And yet thousands of females show up and watch the racing...it's baffling.
Perhaps many of them are attending the race with their partner, rather than initiating the outing (not all, I know I'm an exception, but that is my impression from attending races)? According to the latest Global F1 Fan Survey just 10% of fans are female.
Who's to say how many more might turn up if the sport was less clearly gendered in its marketing?

Some people are able to work and make a great living doing things they love, and it doesn't always mean it is properly "real" in yours or others eyes. That shouldn't diminish the fact they are gainfully employed. Are we going to now propose a list of work that only you (and others who are likeminded) approve of?

I shall be furious if they do away with grid girls.
The objectification of women reminds me that I'm not a homosexual whilst simultaneously reminding me that men are more important than women.
Posted 14 December 2017 - 16:31
The "grid girls" I've spoken to around Zandvoort were all either (well!) paid models or fans of motorsport. But it's all good as long as some feel nice about removing them from the event...
Anyway, if this is the way forward - I assume this means the director will stop filming the D-list "celebrities" or partners in their half-a-shirts? Wouldn't want people to think F1 is promoting 20-year-olds having a relation with a 50+ millionaire.

I think alternatives are good. The gird guys at Monaco recently was an interesting idea, felt less backwards but wasn't really all that different. I would much rather see passionate fans and/or children in those spots, though preferably not to the highest bidder.

The whole issue seems to fly a long way over the heads of a lot of people. Think of it this way. Six year old boy/girl twins go to a race with their parents. What impressions about what they can do in the future will those kids come away with? I guarantee that the girl isn't going to be thinking she could be driving one of those cars one day when all she see's are women in skimpy clothing holding placards, handing out free samples and applauding the men off the track.
I remember going to car shows in the 70's and 80's where women were virtually performing soft porn on top of the cars while men ogled them. Is that acceptable?

Nobody is saying that models don't enjoy being models, obviously they do. People are just asking what their relevance to the sport is meant to be.
Do we really need a chorus line of hot models to make the show look better?
This is already sexy enough to get me to tune in.

I don't need to make that list anyway, it's common sense. We all know what jobs are actually helping the World move forward.

I hardly even notice that there are grid girls these days. Waste of money if you'd ask me.
What's the point? Can't they just put up a weighted sign instead? I'm sure nobody has to actually hold that thing.
I certainly wouldn't want to keep it for the tradition.
I want to see good racing between the greatest cars on earth, all these other aspects aren't that valuable for me.

They're six year olds... they're not going to get any impressions about their future career opportunities. It's going to be great fun, and next week they'll want water balloons and a new baseball.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
i don't care one way or another, because i've never seen much of them in the broadcasts. i'm usually more interested of what i can see of the car or driver during the grid walk. however, i think this is one of those classic throwbacks to the "playboy" days of old. it's one of those aspects of not just motorsports, but car culture in general that i will shamefully uphold, because i like it. fast cars and beautiful women have always gone together. i'd hate to lose it.
that said, maybe going to kids as mascots would be the most amicable way forward. *sigh*

However the world around them is being shaped, even if their personal impressions aren't at that moment in time.
It isn't about girls going to races as kids and seeing women as grid girls and only wanting to become 'grid girls' and nothing more.
It's a core problem in society that women are not seen on the same level as men. It's why it's seen as 'acceptable' for women not to get top jobs purely down to gender, it's why it's seen as 'acceptable' for women to be paid less for the same job, same hours as a man. It's why it's seen as 'acceptable' to sexually assault women. The list goes on...
If Formula 1 decides it is going to be part of breaking the trend then good for it.
Women are worth more than the sexual arousement of men.

I doubt most patrons give two hoots.
If you're at the track, you obviously can't see anything happening on the grid unless you're in the grandstand opposite, and then you're more interested in spotting the drivers and other famous faces than looking at the people holding the signs. If you're watching at home, you only see what the cameras pick up, and the only time the grid girls appear on the FOM broadcast is during the clappy podium walk. I barely even notice them during the grid walk itself, as the attention of the presenter is so focused on running about trying to catch someone interesting to talk to.
No, they'll disappear, and it will be met with a wave of indifference from most, and a small positive for some.

There is all this talk about women being in F1, and there they are, on the grid, looking pretty. I think they need to get rid of the grid girls before they can talk about women being in F1 in another capacity.
I don't mind pretty women, of course not, it's just strange in this PC culture we live in today, that there can be a group of what look like model type girls....how are the little girl F1 fans supposed to feel? "
Mommy, do I have to look like that to be in F1?"
In my opinion liberty will get rid of them to appeal to more women

If we can all agree that being male or female should not stop you from working in Formula 1 be it driving, managing, presenting, commentating or whatever, surely being a man shouldn't stop someone from dressing up to look nice and holding a sign on the grid? That way it's just a level playing field for everyone.

I'm encouraged by Ross Brawn's words on the subject. They're clearly not doing this for some ideologically driven social justice crusade, they're just initiating a sensible discussion over grid girls and their place in the sport. That's how it should be.

Males objectification have achieved perfection several hundreds years ago with all the statues and art depicting barely clad men. Females on the other hand have just been given their right for global exposure, they deserved to be given time to reach to our level! Don't take away their chance! Grid Girls = equality!

sharing the space with local kids would be fine, too...

These statements are wrong on so many levels (I always wanted to say that)
Firstly by indicated a gender to the state and federation 'nanny' you are implying men cannot micro manage our existence.
As a card carry member of the male race I demand we change the terms to "deeply concerned person's state" or "Dong carrying person's federation"
You have to erase these sexiest terms before it's too late and trans-gender robots take over the world.

Short story long, if you take your son to a race, he sees drivers, mechanics and engineers. If you take your daughter to the race, the only women she'll see is people holding umbrellas in skimpy clothing. And we wonder why so few women make it into motorsports, let alone F1.
