Race coincides with Yulin Festival...empty grandstands guaranteed.
Jp
Got nothing related to Yulin Festival whatsover, F1 itself is no longer a popular / trendy event to take part for local Chinese for some time already. So empty grandstands are guaranteed anyway.
No they are different although some characters looks similar / same.
Japanese Kanji is inspired from the Chinese characters ("Kanji" actually means "Chinese words") set at around 600-900 A.D ( Tang dynasty in China )
The Chinese characters keeps evolved itself throughout next 1000 years and become the "Traditional Chinese" which is still the primary written language in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
On the other hand, after the PRC starts ruling the mainland China in 1949. The government has set up a new set of characters (aiming for less strokes) which is known as "Simplified Chinese" and used inside China, as well as Singapore and other Chinese societies in S.E. Asia.
Beware that while "Traditional Chinese" and "Simplified Chinese" would be interchangeable, some ( superset ) Chinese characters may have the same writing as Japanese Kanji however Chinese version could have different ( some even in opposite ) meaning from the Japanese one.
Onto a more on-topic point; beware of Stroll on Friday:
This is what pains me about the asphalt era of F1 - drivers openly saying its a lot easier as they can just use the runoff.
Its a lot more impressive seeing drivers ramp up towards their limit and the best will push the envelope, rather than drivers going straight over the limit and coming back down from that.
► The track has been resurfaced across the start line to remove the bump that had developed. ► Additional tyres have been installed in parts of the barriers at Turns One and Eight. ► Grass-crete has been laid around Turn Two between the track and asphalt run-off. ► Additional ‘combination’ kerb elements have been installed behind the existing kerbs at Turns Two, Three and 12. These new elements are 50mm higher than the existing kerbs and are approximately 3m long and 1m wide.
However, this Tilkedrome might have an unfair reputation, as its had some humdinger moments in the past - not to mention the 161 overtakes last year. Will we get there this year with the new regs?!
Ooh golly! I can't wait to see that chap press that button and drive past the other chap on the straight. #awe #gladiatorial
Rain? Yes please. Dry is always good for having a clear idea where each team is at, but Melbourne was such a boring race a wet race would be an ideal tonic.
Red Bull perhaps? I mean we didnt saw them with these cars under these conditions yet.
I don't think they have the right balance, and a tad shy on the downforce compared to Merc and Ferrari. That's the impression I got from Melbourne anyway.

Was it ever popular?
I can't ever remember full grand stands - maybe the first year?

Yes it was trendy social event in the first couple of seasons -- Olympic medalists, celebrities and government officials who have no idea about motor-racing have filled full in the VIP boxes, also those nothing-to-see stands in turn 11/12/13 were filled with ordinary people .
Drivers who could do with a good weekend (in rank order):
1. Kevin Magnussen
2. Jolyon Palmer (especially as he's spent the last week implying a chassis error was the root cause of his Melbourne struggles - best prove that this weekend in that case)
3. Kimi Raikkonen
You could maybe add Stroll but I think he can be forgiven some of the over-exuberance of being an 18 year old for now.
The practice sessions look quite wet as well. You would expect the teams are keen to test the wet weather tyres tomorrow, since Barcelona testing was almost worthless.
But since F1 teams always act irrationally, they probably wont' go out to the track at all. And then complain during the race about the conditions and being unprepared.
So, rain for both tomorrow practice, sunny quali & wet race?
Should be mixed as hell
Typical F1 weather I would guess. Wet in practice sessions, therefor barely laps because of dry predictions for quali and rain on sunday only in the morning...
Just wait for this years cars to tackle the sweepers in the middle sector!
Turn 7 is going to be flat out, at least for the better cars.
Will be fun for drivers, but reduces the effect the corner has on the competition, which will be a shame.

161 overtakes last year and I don't remember a single one. Quality over quantity pls, never was a fan of the cheese tires and DRS flybys.
DRS is fine here, they just need to get rid of it on the back straight. It's just not needed and if a driver doesn't stick a pass there, it conveniently allows drivers to get too easily setup for a DRS run on the main straight.
This rigid requirement to have two sections at every track is silly in general. If this place didn't have that pointless kink of a Turn 5, that run up to Turn 6 would have been a good spot, though.

Unfortunately, that's one of the consequences of having to make an engine last 4 GP weekends...
Probably, by mid season, drivers will only perform parade laps during the free practices to please the sponsors, with all the testing being done in simulators!
I've stopped watching the Press Conferences - they're too much like PR exercises...
Cue Hamilton's podium speech....'first of all I would like to thanks the fans, they are amazing...and then I would like to say congratulations to Seb for winning...etc etc..'
I am hoping for dry weather. There is next to no racing in the wet anymore due to Charlie Whiting and some of the drivers who like to complain about how "undrivable" it is.
