Castle Howard Hill Climb

(5 miles west of Malton, Yorkshire)

 

C.A.N. May, Speed Hill-Climb, G.T. Foulis & Co LTD, 1962, Page 140. (First events 1959):

 

"Another drive up to a 'stately home', with characteristics similar to those of Ragley, was brought into use by the Yorkshire Sports Car Club when permission was obtained to use the drive at Castle Howard, near Malton in Yorkshire. A first meeting took place on 27 June and another late in September. At both Fastest Time of Day was made by Alan Ensoll, in a D-type Jaguar, first in 26.03 sec and then in 24.20 sec. As at Ragley the road over open parkland, with little real gradient, includes a sharpish right-hand bend on the upper reaches, slightly blind by virtue of rising ground on the inside of the corner, and has a finishing straight right under the walls of the huge mansion itself."

I attended at least two hillclimbs there in 70/71. Great setting , rubbish course. Mickey Mouse corners at bottom and insanely fast top straight where  I think I remember Martin Brain's Cooper Chrysler doing something daft like 160mph

The setting for the Granada TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited as well of course.  

 

I never saw a hillclimb there, regrettably, but remember reading reports in Autosport; probably written by Ian Wagstaff or Chris Mason - which would have made them worth reading in any case.

I competed in the Wharfedale Trophy Speed Hill Climb at Castle Howard on 7th April 1963 in my Lotus X1. Blew a head gasket on my second run.

Missed a programme on eBay in April 2021, damn. I would have liked that copy.

Robin Scott drove the ex-Henderson

supercharged Cooper-J.A.P. to win at

Yorkshire's Castle Howard. His time of

26.71 secs. constituted a new record for the

lengthened course and narrowly beat Phil
