Looks like Honda have the edge so far with Munoz fastest.

Newgarden on the front row with the second best run.
edit: That's it, Aleshin has the pole position and bonus point.

I'm back for this race! Which means it won't be an interesting one, as I seemed to have only missed the interesting races this year (Birmingham, Mid-Ohio...). Freshly battered and bruised from my very first competitive motorsports race last weekend (British 24hr kart race). Hasn't dented my enthusiasm for IndyCar though.
Also, SATO

The Targa was remarkably fatality-free. But Masetti wasn't the only one - Giovanni Alaotti in 1934, Sergio Der Stepanian in 1958, Fulvio Tandoi in 1971 and Charles Blyth in 1973. Plus Guido Meregalli's riding mechanic in 1922 and three spectators in the 1970s.
In contrast, the Mille Miglia claimed sixty - drivers, co-drivers and spectators.
That's good work. I googled for an hour and could only find one fatality.
I look at today's isle of man, and view it as the motorcycle equivalent of the Targa and the Mille Miglia, if not even more dangerous. Even in the old days with poor safety standards, those were still considered dangerous races.

Pocono Raceway was a scary place Saturday. Juan Montoya, Charlie Kimball and Ryan Hunter-Reay all pounded the wall in morning practice and the wind picked up for qualifying, which made the Tricky Triangle even trickier. It wasn't a place for the faint of heart going into Turn 1.
In other words, a perfect scenario for Mikhail Aleshin.
I've said before that Aleshin is a really wild driver–that pole lap must've been absolutely "go-between-them-are-you-crazy" nuts in person.

Oh, OK
I never quite got UFO, Sabbath on the other hand… and I do mean early 70s here.
I think I'll stick with Wyatt if you don't mind.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who "got" it.
I first read it as "Michael Schenker", er, "Michael Schumacher", wait, I'm confused!
BTW: early 70s Sabbath and late 70s UFO (e.g SITN) are as good as it ever gets. I love Clapton. I love EVH. But Schenker is my man.

I see the picture of Mikhail lifting the P1 award trophy and i can't help but smile at the fact a Russian is beating the Americans in their own championship in America. Delightful to watch, i hope he keeps it for a win in Pocono, that i would love to see.
Just hope i didn't jinx his race!

With a Russian in with a shot of winning I wonder how many top drivers will mysteriously fall ill this evening?

Almost every other country already has. After about the 300th occurrence it even seemed to stop being a big deal for the Americans.

A work which is continually in progress. The search engine only works on names, but if you search by circuit under Madonie (two entries, for the medio and piccolo versions) you'll find all the details. The Mille Miglia ones can be found the same way. Each fatality is - as far as possible - documented with details. Additions and corrections welcomed.

I can understand a sort of unease when it comes to tracks like Pocono - especially a year after a death of a driver. I'm certainly more nervous before a super-speedway race in general, whether it's Pocono, Indy, Fontana, or Texas for that matter, the speeds are just that much higher, and when something goes wrong, it can go very wrong. Still I wouldn't say that Pocono is any more dangerous than other tracks I mentioned. In fact I seem to recall the first two races after its return to go largely without any incident. Maybe something with the aerokits unsettled the cars, I don't know... Because it's true that last year lots of guys lost it by themselves.
But anyway, Fontana's had its own share of crashes from '12-'15, including broken bones, Indy had a couple of near misses last year in practice sessions, we saw what happened in Texas this year, and Pocono, unfortunately, had Wilson's death. I wouldn't say it's because it's more dangerous than the others, it just had more bad luck.
But superspeedways like this are in the DNA of this series. I want them to be safer and as safe as possible, but at these speeds you can never be 100% safe. But like other guys have said, that's part of the draw... I don't mean death of course, but the sense of speed and the kind of racing it provides. You know what can happen, but ultimately it's a question of whether you deem the risk acceptable. These drivers obviously do, and it's just a reason more to admire them.

Crap. It really doesn't look good. At least tomorrow looks dry, but Pocono needs a good attendance and it's not going to happen this way.

So here's my problem with this ...
I think we* deserve special dispensation.
I'd love to discuss whatever the Dr. was on about but the Paddock Club is a self-absorbed, circle jerk of mind numbing proportions with the narrowest pool of respondents. I think we are a fairly erudite bunch here in IndyCar Thread World* and can deal with thoughts, perceptions, perceived political blah blah blah or whatever with greater aplomb than your average thread here on Uh Oh Sport dot com.
So I say..

Last year this race was the most fun until tragedy unfortunately struck. First and foremost I hope for a better one this year, and my thoughts are to Justin; rest easy Badass.
Having said that I am due some Indycar, it feels like a billion years since the last race. Maybe it's been my own busy August, but man, need me some Indy banter with y'all.
I had to resort to watching the bloody MotoGP race on the phone while on the coach earlier today so I wanna chill with a comfy race and some Heinekens. Nigerians on the phone ain't that fun.

Oh well, not much you can do about this.
If it is raining, it is raining.
Hope all spectators get home safe and most can come out tomorrow.
