That's some serious effort! It'll take a while to process all those jokes. And eerily, I don't think it will be far from true.

Strictly speaking there is a perfectly adequate first corner there, but in the infinite wisdom of the race organisers, they elected not to use it...

Hockenheim is great for racing and also great for fans. So many seats that give a great view of the circuit.

As we get more and more 'street' circuits in F1 (street circuits like Jeddah and Miami which aren't street circuits in reality), having a race at a circuit like Hockenheim is always good.

There are two perfectly adequate corners there.  IT is the inability of racing drivers to slow down enough to get round them that is the problem.  Put a stone wall there instead of some cones and watch the whole field get round the corner safely.

Yes and this AWS Nurburgring 150 miles is also held at Abu Dhabi, celebrating the long history of Nurburgring with style. There will even be Santa Claus for the kids, promoting the new live action Disney reboot of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Tickets start at 300 dollars for the race and 400 for personal meeting with Santa. I'm hearing Crofty is already queuing up for the latter.

Are they still looking at Singapore as the replacement for Russia?

Hopefully not but if they are, the second event should be held in daylight. Like the support races already are. The track and park surroundings looks so much better in sunlight, beautiful in fact.

This is the idea, as far as I'm aware.

And indeed, I think with the proliferation of night races now, Singapore should make theirs a daytime race every year. The circuit would look a lot better, as you say, and would save them a fortune on lighting (and carbon footprint).

I don't know - at night, the Singapore race could be anywhere as all you see are lights and a ribbon of track.  But in daylight, you would see a city that ....could be anywhere...

Isn't it a night race to make it more time friendly for the market? Be surprised if they went back on that.

It was a night race to provide a slightly cooler temperature to spectators, escape the afternoon rain and be the first night race (2008)

Time wise it is the same as all the Asian and OZ race which is morning in Europe.

Singapore late afternoon should be fine if not too hot and does not rain.

If something like Ferrari Challenge (closed cockpit and probably no AC during session and mostly not-so-fit amateur drivers) can race in the daylight heat of Singapore, then I'm sure F1 can as well. The intense humidity and monsoons, they have experience of this from Sepang.

current Ferrari Challenge cars do have air conditioning, so that makes a huge difference. That might be something that was removed on the earliest Challenge cars, but at some point they realized that the wealthy amateurs they’re marketing to would much prefer to have AC

I think I read that on 458 Challenge AC was on only when the car was stationary. Anyway would make sense with the current model

Are they still looking at Singapore as the replacement for Russia?

I thought they were trying to convince Qatar to hold the race but Qatar initially didn't want an F1 race this year because of their preparations of the world cup soccer.

Portimao and Jerez are know to have proposed to hold the race but F1 doesn't want the replacement race to be in Europe aparently because it would be more difficult for freight transport (don't know why it's harder).

A second race at Bahrein (hopefully the short outside track then) was also mentioned. I think they should consider Dubai Autodrome: better circuit as Yas Marina, in the Middle East and they have a licence / the grading to hold an F1 race.

What happened to Turkey as a replacement? When Russia was canceled back in Februari everyone was saying at the time that Turkey was already as good as a done deal but there hasn't been talk about Turkey anymore lately.
If they want to hold it in Asia: the Buddh circuit in India would be a great choice, they still have the Grade One licence.

The race slot is 25th September, Monza is on 11th.

F1 has an option for 18th September only of Teams and TV stations agree.

For whatever reason F1 does not want to send the equipment from Monza/European base to where ever Europe or Middle east while this was originally scheduled for Sochi.

I guess going to Singapore is cheaper than doing an additional stopover in between

F1 should consider Germany as the way things are going Mick and Sabastian may not be around for next year.

Other option should be Kuwait if middle east as the UAE already a GP and has a wonderful track.

Germany should always be on the calendar: so should countries like France, Italy, UK, Belgium, Japan, Spain. Europe is where the heimat of the sport is.

