In the latest edition of the FIA's Auto magazine, Todt said the aim was to complete a pyramid structure leading from karting through Formula Four, Three and Two to F1. "Rationalising the pathway to Formula One has been a major goal of the FIA in my time here and the designation of a new F2 would achieve that goal," said Todt, who added that confirmation of the deal was imminent.

This time we're hearing it from Todt so it looks like it's actually happening.

Brawn's statement implies GP3 becoming F3 or perhaps even a GP3-F3 merger:

"I’d love to see Formula Two and Formula Three be part of the show, and to have those drivers coming up through into Formula One," Brawn told an audience attending a book presentation in Oxford. "So you go to a race and see the young guys in Formula Two and Formula Three come through into Formula One, you get to know the names and support them.

So, it's just GP2 with a new badge. Great.

In 2018 they're supposedly changing to a new chassis with hybrid engine, but yes.

Hybrid! Yay! I'm less interested already.

There's been a chronic lack of seats for junior drivers, ever since A1GP, Superleague Formula, IFM and AutoGP went defunct. Today many European youngsters have to move to Japan or USA or change the category altogether (etc. DTM, FIA GT).

And I don't see how merging GP3 and F3 would work, especially as F3 has totally unique calendar (Norisring, Macau) whereas GP3 supports F1.

People who can afford those seats, you mean. The current series struggle to fill their grids.

I'm assuming that a GP3/F3 merger would use the F1 support calendar and simply bring F3 teams and drivers into GP3 cars, but that's speculation on my part.

People complain about GP2 cars sounding better than F1 cars? Well, just let the FIA fix that in a typical FIA way!

Can't have GP2 sound racier than F1, so I guess there'll be a muffler as well.

This thread turned depressing pretty quickly, but I guess that's what it's at...  :|

In 2018 they're supposedly changing to a new chassis with hybrid engine, but yes.

I'm pretty sure it's a twin turbo 2.2 L V6.  They rejected a hybrid engine on cost grounds.

Edit:

“We will go probably with the V6 engine, turbocharged. And tyres… I'm not sure we'll go wider tyres, because I'm happy with the races we have now. And I don't know in which direction it might go with wider tyres.”

...

The GP2 boss also warned that hybrid engines were off the table for his series: “Too expensive.

"If we want to go with hybrid, we escalate the cost completely, massively. And this is the last thing we want to do.”

Fair enough. We'll see what happens when they confirm the 2018 package.

Spec series from Karting through to F1? How is it that the powers in place year after year remove the parts making racing interesting?

Let's hope they go down the LMP2 route and we have three or four chassis constructors so there is a bit of variation on the grid.

There's basically zero chance of that happening.

 I know - depressing isn't it !

Formula 3 isn't spec (granted, in practice it's nearly spec and you only have two realistic choices of engine in FIA F3).

F3 becoming GP3 sound as spec to me, I am ready to be pleasantly surprised.

Like I said, speculation on my part. I made that comment because Brawn implied F3 should follow F1 around, comparing it to the MotoGP-Moto2-Moto3 setup.

GP2 becomes F2 with immediate effect. From fia.com:

FIA Formula 2 Championship

The World Motor Sport Council approved the creation of the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2017 onwards. The FIA reached an agreement with the Formula One Group regarding the transition of the GP2 Series to FIA Formula 2

Amazing how quickly that happened with Bernie out of the way.

Saward was likely right then. The FIA and Liberty came to an agreement over this during the process of approving the takeover. The future of GP3 and F3 will be the next question, probably for next year.

I imagine the long term future of a great deal of motor sport will be one where the sound of the engines will be less and less important.

I love it when a circle comes together...... F2 --> F3000 --> GP2 --> F2.

If only we were getting REAL Formula Two back again! :|

It's badge engineering, who cares.

At the risk of going off topic, I always wondered why the original F3000 didn't just continue with the F2 name. I get that 3000cc engines were introduced but it's not like categories hadn't changed engine formula before (or since)
