What is that?

Doesn't look legal? Or is it just for measurements? What is that?

Very interesting. The technical regulations call for aero neutral suspension components, so I wonder how they've circumvented that aspect.

People starting to wonder if this car is legal. Excellent signs....
Posted 29 January 2014 - 08:51
Whatever it is, it looks like it is being used to justify the diffuser.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 08:51
They formed the suspension arms into wing / diffuser shapes that have the cooling exits blown over them to seal. I thought it was banned too.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 08:53
would be nice to get a pic of those sideways, wonder if all 4 of those are curved upwards?
Posted 29 January 2014 - 08:53
Blown suspension is that where we're headed?

People also wondering the same with Williams exhaust last year.

Thank heavens, Diffuser of Justice has returned from 2010!

I suspect they're actually vertical. It makes them strictly neutral but they can work with the diffuser.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 08:57
Very interesting.
That will be a must have for all teams.

Maybe it is aero neutral but the exhaust made it act like a beam wing ??

I seem to remember you are allowed a few degrees away from neutral, 3 I think.

I thought the same but considered the drag implications would be too severe, especially given efficiency is the name of the game in 2014?

That's hard to change now however. If it is a big change in pace I can only see the big budget teams being able to change the car by Barcelona
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:04
Oooh juicy stuff...this would tie in with the high cooling exits etc

It does look draggy. The thing is that the flow round that part of the car will be far from horizontal. It could provide a good downforce benefit.
Then again, it might just be some testing equipment or experiment.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:05
Discuss!!!
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:07
Fantastic idea ! Will the other teams have it ready for Bahrein ? Maybe we should have kept that hidden until Melbourne FP3
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:08
Do any other cars have those curious brake duct shrouds at the rear? Didn't think something like that would be legal, but I'm now expecting a development race in that area.

Who's that guy with the fire extinguisher?! Get your face out of our car!

They guy in the black firesuit and McLaren headset?

Oh he's macca? that's ok then

Aft of that region I agree as the rooster tails in the wet illustrate. Ahead of that region the flow would be mostly close to horizontal, but I guess the interaction with the behind that section (coupling with the diffuser flow) is what will mainly influence drag.

Those look like a measurement device of some sort if you ask me. Not only are they in a heavily regulated area, they also don't look aerodynamic. The air would be hitting a brick wall.

Pretty sure he is McLaren

Would they build one of those directly into the suspension? Seems very unlikely...i think this is a genuine attempt at something special.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:22
McLaren have a gurney flap above the diffuser which I thought was banned. Looks like theyre being very inventive, on closer inspection I thought the suspension was cased in measurement devices but if you look very close you can see that it is singular (connected seperately on each wishbone) whereas it looked as though it was 2 into 1

They are a lot more shaped in front if you look at the top view, maybe an attempt to direct hot (ie low pressure) air under the wing. I couldn't comment on the legality.
Scarbs was saying that he suspected they were trying something in this area.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:24
Scarbs says they direct air to the monkey seat.

We have the most creative car of 2014. A lot of work into that car, it's very detailed. I really hope it brings results ! Others will copy the solution so we have a one month advantage

Makes sense and the MS in turn delivers it underneath the RW, hot air expanding and cooling on the way, cunning.

Well McLaren have a recent history of trying to reinvent the lightbulb in pursuit of a golden bullet, but other fundamental parts of the car (such as mechanical grip) have let them down.

I sense most of the other big budget teams hastily creating CFD models in a panicked kerfuffle as we speak.

Hot air contracts as it cools.
No, hot air expands, cooling as it does so.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:41
Nice angle to see the rear suspension.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:43
Still can't work out the McLaren rear suspension, the fairings appear to be aerofoil shaped and attached to the wishbones...?
So either theyre not moving with the wishbone (Likely) or theres more to it

I don't think it's strictly speaking a Gurney. It's doesn't appear to be at 90 degrees to the surface and is slotted. Definitely something interesting going on there.

Close to, but it would already have something of an upward flow as the influence of the wing and diffuser propogates forwards. It looks like they're trying to take advantage of that.

Nice angle to see the rear suspension.
Actually it`s nice angle to see 2014 F1 cars as a whole and MP4-29 just looks pretty from here.
I`m still more interested in rear suspention and those boxes next to the wheels...

Looks like they they have really put some work into the sidepod intakes and surroundings.
Posted 29 January 2014 - 09:50
Yep, it's definitely part of the suspension. Interesting.

The flow field pretty horizontal until underneath the rear wing and beam wing.

Not exactly a gurney flap (even though it's usually called like that, a real gurney wouldn't have a slot under it) but bodywork over diffused in a allowed zone. Other teams have similar solutions (Ferrari, Mercedes...) Nothing to write home about