Hockenheim or Portimao would both be great. Given we have plenty of circuits not being used, a 2nd race in Singapore would be terrible. Same last year, we had 2 races in Austria and none in Germany. Mugello would also be a good option for this year if Hockenheim and Portimao can't be used.

The powers that be are saying the middle Eastern venues are too hot in September - even though at night these would be cooler than Miami. But it seems this is off the agenda.

The most sensible option for me would be Sepang, but the Malaysians have zero interest in hosting.

So it seems 80% likely that it will be a Singapore double header, with day first and then night later.

I guess it is for the best. Singapore probably will not pay anything for the extra race. The TV revenue will remain un affected as there will be 23 races.

F1 will probably loose hosting fee if they had not already collected from Russia like Haas.

[Joe Saward] One idea that is kicking around is a race in Colombia with a very solid project under development in the city of Barranquilla. The word is that this is funded with private money. I heard in Miami that this would be called the Caribbean Grand Prix.

Much as I have defended Saward, that one is less likely to happen than The Grand Prix of Gibraltar.

He is mentioning what was being discussed, which group visited the GP, Why they visited etc.

He is not the one who is going to evaluate the races that will be considered for the calendar.

You sound as if you don't want him to report these stories or you are offended to hear of the a GP (The prestigious european sport) even being considered by those people..

I've heard the Barranquilla rumour a few times now. No smoke without fire and all that...

But so many solid ideas never come to fruition, mainly when the question of funding comes along. And some even have the circuit built and then they don't happen (Vietnam), so there's a long way to go yet.

But if that race happens, I'll be on the first plane there!

This is apparently a leaked layout, but I don't know the veracity.

Given the 'reliability' of Sawards scoops, I'd say he heard a story about some wealthy Colombian coming to the US and used his own imagination to fabricate a story from this.

Quiet often that happens because of caution.
But if F1 was a spec series, it will still be dominated by few drivers as we see in junior series for the following reasons

1. F1 championship is so intense that is more about being in the right mind for the longest period of time, perhaps the whole year as the drivers are so close. We see large difference between team mates just because they are in different mindset for different races. 23 races will be a chellenge for the best of the best, that only a few will be running for the championship, but maybe a few more race winners.

2. There is still difference with the teams, some will always be better than others.

The F1 championship is about who can build the best car.  Nothing wrong with that as I appreciate the technology.  However it’s not primarily a race craft competition between drivers.

This. And that is how it should be.

Although Liberty and Netflix seem to think the drivers/personalities are the only thing that matrer.

On the other hand it's arguably the marketing of the personalities and the Netflix series which has been pivotal in fuelling new interest in sport and guaranteeing the commercial basis for the teams to be able to spend enough to support such an advanced, constructor-based open competition.

I would suggest that they're unavoidably interconnected, and that F1/Liberty are wise to that.

This. And that is how it should be.

Although Liberty and Netflix seem to think the drivers/personalities are the only thing that matrer.

It's always been a paradox of sorts. Everyone knows F1 is about cars but throughout its history all the biggest stories are those of the drivers, not the cars or engineers. It's natural that this is what we're drawn to most easily but it makes for a pretty weird sport when you think about it.

Indeed. The competition is about designing and building the best car. But that's not very marketable. However, the way of judging who has created the best car - racing them - is. But people relate much more to other people than to machines, so the drivers become the focus.

Ideally, the "show" would see the drivers of the same team challenging each other for the wins. But, for a number of reasons, this is not a what teams like to happen - and we end up with a situation where we need two (or more) different teams being able to challenge for the win.

That Baranquilla track looks cool though. For me personally I just would like to see them race on great race tracks which is why I like the Jeddah track. I don't find Yas Marina or the Miami circuit particularly interesting as race circuit and they give an artificial feeling.

The best circuits imho are still the ones in a natural environment like Suzuka, Mugello or Spa. Portimao as well with those lovely hills.

We’re a long way from the days when a Brands Hatch, Nurburgring, Donington Park or Jerez had to fill in at short notice to bring the season up to 16 races. I don’t think anyone’s really going to mind having “only” 22 races this year.
