Obvious one here.  It'd be *really* nice to have a dark mode for the forums.  I've gotten so used to dark modes for sites that using these bright white ones feels piercing and nearly painful to look at for a length of time, especially in the evening/at night.

Somebody making a Chrome extension for this would be fantastic as well.

Darker is invariably harder to read by its nature.

I hear you, though. If it ever bugged me, I'd either turn my monitor brightness down or put on sunglasses (seriously).

I find dark modes difficult to use. So I use f.lux

I have zero issues reading any dark mode sites.

And this was never an issue before at the same brightness. Was only until I started using dark modes more that I've felt the difference become more apparent. It's way easier on my eyes and I think it looks better, too.

Either way, I'm not demanding it be universal, would just like it to be an option. I'm far from alone in preferring dark modes nowadays.

Dark mode is the future. Twitter in dark mode is infinitely better for your eyes and aesthetically.

There is a chrome extension called high contrast. The screen grab shown gives you an idea of what to expect and if it's suitable for your needs. It can be enabled and disabled as needed with a number of settings to select from.

Just gave it a try and it's a bit of a pain as it's set as default for every page I visit and I have to manually disable it every time if I dont want it.  I cant just have it off for everything and only tell it to activate for certain sites.

Not quite the 'dark mode' I'd like anyways.  Good dark modes tend to use a dark grey rather than full black background.

Thanks, though.

Skype has just had a full overhaul with a dark theme. It's fantastic.

Gonna give this a bump.

It's 2020 now.  Can we please get a dark mode option admins?  Not having one makes this place feel quite dated to use, along with being much less comfortable to use at night.

Be a step ahead and do it yourself :)

EDIT: Somehow this BB doesn't like certain urls. So I need to do it the hard way. The doubledot slash slash section should look like the usual URL, except that it starts with the word chrome instead of http(s)

type chrome {followed by double dot} (:) //flags
Hit enter

Search for Force Dark Mode for Web Contents

Choose your preferred settings.

You will be asked to relaunch Chrome.

Voila.

That sort of thing just really doesn't work all that well.  A specifically designed dark mode for a given site/app is really nice, though.

Is anyone still taking care of anything here after Grayson left, anyway?

There's a Firefox extension (desktop and mobile) called Dark Reader that works pretty much perfectly for me. It's available for Chrome, too.

Plenty of customisation available if you want to tweak the colours to your liking. AFAIK it very simply just swaps white space for black and black text for white. It's very effective. I haven't touched the settings because the default is fine for me, but if you wanted dark blue (a la Twitter's "dim" mode) instead of dark grey/black, you can choose that.

I'm pretty sure you can whitelist the rest of the internet too, so it only activates for the forum, if that's your wish. Or simply turn it "on/off" at your choosing.

I came here to ask for the same thing. However TomNokoe's suggestion works a treat. Not sure why, but as I've got older I'm finding high contrast white background web pages uncomfortable to read. Dark mode is so much more comfortable. Thanks Tom!

I am respectfully bumping this thread and requesting a dark mode.

Which web browser do you use? I simply use an extension called "Dark Reader" in my chrome browser. It allows you to turn only certain websites to dark mode automatically or by toggle button, and it saves your selection for that specific website, and not for others.

Edit: and I've just missed that this is what Tom mentioned above. I highly recommend it. It works a treat on all websites.

This is genuinely the ONLY website I regularly use nowadays that doesn't offer a dark mode.

All because some stubborn admin doesn't like it, and is apparently too self-centered to understand a forum isn't about what THEY like, and should be about what makes the users happy.  smh

Again, only asking for an option here.

Somebody in charge clearly has a massive ego to keep ignoring this.

I don’t think anyone is folding their arms in mute resistance to the idea, I am just really doubtful that anyone with the power to give a dark mode is monitoring this sub-forum at all any more. If they are, they never answered my question about that here:

Autosport appears to be on Autopilot these days. Nobody monitors this section and nothing ever improves. It seems like they're actively trying to kill it off in a way that'll push people into migrating to Motorsport.com

I think the bigger point is that Autosport isn't providing value for its readers. It's embarrassing how many problems the web site has and nobody seems to be tasked with fixing them.

I'm a big fan of blue light filters especially in the evening. I've got a blue light filter on the phone and also an app on my MacBook called NightTone. Both apps really good for taking the eye strain away. Would recommend

Gonna re-up this topic.

Come on now.

So I’ve done some precursory digging into this because I’d also like a dark mode, and have learned a few things:

• Even the most modern versions of the board software, released this year, do not have a native dark mode option, so anything we developed would *probably* have to be user-toggled every evening
• If we implemented a user-selectable dark mode, it would have to be a “theme”, chosen in the same manner as the “Atlas F1” theme or the mobile version. Our version of IP Board is over ten years old and there appear to be very few remaining themes for this version of the board available on the web for download, so one of us familiar with coding (or willing to sit down and learn it) would have to tackle the project
• The default themes we use for the board are already heavily customised, so it’s unlikely we’d be able to copy/paste stuff from another dark mode theme (if we were to find one) onto ours

• The mobile version of the board is itself a separate selectable theme, so we’d have to make two dark modes, one for desktop browsing and one for mobile, and then make sure they toggled correctly depending on the time of day and device used to access the board—not impossible but it’s uncertain how easily an auto-switch for these parameters could be broken given that selecting the desktop site on mobile or vice-versa has a habit of breaking the auto-switching already

So these are the current limiting factors. Bearing in mind that any of us left are maintaining the board as volunteers, the lead time on this, were we to start devoting spare time to it now, would probably be somewhere from months to years.

Probably not the answer anyone wanted, but there you go. Unless you know anyone with coding experience in PHP who is familiar with IP Board the wait will be a while yet. It’s probably just easier to use a browser plugin and configure it to your liking.

Futzing around with the CSS got me this in about 15 minutes.

I'm OK at CSS these days, but I always think of this.
