I rarely refer to F1, tending to just use WDC as that's usually what people mean. And although I am extremely pedantic about the F1 v WDC distinction, even I stop short of treating post-1980 champions as an entirely separate category! I'm only a 9 on the pedant scale.

The Ligier JS2-Maserati of the two Jean-Pierres, Beltoise and Jarier. On the left the Gulf-Mirage of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell is rolled passed to pole between the Ligier and the Art 3.0 CSL of which DeKnyff posted a picture earlier.

Where Ickx and Bell went on to their second and maiden win at Le Mans, it didn’t end too well for Beltoise and Jarier.

The Lang-Cooper King Cobra of Carrol Shelby, driven by Dave McDonald at laguna Seca in 1964.

The car was an autonomous Shelby project. Craig Lang (Olympia brewery) would finance the project. The car itself was a Cooper chassis, modified by Shelby and powered by a Ford 289 engine.

Below, the car on its trailer.

EDIT: the car on the trailer is the slightly revised MkII version, also made from a bare Cooper chassis.

A 1961 2500cc Lancia Flaminia Zagato at an historic meetimg in 1985 with Mario Vecchi driving.

These cars had several outings in the Targa Florio during the early 60's including an 8th place overall and 1st in class during the 1962 race.

The styling is in sharp contrast to the E Type that is tailgating here, both from the same era.

I think it was his wife who wanted them to carry on.  Dalla Lama crashing the other car in the last hour was pretty gutting.

Dan Gurney's Ferrari chases Carroll Shelby's Maserati at SCCA Riverside in 1957. Shelby won, but it was clear that newcomer young Gurney would be a hard rival in the future.

Drivers traded position several times along the race.

Shelby had driven the Maser at Riverside some weeks before, for the track's inaugural race. Not his finest day.

What, and make life easy for Ivanhoe, milestone 11, Amphicar, de Knyff, Superswede and all the others? Keep them on their toes, I say. I want to see Nardi number 103 that retired on the first lap of the Targa Florio.

Not something you'd expect to see. A B.R.M. P160 and Porsche 908 in the same race.

1979 Silverstone St John Horsfall meeting. The B.R.M. was driven by Bobby Bell (Bell & Colvill) and Siegfried Brunn drives the 908 both dicing for the lead. The B.R.M. won.

Keep on counting up

Three Shelby Ford GT40’s MkII after a weekend of hard racing at Daytona 1966, when Ford had it’s sweet revenge taking 1-2-3 and putting four cars in the top 5, after it’s disastrous previous season. The #98 driven by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby won the race, followed by #97 and the #95 Holman entry of which DeKnyff posted a picture earlier. #96 finished 5th.

A car which, despite its undisputed driving qualities, is not normally associated with motor racing: the Citröen CX of Christine Dacremont at the Monte Carlo rally of 1978.

Perfectly tying in to my comment in the other thread. I believe this was actually the same car Faulkner used in 1951 when he again broke the track record - so this car had probably the shortest and tallest Indy drivers in back to back years.

It was also, sadly a car once driven for the occasion by Bill Vukovich but the worst association with Vuky was that it contributed to his fatal accident.

Rodger Ward was driving the car in 1955 but his mishap started the chain reaction of events in which Vuky got involved with fatal consequences.....

I typically avoid Indy because I know very little about it. The web tells me that Lee Wallard won the Indy 500 with this car in 1951, a Kurtis Kraft Offy.

Yep, and in Tony Bettenhausen's hands it dominated the championship that year too. Tony should have been driving what turned out to be the winning car in both 1947 and 1951 iirc.

Wallard was badly burned just 4 days later, but ended his "WDC" career with a 50% win rate. Juan Manuel who?

Am I permitted to tell you a bit more on this car then?

Lee Wallard drove this car at Indy, in the rest of the year it was driven by Tony Bettenhausen. Tony won enough races with the car to become national champion that year.
At Indy however, Tony had a contract with Lou Moore, the builder/owner of the legendary Frontwheeldriven Blue Crown Specials that had scored doubel victories in '47 and '48 and won the race also in 1949. Tony became part of the team from 1950 on. But crucially, during 1950 there were a few developments within Indy cars that eliminated the advantages of the FWD Blue Crown cars and they were unable to match their opponents in that, loosing their edge and their chances to remain successful at Indy against them as had happened between '47-'49.
The painful truth for Bettenhausen is that had he remained with the car he would drive all year long except at Indy, he may have been in the shoes of Wallard, but of course that is far from certain. Tony Bettenhausen was very popular and well like but somehow he appeared to be jinxed at the Speedway, like the Andrettis. But he also lost his life at the speedway in '61.

About the car, It was the smallest and lightest car in the race and it also had the smallest engine! While according the rules a 4.5 liter engine was allowed, its 4-banger Offy had only 4 liters capacity. The chief mechanic hoped to restrict power loss with a shorter stroke and with higher revs making up for the capacity loss.
Wallard drove the race like a madman, and almost succeeded in destroying the car during the race. When it finished as a winner, some components in the suspension had gone and it was a sheer miracle that the car made it to the end.
His victory was also Wallard's last race at Indy, a few months later he was injured in a fiery accident that eventually caused his retirement.
As already told, the car went on to become the 1951 AAA champcar category champ. It was a Kurtis-Kraft chassis and of all the many KK-cars built and raced over the years in Champcars, this is supposedly the Kurtis with the most victories within Champcar racing. But most of them were of course on the dirttracks.

.....phew....

EDIT: was working on this and missed Collombin's post ....

Saw this at Brands, and was surprised Gordon Spice wasn't seasick, such were its undulations on the start straight. Pretty sure the tub from this car ended up hanging from the wall inside a railway arch near Stamford Brook station, at Hammersmith in West London, where several racing people plied their trade in the sixties and early seventies. Don't know what became of it.

Rookie of the year George Amick in the 1958 Demler Special Epperly-Offy in which he finished a close second. In 1959 Paul Goldsmith came in fifth in the same car and he was third in 1960.

n 1966 a General Electric gas turbine was fitted and the Epperly was driven by Al Miller and Bill Cheesboug. The car was very fast but was declared unsafe because of the lack of engine braking..
