I am carrying out some detailed research into this C type Jaguar first supplied to them in may 1953 and painted yellow.

They continued to race a yellow C type right through until the 11th sept 1954 at the Tourist Trophy at Dundrod.

I am particularly looking for any photos of this car at Lemans 1954 and

onwards and specifically the Zandvoort meeting in August 1954.

Any other information on the car or for that matter C types in general would be greatly appreciated

Here are some photos from the August 1954 Zandvoort meeting.  Photos are property of Johannes Van Dieten, Jr.   Laurent was #60.  Sorry the photos are so small.  Can someone make 'em bigger?

PRESS RELEASE

For immediate release: Images
2 February 2016

THE WORLD’S FINEST LONG-TERM PRESERVEDJAGUAR C-TYPE –
BONHAMS UPDATE

A closer look at the ‘time machine’ Jaguar headed for Monaco

Bonhams forthcoming Monaco Sale on May 13 will feature the world’s finest as-original, running, long-term preserved 'time-machine' Jaguar C-Type, UK road-registered ‘POV 114’.

On January 14, 1955, this outstanding example of Jaguar's double-Le Mans-winning XK120C design was registered under chassis number ‘XKC 011’, and was sold ex-works to the Dunlop Rubber Company. It survives today in essentially identical specification.

The preceding history of Jaguar’s works team car ‘XKC 011’ embraces the 1952 Le Mans 24-Hours, the 1953 Mille Miglia and Targa Florio, plus a race win at Goodwood, when driven by such Jaguar stalwarts as Sir Stirling Moss, Major Tony Rolt and Peter Walker.

The Jaguar world at large has long accepted a contemporary works team anecdote that a subsequent body swap saw chassis ‘XKC 011’ fitted with the body from sister car ‘XKC 047’, which had itself been campaigned by the Belgian Ecurie Francorchamps team during the 1953 Sports Car World Championship season.

As works prepared, and tended by Jaguar factory team mechanics, ‘XKC 047’ competed in two 1953 24-Hour races – at Le Mans and at Spa-Francorchamps – plus the ADAC 1,000 Kilometres classic at the Nürburgring in Germany. ‘XKC 047’ finished 9th overall in the great French race, co-driven by its formal owner Roger Laurent / Baron Charles de Tornaco. At Spa Laurent shared it with future Ferrari personality Jacques Swaters and at the Nürburgring with Ferrari’s great future three-time Le Mans-winner Olivier Gendebien.

Bonhams' comprehensive investigation of ‘XKC 011’ (aka ‘POV 114’) to be offered at Monaco, initially revealed evidence identifying its chassis as having been the works team car which substituted at the last moment as the Ecurie Francorchamps entry in the 1954 Le Mans 24-Hour race. After our attention was drawn to other features of the car, further inspection now indicates that such participation is in fact debatable.

It is therefore probable that ‘XKC 011’ as now offered by Bonhams is not really a split-identity car at all. Present opinion is that it is likely the 1953 car, chassis ‘XKC 047’ - still bearing its original, complete ‘K 1047’ body - subsequently re-stamped ‘XKC 011’ at the factory before delivery to Dunlop in 1955.

‘POV 114’ continued to be maintained by the factory when it served as a test car for Dunlop, and during its club-racing days in the hands of owner-drivers Mike Salmon, Gordon Lee and Robin Sturgess into the 1960s.

It was acquired by the Griffiths family in 1963 and it is to be offered at Monaco direct from this self-same ownership, 53 long years later.

Most significantly, it has been preserved virtually untouched in wonderfully well-patinated ‘time machine’ condition to this day.

James Knight, Group Motoring Director of Bonhams, commented, “Bonhams has been assisted in its investigation regarding this famous Jaguar C-Type by a wealth of experts, and tremendous thanks are due to British Jaguar authority Den Carlow, motoring writer Marc Noordeloos, Jaguar enthusiast Jeremy McChesney, Chris Keith-Lucas of CKL Engineering Ltd, Gary Pearson of Pearsons Engineering, Australian Jaguar authorities Les Hughes and Terry McGrath, and Andrew Tart of Andrew Tart Motor Engineering.

“While officially sold by the Jaguar factory as 'XKC 011', the histories of ‘011' and ‘047' - which became intertwined during the preceding 1954 Le Mans race period – have baffled any number of Jaguar enthusiasts and historians over the years. These recent collective efforts - most notably with the total support of the long-term owner - are getting closer to unlocking this exciting mystery in this gloriously-preserved old war-horse’s very early life.”

Bonhams inaugural Monaco Sale will present an exclusive auction of just 40 hand-picked, exceptional motor cars. Timed to coincide with the Monaco Grand Prix Historique, the Sale will take place on 13 May 2016.

