The classic (and briefly homologated under the Appendix J that applied to the end of 65) Allardette used the 1340 Ford engine. Don Barrow's web site includes a good description of the earliest such cars as used by drivers Reg McBride etc. including gluing moulded 997 to 1340 blocks with the casting marks ground off.

McBride's winning  Allardette in the Manx results above is shown as 1498cc.  Sounds like the Allardette came with a variety of power units.

Autocar road tested a Shorrock-supercharged Ford Anglia, 3 February 1961, Page 192. It was yet acquire the Allardette name.

I think the 1340 was the homologated version. Don Barrow recounts how McBride and Simister had separately come up with the idea of using the 1340 marine engine in a 997 Anglia (before it appeared in the Classic). He also mentions that Simister (a Ford dealer) first used an early Cortina which folded above the rear arches, as many did before using the works strengthening mods developed on the "DOO" GTs and the "KPU" Lotuses. Hence a lot of "big" Anglias continuing at club level, some with the 1498 taken to 1650.

(Rod Cooper's Lotus Cortina that won The "non-homologated" event alongside the 68 RAC had a 1650 TC).

Was the Simister related to well known journalist and classic Riley buff John ?
