HSK  Special.

208-GMBflickrpic-Copy-a.jpg

This photo is from the 750MC Relay race in 1959 at Silverstone. Reg 208 GMB was issued in May 1959 in Chester as a HSK Special to Mr Bernard Cox.

The low build Rochdale Type-F bodyshell with flip front and rear suggests a low, race-oriented chassis. I would love to know who made the chassis?

If any one has information on this chassis or car or Bernard Cox please reply.

Regards,  Tony Stanton

It reminds me a bit of those Tornado Typhoon fibreglass bodies  that were fitted to Ford 10 chassis back in the fifties.

Edit: well maybe not - further investigation found this picture of one

A Bernard Cox raced a Lola Mark 1 in the late fifties?

B.A.R.C. member, Goodwood Tourist Trophy, 5 September 1959.

TYPICAL SCENE in the pits at the Six-Hour Relay

Race. Bernard Cox in his Ford Special HSK has just

brought in the sash and the team manager of the N.W.

Centre 1,172 team, R. Butterworth, has snatched it and

is running to the next car, whose driver has his hands

above his head ready to receive the sash.

Was it the same Bernard Cox that later built the Cox GTM's at his garage in Hazel Grove, Stockport?

Well it looks like TNF succeeds again.

Hi Simon,

Thank you this looks like a very good lead. I have read about Bernard Cox on the Cox GTM website and its the right time, the right area and he raced in the 1950s.

Do you please have any contact details for your Bernard Cox? if so please PM me.

Also thank you Rupert for your leads. Nice photo as well. MotorSport misprint? on the name R Butterworth, it is Frank Butterworth one of the 2 Partners of Rochdale Motor Panels.

Is it possible it's using the original Ford 8/10 chassis?

The steering and road wheels look to be from the Ford as do the hubs.

Hi Peter,

I think the Steering wheel, the seat and the body are sitting to low for an original Ford chassis?

This is not to good a photo, but enlarge it 2nd car from the right see how low it is and how low the driver is.

As far as I know he is no longer with us, you might want to contact Howard Heerey as he raced a GTM for Cox and took over when Cox sold up in 68. His father owned a garage just down the road. Howard now lives in Oz but can be contacted via Facecrook.
Hope that helps.

Also, it is definitely a F type Rochdale body, as for the chassis, hard to say, lots of people used them and built their own chassis, including Elva.

I used to have MBU309 the Elva that was fitted with an F-type body!

Ended up making new moulds for it, which were also used to make a body for the Bristol Barb.
