It is Race Day, cats and kittens! And soon it will all be happening:

RACE START TIMES 23f0.png Round 9 of the 2018 F1 season is almost upon us Here's what time the race starts where you are 1f30e.png1f30d.png1f30f.png#AustrianGP #F1

Enjoy the pole lap here, Bottas making it two pole laps on the bounce at this circuit. Hamilton rarely seems to do THAT well by his standards here. Weird.:

The rest of the grid, with penalties aplenty, currently lining up as follows, care of Sky:

Here's the provisional Austrian GP grid, with the race live on Sky Sports F1 at 2.10pm.
1. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes
2. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes
3. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari
4. Max Verstappen, Red Bull
5. Romain Grosjean, Haas
6. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari*
7. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull
8. Kevin Magnussen, Haas
9. Carlos Sainz, Renault
10. Nico Hulkenberg, Renault
11. Esteban Ocon, Force India
12. Pierre Gasly, Toro Rosso
13. Lance Stroll, Williams
14. Stoffel Vandoorne, McLaren
15. Sergio Perez, Force India
16. Sergey Sirotkin, Williams
17. Charles Leclerc, Sauber**
18. Marcus Ericsson, Sauber
19. Brendon Hartley, Toro Rosso***
PIT-LANE START
Fernando Alonso, McLaren****
*issued three-place grid penalty for impeding Carlos Sainz
**issued five-place grid penalty for gearbox change
*** taking engine penalties
**** pit-lane start for changes during parc ferme

That looks like something off a kids TV show, not the world's leading motor sport. Imagine seeing that in the #WorldCupWorldCup_2018.png centre circle super imposed...

A good point about the football. I think all of us who see the impact that the removal of key sponsors has had on the sport recognise the importance of the sponsors, and of them being able to feel they're being noticed but there's got to be better ways than this.

To end on a more upbeat note, it's Daniel Ricciardo's birthday.

Happy bloody birthday @danielricciardo! 1f382.png1f389.png#AustrianGP

Some kind of engine failure in candle number one, alas.

I now appreciate the start time, as I can patch this race for the football an hour in.

Not great for Liberty I guess, but I bet a lot of people will do the same.

Is anyone else slightly disappointed that they didn't have all this digital trickery in the tobacco era? They could've superimposed cigs in the drivers' mouths during interviews, drawn 80 foot tall packs of Marlboros by the side of every corner, and the results graphics could've rolled up to the top of the screen into a cigarette shape.

Are they nuts, to clash it with a world cup game?  ):

But hey Alonso can watch the Spain game, when his engine will be gone again ;)

So McLaren must’ve decided to change the set-up, as surely they could’ve replaced the broken wing and started from the grid.

Somebody needs to stop Daniel from being so bloody nice. It's making the rest of us look bad. Also, I love the wording on that cake. It reminds me of the cake that is bought for Malcolm tucker in The Thick Of It, I'm not sure if anybody remembers it. I can't really link to the clip, it's has a few rude words in it. (His secretary brings in a cake that says Happy Birthday ****, and he says, 'this could be from anybody.')

You'll never build an audience if you keep mucking the start time around. They're meant to be Americans, have they learned nothing from American tv???

Max vs Dan will be fun today.

Depending on how slow Bottas is, he may just drag along Max/Kimi/Ric/Seb...

I have a feeling about Bottas today, providing he shows some backbone at the start I could see him winning this.

Seldom is he faster than Hamilton on Sunday. 3 consecutive DRS zones will be difficult to defend if the driver behind is faster.

I dont really get why they can have France 1 hour later in order to avoid a clash with the world cup (or at least not with the most important game), but cant have this one hour earlier to avoid the clash all together.

Given how close it is this year, I hope Mercedes are not foolish enough to let Bottas win. But by that I mean by telling Hamilton he cannot attack, or by giving him a poor strategy that means it happens on purpose.

Hopefully Vettel can get a good start so we can see some good racing between him and Lewis, dispite this being a battle between them there has been very little on the road action between the two.

Let's see what kind of start strategy Mercedes has. Räikkönen should be fast due to softer tires.

Most motorsport fans would prefer to miss half an hour of a Round of 16 football game, instead of decide between F1 and MotoGP.

I dislike team orders (unless there's only 2-3 races left), I would love to see a Bottas-Hamilton battle, it would be infinitely more entertaining than a simple 1-2 cruise to the flag.

Your right, since in F1 only 1 team/car will able to fight for the win, instead of plenty in MotoGP.

Complete opposite on my end. Most people I know watching F1 prefer to watch a good MotoGP race instead boring football.
