His conditions worsened dramatically after a shoulder surgery.

Godspeed, Presidente.
He managed to bring Ferrari back to glory, from the dust.

Vettel winning the title would be a beautiful ending to Sergio's work.

Can't find any evidence that he has died, despite a bit of searching. Did find this - http://www.autonews....-italian-report

Which is different but sadly, not very different.  :(

Very sad news. :(

I would request that this thread be used for paying respects and reflecting on his life and contribution to the sport and to keep the natural questions/speculations about what the future holds for the F1 team and people in it over in the existing thread about the new boss here:

Oh my, sad news... That came out of nowhere a few days ago. If Ferrari win next time I hope they dedicate it to him. Definitely changed Ferrari and the whole FCA to the better. RIP.

A shocker.

Damn.

But he had a stressful job as well, being a CEO of Fiat, Ferrari, and all that.

What implications this has to the future of Ferrari, who knows.

last time a "big name" related to ferrari died, they won the next GP and dedicated it to said person. coincidentally it was before the hungarian gp as well, Bianchi in 2015.

rest in peace, Sergio. this happened out of the blue :(

Short statement by John Elkann:
http://www.repubblic...ionne-202614191

Translated in Financial Times:
"Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone. I believe that the best way to honour his memory is to build on the legacy he left us, continuing to develop the human values of responsibility and openness of which he was the most ardent champion. My family and I will be forever grateful for what he has done. Our thoughts are with Manuela, and his sons Alessio and Tyler. I would ask again everyone to respect the privacy of Sergio’s family."

What a great man. Really embodied the Ferrari culture and came across as a great leader for them in modern times when they really needed it during a dry spell of success for the racing team.

RIP Sergio.

A heartfelt tribute from Henry Foy of the FT:

Marchionne was hired to fix Fiat in 2004 when the Italian carmaker was worth $7.5bn. Today he died, with Fiat, Chrysler and Ferrari worth roughly 10 times that. He was the smartest man I ever interviewed, and the car industry will never replace him

The FT's obituary is below and worth the read:

https://www.ft.com/c...8f-a6a2f7bca546

The acquisition of Chrysler appealed to his appetite for complexity and high risk. In 2009, Mr Marchionne won the backing of US president Barack Obama who handed Fiat a 20 per cent stake in the ailing US carmaker rather than letting it go bust. Mr Marchionne achieved full control in 2014 in getting Chrysler to pay for its own €4.35bn acquisition via a special dividend. With typical aplomb, Marchionne won the hand, arguing that the value of Chrysler and Fiat depended on him leading them. It gave the carmakers the scale they needed to survive.

When the Financial Times suggested that he had gone on holiday after closing the deal at Veno Beach in Florida, he sent back a message: “I am never on holiday”.

What were the complications?

I've seen it speculated earlier that it was a lung cancer surgery, not a shoulder surgery (or maybe lung cancer was discovered during the shoulder surgery).  Marchionne was a heavy smoker until recently.

What were the complications?

If true as reported by Saward during surgery to remove a malignant tumour in his shoulder, he suffered irreversible damage to his brain as a result of an embolism and went into a deep coma.

Turrini's Obituary text. He tells Marchionne was planning to resign from FCA and solely work for Ferrari 2019 onwards.

""And I owe him a confidence that he wanted to give me on the occasion of last Christmas. On the sidelines of the traditional meeting with journalists, he took myself aside.

"Do you know that I can not wait to leave FCA in 2019 to dedicate myself exclusively to Ferrari? I love these lands, I finally found a place to take root, I also want to buy a house here in Maranello ... "
It will not happen, dear Sergio. Destiny has decided otherwise. And you do not know how sorry I am."

What an phenomenal businessman, the turnaround he oversaw at Fiat/Chrysler was amazing.

Pretty awful that shoulder surgery can result in death in this day and age...
