It's in Paris, Fri 06 Dec 2019 18.00-23.00

Apparently it will be glittering.

Looking at the names of the meeting rooms at FIA HQ they missed a trick by not including Bizet. Or maybe that's the room where they store the one true podium that they take cuttings from to build them at the track.

While I can understand it's not motivating to be the first or second loser at the Gala, I think the drivers usually have points bonuses in their salary. So from that perspective, Max reaching third is positive or vindicated in some way.

Anyone else hoping for another shock retirement announcement at the Gala? I don't think any of the current drivers would or should, but a little more driver market shake-up could be fun

it is a small joke. Traditionally, drivers have seemingly not exactly relished attending the FIA gala, glittering though it may be. As attendance is mandatory for the top three drivers, in past years drivers have seemingly texted each other teasing the third place driver about how they now have to go.
Other drivers, as noted, have found ways to make their own fun when pressed into this glittering service by their FIA overlords.

A 3rd for Max would give him a chance to see how the trophy is handed out and prepare himself for when he gets his. If it was Vettel & Leclerc attending they would crash into each other and demolish a champagne tower, so Max & Bottas are a much safer bet.

If itâs Ferrari they should do this! It would be like when Juergen Klinsmann did that salmon-like dive miles from anyone to mock his own rep for going down too easily for penalties. Everyone respected him not taking himself too seriously.

A Lewis, Bottas, Max gala will just mean no one talks to each other lol.

I like the idea that the podium comes from an endless prism of which each circuit gets a slice, like a slice of a big loaf of bread.

All the more painful afterwards, as we've seen

I assumed all the podiums (podia?) were salvaged from the set of a defunct daytime gameshow, possibly Going for Gold.

Bringing the action closer to the fans, a gala in Louvre...
I feel this comment shows you don't really understand the difference between the FIA and FOM (Formula One Management - who is owned by Liberty Media). Liberty want to bring the action closer to the fans yes, but this was the FIA's awards dinner for all those who have competed in and won this year in an FIA accredited series. Hence no Indycar or Nascar mention for example.
The FIA are not particularly interested in the fans. It is not their raison d'ĂȘtre.

Rookie of the year.
Lucky B of the year would be more fitting. Look at what Norris and Russell got to deal with... And both did well against established team mates.

Well, I could start off. It's a black tie dresscode none the less. But hey, I'm letting it go for now.

By the look of it, a trophy that someone had reversed a truck over.

Is it? Can you scan and post a copy of the invite where it says that? At least Lewis's clothes fit him, whereas Max Verstappen appears to be wearing a shirt that is six collar sizes too large for him. Maybe he borrowed it from his dad?
I am sure I remember James Hunt pitching up in T-shirt and jeans to get his WDC trophy. But he was a English gent so it was OK....

It's a prize-giving. They've got to hold it somewhere. What's wrong with an art gallery that's visited by ten million members of the public each year, and is round the corner from their offices?

Though this is probably the first time that Hamilton wears something I would wear so hey.

Maybe he confused "evening dress" with pyjamas.
