Mark Webber's vault in Valencia 2010 is difficult to beat, no?

I thought Kubica's 2007 shunt at Canada was pretty spectacular. I lost count of how many times his car spun around.

Mercedes really were the flying arrows that weekend, with 2 or 3 flips.

Kenny Brack at Texas springs to mind instantly. That anyone can survive a 200g impact is just nuts.

This must be high, high, high on the list. Bodine's Daytona crash!

Danny Bagwell isn't far off though!

Sorry for going on with NASCAR, but Mike Hamon... well.

Cheers, I couldn't be bothered to add a link! Poor old Keith O'Dor. What a season 1992 was, I'll never see a better tin-top championship than that.

Last NASCAR one, Eric McClure. This isn't so much about disintegrating as the others, but more about sheer violence and forces. And makes it loose even worse (for me). It might be the worst accident I've ever seen. (crash at 47 sec)

Stan Fox Indy 500!

I am not sure if this qualifies as 'spectacular' or just 'too much'. Viewer discretion is advised, no fatality, just painful too watch, but at the same time, shows courage, and how racers care for eachoter.

I had initially planned to do a "top 5" for myself, and then remembered that last one.

I have been watching racing for decades. Watching that Wheldon crash live made me sick to my stomach. Damn cars flying through the air.

Never have watched Zanardi's crash. Don't want to.

BTW - No need for anyone to post the video's for me.

Danny Watts at Oulton Park. If only for the fact that I was flagging at the straight on flag point when he was launched and some debris hit the tree trunk above my head, and also that my better half was in the observers box, where they found a 1" diameter ball bearing from the drive shaft on the floor and grease marks on the back of the box.
Most surprising memory was the complete nonchalance of the driver as he walks past the wreck afterwards.

The marshalling at that race was shocking. So much so that the circuit owners ended up paying out a fortune in damages to Ota. I seem to remember there was a lot of fallout from that accident, which changed Ota's life completely, such as arguments over pre-race agreements and the safety car driving way too fast.

Jack Turner's barrel rolls (I counted about 15) down the front stretch at Indy in 1963 were pretty incredible - although he had been practising for the previous 2 years so there was no excuse for not being dramatic.

Mario at Indy 40 years later.

Jim Rigsby at Dayton was shocking for the sheer altitude, and the inevitable outcome.

In F1, De Cesaris at the 1985 Austrian GP was very impressive when viewed from the long range camera.

Warwick at Monza in 1990 was scary.

It was shockingly bad marshalls, and they also left Ota laying on the ground, with a halfway melted helmet, still burning hot.

Shinichi Yamaji who helped him checked into a hospital in May 2014, and died the following day, don't know why, but a sad situation!

The only time I had a heart in my mouth during F1 race - Valencia 2010. Also McNish's accident at Le Mans 2011 looked nasty. And do not forget Las Vegas 2011. For spectacular F1-wise it's probably Spa 1998.

I was going to go for Spa 98, but mainly because I got showered with CF debris...

Brundle at Adelaide, Webber at Valencia, the Mercs at Le Mans 99 (also Webber), Jackie Oliver vs Jackie Ickx (forget the race but he tore open the side fuel tank)... there is a ridiculously long list - I've skipped the tragic ones, that so few of them are tragic is for the best.

There have been a series at La Source - 2011/12?  I remember an hilarious gif of Alonso's life flashing before his eyes as a car scraped over his head...

EDIT2... Aha.,, gif4.gif

That was my first thought too. Valencia is not even Mark Webber's most spectacular crash.

Story is Manfred didn't know how bad it had been.  He went back to the pits and said he'd had an off.  Then atomized bits of what had been a March 802 were dribbled back to the pits.

That night he saw the accident on the news - and promptly threw up.

Behra at Avus. The Aston Nimrod that set fire to the forest at le mans. Scheckter taking out everyone and their neighbours and their pets at Silverstone 73.

I'm not sure how I feel about posting fatal crashes in here, as I feel you can't enjoy the "spectacularness"  when you know someone has been killed or seriously injured, but in terms of exhibiting the utterly insane forces on a racing car Smiley's accident shocks me every time I see it.

I was taking it as read that fatalities/serious injuries were well outside the parameters.  To see an accident like Winkelhock's and see him walk - indeed run - away from the wreckage is a testament to the safety standards of racing.  And shows how many lives have been saved by such things.

But fatal accidents are a part of history that we cannot ignore.  The racing press minimized them for years to counter the yellow press that maximized them.  It's not easy...

The one that shocked me the most, and seen live was Simoncelli and I never want to see that again.

The most violent accident ive seen is barichello that weekend in imola in 94
http://www.google.co...4fl8XdoLZqqBBng

Then this is one i'll always remember, amazing that no one was really hurt
http://www.google.co...QjoJSCdUsDCa_GA

Another one where its astonishing no one was killed especially the folk behind the barrier I still cant work out how the car landed trackside:

A perfectly honourable standpoint, but I can't reconcile it with your final point - why do you keep seeing Smiley's crash then?

Another vote for Kubica at Montreal.

There was this one where one of the Williams (Mansell or Patrese?) did a Cobra maneuver after hitting the rear of a car in front. That was pretty nuts too.

'Spectacular' should be used to describe accidents with non-fatal/non-serious (no doubt as the OP intended)

Yea, I'd say that's right at the top...

The live 'Speedvision' version commentary (Hobbs/Posey) is quite dramatic - recommend another viewing
