 in his new Turbo Carrera after a day of testing at the track in a FF. He'll be remembered, and missed."
From Marty Loft:
"...Tom was a great competitor and a true gentleman."

Recently I found out, much much later after the event, Earle Canavan died on the 9th February. On the same day, Tom Threlfall, VSCC stalwart and Formula Junior driver, died, but again I've only just found out now.
My PC (or TNF?) will very annoyingily not let me link to anything but it's on the VSCC.co.uk website.

A fabulous centenarian passes away and not even The Roaring Season takes notice.
EDIT:
I have to apologize because in fact his passing was mentioned on The Roaring Season forum under the A Dampener on the Festive Season banner.

Marcus Pye's Autosport column last week included a tribute to Doug Lawrence. I was surprised that his death escaped mention on TNF.

Engine builder Steve Knott dies in tragic accident
Monday 23rd January, 2017
Steve Knott has been killed in a tragic accident
Legendary engine builder and engineer Steve Knott, who had an influence on a generation of young Australian racers, has died after a bulldozer accident on his NSW property.
In a career spanning 50 years, Knott built and prepared competition engines for national and international circuit, off-road, boat and speedway teams through his Competition Engineering business.
Knott, 65, was involved in the sport directly out of high school preparing John Leffler’s Formula Ford and within two years they had won the 1973 national Formula Ford title.
In 1988 Knott met Sydney’s Greg “Pee Wee” Siddle at the Adelaide Grand Prix and within a short amount of time they created a partnership to become the Van Dieman Formula Ford importers for Australia.
Van Diemans had won the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 1987 and 1988 and would go on to win the title for nine more consecutive years starting with Mark Larkham’s win in 1989.
Larkham’s win was followed by Russell Ingall, Troy Dunstan, Cameron McConville, Craig Lowndes, Steve Richards, Jason Bright, David Besnard and Garth Tander.
All those drivers, with the exception of Dunstan who had his own engine building business, went on to become professional full-time drivers.
Knott also had tremendous influence on the careers of many on the technical side of the sport including ex-Formula 1 engineering ace Sam Michael, who worked under Knott on Larkham’s Formula Brabham/Holden program.
“He was never one for the publicity or getting his head in the newspaper. He just loved motorsport and getting the most of the cars and the people driving them and working on them.
“His contribution to Australian motorsport is tremendously under-estimated.
“Steve and (wife) Virginia were a tremendous team on the business side of things for so many years.”
Knott also prepared and developed engines for Frank Gardner, Kevin Bartlett, Allan Grice and Charlie O’Brien and also spent two years preparing the Jagermeister Opel Omega for the DTM championship in Germany.
Knott played a role in the early career of Australian Formula One ace and 2015 WEC champion Mark Webber, preparing the engine for his first ever Formula Ford racer at Amaroo Park in Sydney in 1994.
He also worked with Siddle on the development of the Volkswagen team for the Procar Australian GT Production car championship in 2003.
More recently Knott was also involved in supplying race engines for the Asian market.
Knott passed away on his property at Maroota, 50km north-west of Sydney, and is survived by his wife Virginia.
Speedcafe.com offers is condolences to Virgina and all of Knott’s friends and family.
Very sad news RIP Steven Knott.

While it's been far too long since I posted any updates to this site and I have a backlog from the Western U.S. oval racing world, I must mention that word has reached me of the passing of Larry Damitz at age 87. I do not have an exact date or any obituary link. Damitz raced Bay Area and Northern California short tracks beginning in 1950 and never stopped. He won the Antioch Speedway limited late model championship last year at age 87 ! Starting out at his home track, Vallejo Speedway, he raced the pre-WWII hardtops at the track into the mid-1970s, before he moved on to the dirt late model open competition scene. From the late 1970s through 1980s, he raced late models up and down California. While he raced on asphalt on occasion, he was mainly a dirt track racer. He spent the later years of his 66 years of racing primarily at Merced and Antioch Speedways, eventually dropping down to the limited late model division, where he won several more track championships in his 70s and 80s ! Local track stats being what they are, I have absolutely no idea how many feature races he won or even how many track championships or major open competition late model wins he had over the course of his remarkable career.

I hear Gordon Woolley has passed away.
From his obituary:
Gordon Harlan Woolley, 94, went home to glory on Wednesday, February 1, 2017.
Gordon was born on October 21, 1922 in Waco, Texas, to Gordon Sr. and Irene Woolley. After a modest childhood, including a short stint in the U. S. Navy, Gordon returned home where he worked at an auto garage on Elm Avenue. It was at this auto garage where he met the love of his life, LaNora Ann Corley, and they were married in 1947.
After working on other race cars, Gordon decided to try his hand at auto racing. In 1946, Gordon began his long, extensive auto racing career at the old Suicide Bowl in Waco. After early successes, Gordon took his skills and became one of the original "Outlaw" race car drivers, driving for anyone who called him. Among many of the famous car owners that Gordon drove for were Chet Wilson (owner and builder of the #25 Offy Killer), Hector Honore (Black Deuce), Sam Weinberger, Jerry Gilbert and Herman Bellmire.
Gordon gained a number of nicknames on racetracks across the United States. He was often called "Rim Rider" for his ability to run at the top of the race track. He always said, "That's where the cushion is and I knew how to handle my car. All the other guys were running at the bottom of the track and that's where all the wrecks happen."
The pinnacle of his racing career came in 1963 when he won the IMCA Championship. Still, after all the miles and victories, there is not an accurate count of all the races and trophies he's won. Over the years, he often gave trophies away to his fans across the United States. Today, the trophies are scattered at some of the 6 Halls of Fame he was inducted into and in giving to his numerous fans.
Gordon was preceded in death by Ann, his wife of 65 years in 2012. He is survived by his daughter Pamela Woolley of Waco; daughter Patricia Yamada and her husband, Earl of Castle Rock, CO; daughter, Lisa Matthews and her husband, Jason of Waco; 5 grandsons, 3 granddaughters,4 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Wesley Woods Health and Rehabilitation, Royal Manor Nursing Home and Senior Care of Hewitt for the exceptional care they provided Gordon over the last few years. Senior Care of Hewitt went above and beyond to ensure that Gordon was given the care and attention he needed.
His son-in-law dedicated a Facebook page to his memory.

Adelaide Motorsport Park [formerly Speedway City] promoter and long time Super Sedan competitor Bill Miller [left] died last night. He has been fighting cancer and complications for about 18 months. Last I saw of him was in December at a swap meet at the Speedway and he looked a bit skinny but he was otherwise seemingly well. 12 months ago he said he was going for chemo Fri afternoon, then for lunch then back to work!
Bill had been running the family business Blair Athol Auto Parts for several years though his mother Joan and father Stan were still around, just not as much, As was his wife Twiggy [nickname]
His brother Stephen and Bill had taken over the speedway mid last year with Tony Parkinson as manager.
Bill started speedway in Midgets and then into Super Sedans where he was very competitive with a smaller budget than many.He did the national series up to mid 15. You could never miss him in the Blair Athol pink cars!
The family has been speedway people for decades, Stan was a long time RDA president and mother Joan raced sedans, Mini, Triumph 2500 and then a V8 XD Falcon then into a Pontiac. Up to a few years ago. Brother Stephen also raced with success but retired into the finance industry in Hong Kong. Since the 70s the Blair Athol pink has been on a lot of cars that the family sponsored.
Back in 2012 Bill made national headlines with a firey exit from a national round in Qld. Very spectacular though little damage from an oil fire. He raced the car the following week.
