Anywho, it seems to me as if there are only 10 German F1 drivers. Everyone are naming the same drivers. But okay, here I go:

There have only ever been 52, of whom 34 never scored a World Championship point, and another three scored 9 points between them.

So there's not much room to manoeuvre.

But it is somewhat surprising that two of the F1 race winners are barely making anyone's lists.  Fair enough for Jochen Mass, given that he had a WC winning car and did eff all with it, but Karl Kling was a tenth behind Fangio on his debut aged 43...

I forgot about that. I'm not sure if this was the case but didn't he turn Renault down? I believe the uncertainty regarding Renault being taken over put him off, particularly after the Toyota withdrawal. A shame as he could have had some pretty decent cars assuming he was retained until at least 2012.

I think you're right, it sounds crazy looking back, but he turned Renault down for Manor as far as I can remember.

Christian Danner??

Bellof definitely belongs on this list, and I'll put Jochen Mass on 100 lists before I put Danner on any.  Not to mention Kling, Lang, Herrmann, Rosemeyer and Caracciola.

Technically Jochen Rindt was also a German, but we Austrians like to gloss over that little detail.   ;)

If one were to accept Rindt's German citizenship as a qualifier where would one place him on this list? Second?

I would have loved to see Heidfeld win at least a handful of races.

I think he was certainly good enough to.

His junior career was amazing, he won every category he competed in.

Thanks for voting, everybody. Here are the final results. It's a clear top 3, with a tight battle for places after that:

1. Michael Schumacher      90

2. Sebastien Vettel             81

3. Nico Rosberg                 71

4. Wolfgang von Trips        54

5. Heinz-Harald Frentzen   51

6. Ralf Schumacher           44

7. Nick Heidfeld                  30

8. Stefan Bellof                  28

9. Nico Hulkenberg            14

10. Hans-Joachim Stuck    12

For me, the shock result is Stefan Bellof in 8th given how high he often places on top 100 lists. I was expecting him to be best of the rest after the world champions.

Look out for another top 10 coming shortly. The next nation has more F1 drivers than the Germans, but less world champions.

I think I would put Bellof into the group of HHF, Ralf, Nick and Nico H. as well, based on what he showed. You could argue he had most potential of all outside top 3, which would be fair enough, but I think I'd rank drivers based on what was actually shown rather than theoretical potential. His 1984 Monaco GP was great, but you can also say it's a bit like 2012 Hulkenberg in Brazil (minus the mistake) to bring a modern comparison.

Tricky one is von Trips as he comes from a totally different era. I think he would fit into that group as well. Good solid driver, but not really among the benchmarks of his era.

Top 3 at least post-1950 F1 seems quite obvious yeah. Pre-war is a totally different ballgame. Germans in 1930's were a bit like Brits in the 1960's.

I hope that in a decade's time, the name M Schumacher fills positions 1 & 2.