The venue for this grandest of motoring auctions is the prestigious Fairmont Monte Carlo hoteloverlooking the Grand Prix circuit’s famous ‘Station’ hairpin, scene of so much motor sporting drama.

Terry, the Zandvoort pics are part of the Van Dieten/Maasland collection.  Johannes van Dieten, Jr. lives here in Victoria, BC, Canada.  In 2010, he lent me his dad's old album, which I scanned.  Photo of me, on the left, with Johannes.  You can see the resemblance to his dad.

Doug, as Terry says, the Zandvoort race was in 1954.

I have a copy of "Le Mans 1953" published by Motor Racing Publications Ltd in 1953 to celebrate the Jaguar win. On page 25 there is a black & white night picture of the Belgian Jaguar XK120C being driven passed the pits.  It was described as a privately entered stock model.  I doubt that this picture would scan very well, and I have given up on trying to post pictures here.

Six photos of this car at Le Mans 1953 at this link:

http://www.lemans-hi...20&equipa_seq=0

On page 21 of the new Hettler/Klinkel Nurburgring 1000 km book, there is a nice color photo of the following (loosely translated):

..."two Belgian Jaguar garage neighbors. Left, the car of Herman Roosdorp, he shares with Toni Ulmen.  Right in the Belgian national colors, the Ecurie Francorchamps C-type driven by Olivier Gendebien/Roger Laurent."

Both with their hoods (bonnets) raised.  The Roosdorp C-type (XKC019) is the one Van Dieten raced in 1954.

The photo is by Jack McAfee, I believe his only race abroad.  Rex McAfee has his dad's photo collection.  Maybe he can help you.  Here is a link to the McAfee website, with contact info:

Yes it is a total pain in the proverbial AR#E as would say here in Australia and some of the great subjects here now are totally devoid of photos as the location they were disappeared !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the French forum Autodiva this great colour photo of XKC011 the car EF had run at Le Mans 1954, Reims july 1954, Zandvoort August 1954, and Dundrod Sept 1954. This colour photo shows Arnold in XKC011 at Penya Rhin 23rd October 1954     http://www.autodiva.fr/forum/download/file.php?id=179853&mode=view

http://www.autodiva....t=4519&start=40

The most exciting thing is that it is then noted that Arnold used the car in many "climbs" presumably in Germany which is completely new information and I have no details of C types in hillclimbs in Germany any info re Jaguars running in motorsport events in Germany in the 1950's would be most welcome

"After the Dundrod race, EF sells the yellow car at "Jacques" Arnold, a stateless Austrian driver who ran with a Belgian licence and whose real name was Manfred. " Arnold committed the car in the Premio Penya Rhin Sport (23 October). EF makes transport to Barcelona with advantage that Swaters should run the Grand Prix Formula 1 Spain (24 October). Arnold finished the 7th race. From 1955 Arnold took German nationality by adopting the name Walter and using the C-Type in many climbs.
In the image, Arnold rolls behind the Pegaso of Fernandez in Barcelona."

I must admit the programme I have I thought listed him as "Belge"

I would very much like to hear from anyone who has details of lo key motor sport events (club racing) held in Germany in the 1950's and early 60's

I know some of the American forces ran various sprints and rallies and know that various hill climbs were popular.

Whilst I am interested in these events generally I am specifically interested in entries by Jaguars

XKC019 was also raced at Zandvoort on Pentecost 1955 by van Dieten. In the training he wrecked the front clip of 019. Between the training and the race they managed to borrow the front clip of R.E.L.M. Tielens' XKC043 which had suffered severe damage to the rear some time earlier.

The front clip had to be fetched from Maastricht, over 200 km away single trip.

So van Dieten raced XKC019 with the "donor" front clip of XKC043.

If anybody can help me find good pictures of XKC043 during the Zandvoort races in 1954 (July 25 / racing nr. ??, and August 15 /racing nr. 64) I would be very thankful.

Here is a page of photos from the Van Dieten album.  It shows XKC019 with front end damage suffered on the May 29th, 1955 weekend, as described above.  I believe the other photos show Joke Van Dieten (Maasland) with the Cotura.

The start of the July 25, 1954 Zandvoort race.  I believe XKC043 is on the second row.

Thank you very much Vince !

If you want to see what happenend to XKC043 please lookup the article "donor car saves race"  on postwarclassic.com.

(Somehow I cannot get the link nor the picture pasted in this reply)

I will try to find the newspaper item describing the front clip switch tonight.

EDIT is was in the newspaper "Dagblad voor Amersfoort" issue May 31-1955 on page 4 item titled "twee Coopers zorgden voor veel sensatie"

I will point XKC043's current owners to the photo's; I am sure they will appreciate to see them.

This exercise determining the true identity of C Type Jaguar [POV114] has certainly unearthed some other very interesting information on C types and I am guessing there are still many snippets to be found
