From bare carbon to finished product, a single colour can be applied in three days. And once it’s been raced, and blasted with debris and spattered with gravel on the racetrack, each chassis returns to the paint shop to be sanded down and repainted. During the season, this is a somewhat easier task, as all the components have already been filled, so a full car can be repainted in around three to four days.

“We repaint the tubs every three races, depending on where we are in the world,” explains Washington. “We take three tubs to each grand prix, and just take one out of the pool and put another one in. It’s a case of juggling them around, with the team manager working out which chassis gets painted and when...

Perhaps a silly question.... but anyway;

See the livery like the Alfa one used today? As it’s a one-off, how exactly do they go about removing it and repainting? It’s awfully intricate to run for a couple hours... seems a bit of a waste doesn’t it. But how do they get it all back off and repaint? I assume they paint all the bits individually so do they have to strip the entire car down to remove it and put the proper colours back on?

 

I'm almost certain the livery we saw from Alfa Romeo was simply a wrap, so applying and removing it is quite a quick job.

It's a wrap. You can see the relief from the original decal/stickers of the Alfa Romeo logo at the airbox under the wrap on this image:

Sorry, you are saying they put the Valentines wrap OVER the to-be-launched visual identity of the car complete with all its stickers on it already? I really think not! That would be daft. I think what you can see there are surface impressions, F1 liveries are barely dimensional.

Judging by the great liveries that pop up around the internet and the uninspired designs of most teams, I don't get why they don't try some kind of crowdsourcing. Access to a lot of great ideas to a presumably low price.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing what a shitty job some of these teams do with their liveries, esp when you see what guys like Sean Bull, Tim Holmes, Antar and others are doing given the same colors, sponsors, and cars.

Look what Mark Antar did with the Racing Point livery. Couple simple tweaks. Eleventy bazillion times better than what they came up with.

I'm guessing that the final livery is the end result of a process whereby a designer has come up with something nice, then it has to go thru many layers of corporate eejits who will add their tuppance worth to its destruction, then finally once everyone is happy, the car gets painted.
When the ciggy firms were paying fortunes, the cars looked neat, coz they were just painted like a pack of ciggarettes and smaller sponsors just got to add their stickers. Much like Redbull does now, no?

The problem is that the sponsor buys the space on the car and dictates what goes there. When you have a few different sponsors with their own idea of what they want their identities to appear like, the teams will have to compromise.

Mark's designs are ok, the Ferrari one is especially good as well as the Racing Point.  I particallyi lke an old papaya and black render he did a while back.  That said, most are incredibly dark and gloomy... Did a good Alfa too I guess.

Agreed, completely fail to see the point of the launch livery. They always look awesome, then they immediately go back to old faithful.

The guy who now works for Renault's F1 marketing department. I'm sure he'd be the first to say that there's pressure coming in from all sides when designing a real livery, that a hobbyist with photoshop doesn't have to deal with.

Oh, no doubt ... yet some teams, Renault for example, manage to pull off nice liveries consistently. And Antar's version of the RP livery isn't radically different and retains the brand messaging everywhere, but looks so much better and actually attracts the eye rather than repelling it.

Mark's designs are ok, the Ferrari one is especially good.

 

His Ferrari features a white MW logo on a red background (similar to last years actual Ferrari.) I suspect that the real Ferrari's black MW is to move away from any resemblance with the red / white Marlboro chevron that could provide a legal challenge of advertising actual tobacco products. As a non-contracted hobby designer he doesn't have to incorporate those sort of issues and is free to simply do a cool looking livery.

It might look good in a 2D image like that, but on a real car that dark pink stripe down the side is going to look very odd and broken up from any other angle.

It’s pretty rare for us to see the cars from a side on view on TV or from the grandstands.

I disagree, but that's a minor bit of the overall scheme. Even if Antar were to stop the dark pink stripe a couple feet shorter at the T like RP did, his design still looks much better and appealing to the eye. His design flows with the car. RP's design, esp the bit on the engine cover, looks like it was designed on a piece of paper and then just plastered on with no regard at all for the shape of the car.

Curious that the new livery trend is following Williams lead from last year and having a black bottom layer on the car from nose to tail. McLaren and Alfa Romeo are doing it too.
